Buckhannon-Upshur football team began their drill for the 1952 football geason tiiwio weeks before the opening of school to prepare for their new opponent rantsvi e. On Friday, Sept. 5, the team traveled to Grantsville only to lose a hard fought ball game to a tough Grantsville eleven by the sad score of 20-13. lake Davidson and Russell Crites tallied the B-U scores. The following Friday the Buccaneers then hopped into the winning column by showing superior power as they downed the Weston Minutemen 13-0, as David- son and Manley lugged the pigskin over in the -first and last quarters. The very thrilling game was played on the home field. The B-U team then made it two wins in a row by downing Elkins on a home game. The scoring trio of Manley, Davidson, and Crites couldn't be stopped. The team played as a top ball club as they finished with a score of 19-O. The next Friday, B-U went to Philippi only to lose a tight ball game 13-14. B-U's inability to tally the extra point proved fatal. Both of the B-U scores came in the first half while Philippi pushed over their scores in the second half. On Oct. 3, B-U again took to the road to tangle with Grafton. Although Grafton led at the half 14-0, the B-U team made a fighting effort, but extra points proved the deciding figures as the Buck-Ups came out on the short end of the score, 12-14. The next week the B-U team met the Indians of Brid eport on their own soil. The Indians took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and hell? it until I-linchman went over from the one after a long run by Manley. Center Gay then intercepted a pass and Manley again took the leather over. The extra point was good and the final score was 13-13. On Oct. 17, B-U played host to W-I. On the first play from scrimmage W-I ran 72 yards for a T.D. B-U outplayed by no one repeated the same thing but also scored the extra point. In the second period Hoover bucked over from the one. Both teams scored in the final quarter and the total score read 20-13 in B- U's favor. The next game was played at Richwood, another new opponent. B-U's scor- ing came in the first and last quarters as they made it their win. Behind the fine running of Manley, Davidson, and Crites, B-U 's well-oiled machine won 21-17. Hoover converted all extra points. The occasion was marred by jim Deane's brok- en arm in the second half. On the next Friday B-U then went to Clarksburg to tangle with the Victory Eagles. lt was a nip and tuck ball game all the way. The Buck-Ups scored in the closing seconds of the first half. In the last minute Victory tallied their only score of the game. The Eagles made their extra point and the final score was 7- 6 as B-U lost. On Nov. 7, B-U played their last game of the season with Shinnston, B-U scoring in every period except the third. Paul Gay waited until the last game of the season to score his first touchdown. The final score was 21-7. B-U had a season record of 5 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie.
