BALL Last year, the baseball team, led by Captain Iim Fitzgerald, compiled a record of seven wins and six losses. This was the third consecutive year that the Browne and Nichols baseball team had had a winning season. Last year's team consisted of Larry Norton, Steve Heineman, Burtt Ehrlich, and Dick Gibbs in the in- field. Kevin Barbera, Ted Freeman, and Whig Pier- son were in the outfield. Bill Snelling and Art Cunningham took over pitching duties, while Captain Fitzgerald lead the team in the catching position. This team managed to play pretty steady ball throughout the season, reaching its peak when it beat a very strong Middlesex team. Dick Gibbs led the team in hitting and Bill Snelling developed into a top-notch pitcher. This year's team can be described, in part, by the fact that there are only two seniors on the squad. There are only three returning lettermen who are Whig Pierson, Art Cunningham and Captain Steve Heineman. This means that the team is young and inexperienced, and will need time to develop into a good steady ball club. The team played its first game on April tenth, and, although it lost to Belmont Hill, the last half of the game proved that it could develop into a steady ball club. April sixteenth the team met with Noble and Green- ough. We played well defensively throughout the game, but because of a lack of hits, lost. We showed a definite improvement over the previous game. The starting lineup for this game consisted of Coon at third base, Heineman at shortstop, Kaplan at second

9 The year did have its bright side. We succeeded in getting good experience and in seeing the development of several very good wrestlers on our team, such as Steve Caplan and Mike Holden, who have been elected co-captains for next year. Steve had the best record of anyone on the team, losing only one match during the season hy a very close score. He also provided one of the most exciting matches of the year hy tying Belmont Hill's New England Champion, Watkins, two-to-two. Mike should do an excellent job next year, for his daily efforts in calesthentics should give the team fine preparation for matches. Art Schoepfer had the most surprising season of the year. Starting out with no varsity experience, he quickly developed a solid style of wrestling which exf asperated all of his opponents and defeated most. Am- hrose Spencer is another sophomore who has shown that in future years, he will he quite good. In one of the darkest moments of the season, in our match against Governor Dummer, he came up with a sur- prise pin which saved our score from being completely ignominous. lim Mazzanovitch, along with Willis Iohnson and Bill Collins, made a valiant effort to hold up the heavier weight classes. Arthur Shurcliffe also helped out during the year, and came up with a couple of pins. Ioe llutera and Charles Taylor, both from the Middle School, helped us out in doing well a very difhcult ioh. The outfield consisted of Cunningham, Pierson, and Schoepfer, with Slocum on the mound. This year's pitching duties are divided between Slocum. Cunningham and Tucker. With the nucleus of three lettermen plus the non- lettermen of last year, and a half-dozen new boys, the Browne and Nichols' baseball team should develop into a formidable team.
