Third crew: left to right, Sturm, Smith, Mazzanovitch, Ed- wards, Duane. It is always hard to forecast a season this early in the year, yet the tradition of Browne and Nichols' Crews has always been a proud one. Over the past few years the first Crews have done remarkably well. Two years ago, the first boat was defeated only once in the regular season, and placed second in the Worcester regatta. Again, the 1957 first boat was undefeated in all but one race in the regular season. It is not easy for a school of Browne and Nichols, size to carry this winning tradition into all three boats, yet last year is a fine example of what a little pride and determination can do. The second boat remained undefeated and placed second at Worcester, while the third boat won over half its regular races, and won third boat competition at VVorcester. In the regular season there were a total of 12 wins and 3 losses. This is certainly something to be proud of. We began informal machine rowing a week before opening the 1958 season. A number of new boys re- ported to learn the fundamentals. On March 10, the formal season on the river began. The first practices were light, but things have begun to settle, with the first sensations of a tippy shell over, and a few miles under our belts. The squad is green, but there is a great deal to look forward to. There are returning letter men to help the new boys and there is every reason to believe that this will be a good season. The outfield consisted of Cunningham, Pierson, and Schoepfer, with Slocum on the mound. This year's pitching duties are divided between Slocum. Cunningham and Tucker. With the nucleus of three lettermen plus the non- lettermen of last year, and a half-dozen new boys, the Browne and Nichols' baseball team should develop into a formidable team. Gosh it'.r small. 1 9 Olson, Iackson, and Coxswain Bazely. As for the second and third boats, it is hard to say what will happen. Sturm, Smith, Mazzanovich and Edwards, make up one boat, while Lombard, Butler, Blatchford and Captain Woodward make up another. Below the Varsity, two new rowing clubs have been formed. This year there are enough boys to make up two crews in each club. It is hoped, however, that eventually each club will have three racing crews. This means that with a race every Wednesday, be- tween the two clubs, everyone will have a chance to race and gain experience. The winning club first crew will race as the fourth boat and be presented with a cup at the season's end. The Middle School has two racing fours and two eights which represent two clubs. It is amazing to see eight coxswain size oarsmen propelling a shell, yet it is also comforting to realize that what will probably be future Varsity material is getting such a good start. There have been tremendous steps taken to improve crew at Browne and Nichols. A new shell this year means that we now have eight fours and two eights, all in good shape and something to be proud of. The present boat house is inadequate both in size and condition, but in a few years we hope to have a new one. Everything in the past should be looked on with pride, and one should realize that as the Browne and Nichols' Crew program continues to grow, a tradition is being built. P-u-u-1-I-I 1' Okay, gent:
