They are the only married couple that are' teaching together in this school. Mr. Martin first started teaching here in 1941 and taught one and a half years before leaving for the Army. He came back in 1945. Mrs. Martin started teaching at B-U in 1946. W Mrs. Martin is the girls' physical education and health teacher. Mr. Martin teaches chemistry, physics, and general math. Besides their duties as teachers, they are both very active in student organizations. Mrs. Martin is Pep Club sponsor, G. A.A. sponsor, and Yearbook advisor. Mr. Martin is advisor for the Yearbook and Projectionists. Much credit is due to these two teachers for their work with the students. And so with gratitude we dedicate this book to Helene and Carl Martin. YEARBOOK STAFF Co-Editors 2 .. ORGANIZATIONS THE COUNCIL MEETS STUDENT 'fins . f i , W' A, A' , .,,. If. - Q A ' - -nw N., f X I MW? Q X , s f 1 I . 8 X 'Nr a The preamble of the Student Council constitution states that: We the students of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, in order to establish justice, perform our duties as members of the school, form a more perfect student body for ourselves and our school. This year our council has undertaken several projects. One of the most important ones is financing the year- book. Other important projects: Magazine Driveg Athletic Banquet, school calendar, cheerleaders, Courtesy Week, all school dance, Student Government Day, bulletin board, scrapbook, Buccaneer of the Month, and we have made plans to adopt an Alma Mater which we consider a very important project, also a landscaping program to aid in beautifying our school tgrounds. One of the most important is the sending of delegates to the state and national conventions thereby pro iting from the contacts made with other student councils of the nation. Officers of our organization are: Ann Page, who is the first girl president 'the Buckhannon-Upshur High Scho- ol council has ever had. Vice President, Ric ard Pagnillop Secretary, Sally Priceg Treasurer, Steve Young: Advi sors, Mrs. Marcia Mae Glauner, Mr. Richard Norvell, and Mr. Harry Hymes. The purpose of the Student Council is to train people to govern themselves, carry out projects with their own ideas, learn parlimentary procedure, and above all, come closer to the heart of democracy, We, of Buckhannon Upshur High School believe that our Student Council is doing just that, and we are proud to have been a part of it r 'Z if ,1 1 gi 'Q r - , ., 5 .' Coach Frank Feola Buckhannon-Upshur football team began their drill for the 1952 football geason tiiwio weeks before the opening of school to prepare for their new opponent rantsvi e. On Friday, Sept. 5, the team traveled to Grantsville only to lose a hard fought ball game to a tough Grantsville eleven by the sad score of 20-13. lake Davidson and Russell Crites tallied the B-U scores. The following Friday the Buccaneers then hopped into the winning column by showing superior power as they downed the Weston Minutemen 13-0, as David- son and Manley lugged the pigskin over in the -first and last quarters. The very thrilling game was played on the home field. The B-U team then made it two wins in a row by downing Elkins on a home game. The scoring trio of Manley, Davidson, and Crites couldn't be stopped. The team played as a top ball club as they finished with a score of 19-O. The next Friday, B-U went to Philippi only to lose a tight ball game 13-14. B-U's inability to tally the extra point proved fatal. Both of the B-U scores came in the first half while Philippi pushed over their scores in the second half. On Oct. 3, B-U again took to the road to tangle with Grafton. Although Grafton led at the half 14-0, the B-U team made a fighting effort, but extra points proved the deciding figures as the Buck-Ups came out on the short end of the score, 12-14. The next week the B-U team met the Indians of Brid eport on their own soil. The Indians took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and hell? it until I-linchman went over from the one after a long run by Manley. Center Gay then intercepted a pass and Manley again took the leather over. The extra point was good and the final score was 13-13. On Oct. 17, B-U played host to W-I. On the first play from scrimmage W-I ran 72 yards for a T.D. B-U outplayed by no one repeated the same thing but also scored the extra point. In the second period Hoover bucked over from the one. Both teams scored in the final quarter and the total score read 20-13 in B- U's favor. The next game was played at Richwood, another new opponent. B-U's scor- ing came in the first and last quarters as they made it their win. Behind the fine running of Manley, Davidson, and Crites, B-U 's well-oiled machine won 21-17. Hoover converted all extra points. The occasion was marred by jim Deane's brok- en arm in the second half. On the next Friday B-U then went to Clarksburg to tangle with the Victory Eagles. lt was a nip and tuck ball game all the way. The Buck-Ups scored in the closing seconds of the first half. In the last minute Victory tallied their only score of the game. The Eagles made their extra point and the final score was 7- 6 as B-U lost. On Nov. 7, B-U played their last game of the season with Shinnston, B-U scoring in every period except the third. Paul Gay waited until the last game of the season to score his first touchdown. The final score was 21-7. The battle was close and B-U ffhally took the lead in the closing minutes. The score was 47-44. B-U again traveled away from home to meet Victory on Feb. 3. B-U lost by the sad L score 40-59. At home Feb. 6 B-U played hard but tall Elkins was too much as the final score was 51-59. For the first quarter B-U held Shinnston down on their own floor, but B-U couldn't keep pace. Maybe Friday the 13th was involved. The score was 30-53. On Feb 17 the Buck-ups visited Grafton High School. The Bearcats exploded a strong offense and won 39- 69. At hofne on Feb. 20, B-U came back from an 18-4 half-time score and took Victory 30-35 in a great de- fensive battle. Buckhannon visited R-W for their last game.
