Mother bought me a pretty new primer, with the picture of a boy and a dog on it. ' Vir- ginia, Kate, Bill, and I went down the street to school. The teacher gave me a seat on the front row. Then we read about Baby Ray. Guy Mick gllt a paddling because he spelled cow'l kow . THANKSGIVING, 1918 I am beginning to like school now. We drew pictures of pumpkins and pilgrims, and put them in the window. Clifford Baxa's pumpkin looked an awful lot like an ear of corn, but we lut it up anyway. The teacher told us a story about the -pilgrims. We get two holidays, thank goodnessl A CHRISTMAS, 1918 We had a Christmas program. I said Twas the Night Before Christmasf' Virginia McWhorter forgot the last Verse of her piece, so everybody laughed. Old Santa brought 1ne two dolls and a piano that you could really play. FEBRUARY 14, 1919 in We had a valentine box at school today. Bill Harper gave Margaret Dean avalentine that said, You're the apple of my eye. The valentine, I thought, was the pirettiest was the one Clyde gave me. I put it in my treasure chest. MAY 20, 1919 School is out. SEPTEMBER 2, 1919 Q Back again. I didn't realize how well I did like school. We have an arithmetic and a song book, beside our reader. Mildred Casto made an awful mistake when she said, Two plus two equal seven. HAI.LOWE'EN, 1919 - .5 We had a party at school today. I dressed like a ghost. We had gingerbread men to eat. We are going to parade tonight. LINCOLN s BIRTHDAY, 1919 We had a program about Lincoln. The teacher said he was the martyr of his country. lVIonk Tenney dressed like Lincoln and said th: Gettysburg address, You- should have seen how Orace Young drew the American flag. -' MAY 18, 1920 We went on a picnic today to celebrate the last day of school. Mathilde Leonard ate sixteen peanut butter sandwiches. My report card said that I was promoted to the third grade. - ' i SEPTEMBER 4, 1920 We felt important coming to school with the first grade this morning. We have a writing-pad new. We have lessons about two pages long. Robert Reger has begun to for- get to study. OCTOBER 12, 1920 This afternoon we had a Columbus Day Program. Carl Lamb sang Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean. It brought everyone to tears. I talked about the Indians while Ray Moore illustrated my talk. Page twenty-:ec an ,. I have a blue hat and coat that I wore Friday afterncon, so that everyone would be sure to see them. Mary Katherine Barnes has :t red hat with a pigeon on it. Everyone envies it. SEPTEMBER 1, 1921 I-have never heard of su many books-history, 'rithmetic, spelling, and reading. Daddy said if this kept up he would have to take the bankruptcy law. THANKSGIVING, 1921 We had a play this afternoon. Willard Baxa was john Alden, and Virginia Wise Farnsworth was Priscilla. I couldn't study fcr thinking about the turkey we're going to have. NEW YEARS, 192 2 Clyde Ervin and Mildred Casto gave a watch party. They said everything just looked the same to them, so they didn't believe a New Year ever came. f FEBRUARY, 1922 'We had a 'Washington program this afternoon. joe Dillinger took the pledge that he would always be as truthful as Washington. He broke a window about five minutes later and said Victor Thacker did it. . MAY, 1922 There weren't enough little girls for the May day, so twenty girls from our class acted as butterflies. ' SEPTEMBER, 1923 We have begun to take exams. I don't like them at all. I made 60 on History and Bo on'Geography. Everyone is wondering whether he will pass. I MAY, 1923 School is out. SEPTEMBER, 1923 For the last year we have assembled in our grade class rooms. Mathilde Leonard cried because she was afraid that she wouldn't be promoted. OCTOBER, 1923 We went on a hike today. junior Hartman fell in the creek, but Estie Young helped him the best she could by wiping the mud off with her handkerchief. MAY, 1924 We left the grades today. We will now be members of junior high school-and, what an honor! - SEPTEMBER, 1924 We are now under the supervision of Miss Kelly. In changing classes we wandered to the wrong room and were usually tardy before finding the right room. CHRISTMAS, 1924 We had a Christmas tree today. Wretha Peterson got a pink baby rattler from Eddie Frounfelter. I got a little doll with long, black curls. SEPTEMBER, 1925 We are now members of the eighth grade. This time we elected Bill Haper, presi- dent, Clyde Ervin, vice president. During the year we entertained with a chapel program. Page twenty-aight .. , ,- . , '- 1 ' .' ' I-. ' - 1 . :'. fs X P Q. SEPTEMBER, 1926 School once more. This is our last year in junior high. Again we elected Bill Harper, president, and Frank Everhart, vice president. We entertained junior high school with another chapel program. MAY, 1927 We had a party. I heard that Coley Hawkins took Milly Reppert, much to Monk Tenneyls disgust. At last the eventful night arrived. We were given our diplomas and were then the sophomores of Buckhannon High School. SEPTEMBER, 1927 We had a lot of trouble in getting our schedule fixed, but at last we started. Miss Wolverton, Mrs. Thornhill, and Miss Morton were our sponsors. Bill Harper was elected president, Frank Everhart, vice president, Maurice Tenney, Secretary, and Clyde Ervin, treasurer. . ' JANUARY, 1928 We had a chapel program. For once, Virginia Whiteis tongue ran away with her. She had Billy Bump down the hill before he spilled the water. Frank Everhalrt made a lasting impression as an orator when he told how Armour's Packing House rendered its lard. SEPTEMBER, 1928 Juniors at lastl We elected Willard Baxa, president, William Harper, vice president, Wretha Peterson, secretary, and Marian Deeds, treasurer. Miss Zickefoose, Miss Stockert, and Mr. and Mrs. Kraus were appointed as our sponsors. DECEMBER, 1928 The Junior English 2:15 class presented Overtones in assembly. We had a Christ- mas tree in class meeting. A thoughtful Junior presented Mr. Kraus with a rolling pin. MAY, 1929 The banquet was the biggest social event of the season. lt was a bountiful meal for the Seniors, for the Senior president said, Fm full of',, five times. SEPTEMBER, 1929 It is the beginning of our last year. Everyone shudders at the name of Senior English. Miss Boylen and Miss Snodgrass are cur sponsors. This time We elected Clyde Ervin, president, William Harper, vice president, Wretha Peterson, secretary, and Virginia McWhorter, treasurer. OCTOBER, IQZQ We gave a Columbus Day program. The living pictures would have been perfect, but Eddie Frounfelteris robe kept slipping inch by inch. DECEMBER, 1929 , We had a Christmas dinner. There we met Mr. Farnsworth, our class patron, for the first time. Miss Boylen's oration was the main feature of the program. FEBRUARY 18, 1930 William Harper made his formal announcement that boys are superior to girls. Page twenty-nine ,sa .fs .fu t. 1. FQ ' are . .QQ ra ,M . 3: 2 'S' L1 ' 51 'fi if in ,fa -L2-'E -vt! This quartet has given excellent advise throughout the year and has made friends with every student, both within and without the classrooms. f VVe have made a reputation this vear which excels that of former years, and vve feel that this success is partly due to the splendid advice and co-operation of this committee of teachers. Elizabeth Flanagan and Carl Lamb lead the procession As largest, they're taking up the athletic profession. Little Doc White and Ruth Hamrick, on the end, are hard to be seen. As they're not so big, and there are seventy-eight between. We've a stop at nineteen hundred and thirty to wait, And now to find out whom we appreciate. Our president, Robert Foster, has something to sell. The School Life's out, whispers Mildred Bell. What's it all about--the fuss? ln everything Lola Baxa made an A-plusl Paul Brooks holds her tight in ther ace. Who's going to come next? cries Edna Grace. Canfield, Stanley, White and Young, Basket after basket have they slung. At times they've made teams feel as small As Celia Ward would beside Helen Hall. Besides the above, we have football then, Miller, Waugh, Bailey. Bryant and Coyner-all letter men. Jack Wilbur knows how to make our opponents frown, All he has to do, is start for a touchdown. Our cheer leader, Helen McWhorter, quite famous, Says if we wonlt yell she won't claim us. When-down from the bleechers cries Sherman West, Aw now, Helen, 1,11 do my best! Our student manager is a Junior, too. Hc's ever faithful, iust and true, As he held his position from last year, So for David Latham we give a cheer! Eugene Stewart, Howard Gochenour and Charles Green Are all players on an independent team. Of course theylre not entitled to a letter, But here are other things they can do better. Page thirty-nina v iva : A ,196 gn- '--fi, W 2 gif. 9+ fi FIM , The Rhododendron til- ' x.. A, -QS -..Z - Q. Harry Funk and James Deans seldom start a riot. We appreciate them although theylre very quiet. And two girls who make a very good pair Are the two sisters, Cozbi and Mabel Sayre. Tho' our class is not known to all the nation, We have a junior broadcasting station. Our broadcaster-who is Stuart Felts-- Has a voice thatls distinct, and never melts. When it comes to posing, she's ideal, And yet we know she's Hazel Reel. Two Glee Clubers are Martha Cartright and Helc The latter a violinist- She's not so awful. Another girl called Beulah Ritter- Has she a fellow or did he quit 'erf And Olive Reppert who's quite romantic, Says, The bays simply drive me frantic. Nothing much worries Elaine Sexton, If- she loses him she tries the next one. Probably more than one point has been lost, Because of late hours spent with Nell jane Moss. Rosemary Harne can sing and play, While Carolyn Priester 'rouses our hip hoorayl Mary Elizabeth Kelly is the girls' gang chauffer, While she's doing that one can't call her a loafer. Now Vera Lowe is very tall. That is, she isn't very small. Yet Doreen Shockey, who is bigger, Along with Vera seems very eager. just to rest you from the above tongue twister, You must know Mavton isnlt Dorsey's sister. Although Zickefoose is their last name, Relationship, however, they refuse to claim. If in Library, there's something you canlt find-don't look Ask Frank Karickhoff. He's the best kind of reference book We've another boy of whom we are proud. It's Detective I-Iiner, sh-not so loud! Glenn Hartman and Tharp are professional at teasing But the ways of these two are somewhat pleasing. But Thomas Stockert's car rides well we suppose, But Willard Phillips is the only one who knows. 7 -r r Q ,V , . sxx 'ff -. ,, The Rhododendron' A 1 g 4 74 1 I gl L Film ' . Elsie Simpson, known as Dollie - Always find her kind and jolly. Marguerite MacDonald and Frances Trussler both are dark, The latter, Frances, can sing like a lark. U Mildred Suesli and Lillian Fogel are envied without doubt, Because they've mastered letting their hair grow out. We're sure Toots', Berry would like to make it stop. 'Cause it sure is tough on her Dad's barber shop. Jennings, Ruth and Hazel Andrews Are members we'd hate to lose. Hazel so pretty, and Ruth so bright And Jennings a good electrician all right. Pauline Lloyd with her pleasing ways, Sets most everyone in a daze. But should Joe Oldaker chance to frown, All the inhabitants would leave town. At most any girl's orders heis quick to obey, Who is it? Why it's John Paul Murray. Quite different are Holt Varner and Albert Crane Who say girls drive them just insane. . Mabel Linton's initials stand for Many Lovers, But she can't have them all as there are others. Evelyn Ward is so charming, cute and small, For her, 'tis not alarming why one would fall.' Virginia Wolfe, Hilton Westfall and Marguerite Simons--three, The future of these one can easily see. For listenl What occupation will they carry Why none at all, they're going to marry. Leona Ballah, Mabel Hoffman, Phyllis Haskins and Hazel Lamb Now there's no reason why we should slam, But we've about run out of good things to say, Except they're finewluniors- in a friendly sort o' way. . Lastly among the ones at Station 1930, who wait, Are Mary Ellen Young, who always is late, A - n Anne Wilson, Peg Watson, Sue Mayo make the four, . Who, speaking of friendship say, There's always room for more. Now we have a debt to our advisors, kind and true, Who during the years kindly helped us through. And if we continue our work, as we always have with care, At the end of the road, without a doubt, we'll surely find them there. . . --M. E. Y. ' Page forty-one v ..- L :4iA:.:iQwtZtlu?4., . ACTIVITIFS AND PROGRAM MATERIAL A Nature hikes were made to hills where formations, erosion, weathering, color, skyline, and types of rocks were observed. Birds of the snow, feathered pioneers, spring song- ssers, and the h'h tide of bird life were each noticed on nature's calendar by observation and exhibition pictures. Life history of butterflies and moths were studied by actual development of each stage in school. Insect collections were made and preservedg insects as actors were demonstrated by live specimens performing special feats at club meeting. Wonders of the microscope discovered through the use of bacteria slides, protozoa, molds, leaf tissues, feathers, insect wings and feet. Biological words acted as charadesg one act nature plays producedg assembly program given. Comparative anatomy of frogs, starfish, dog fish, perch, and reptiles demonstrated by examination and dissection of preserved specimens. Identification of trees and wild flowers studied. Personal experiences with wild animals and their habits related. On nature hikes material was collected and preserved for permanent 'exhibition purposes. , OFFICERS HIcI.I-:N MCWIICJR'I'I'IR .... ..,...... ......... The purpose is to promote science, to bring those interested in its pursuit into a closer and better contact with each other, and to aid its members to make a more detailed study of science than could be made in the class room. The club was sponsored by Mr. Moats. The charter members were: james Brewer, Wentz Fordyce, Laurence Post, Zaner Post, Charles Pugh, Dennis Ward, Francis Lewis, Victor Gillespie, Charles Ward, Dorsey Zizkefoose, Mary Morgan Herndon, Mary Louise Read, Edith Radabaugh, Russel Nesbitt, Bryant Moore, junior Hartman, Edgar Mundy, James Young, Edward Coyner, Burl Mick, Yale Canfield, Frank Lamb, Carl Lamb, Harry Fallen and George Clark. The following officers were elected: President, james Brewer, Vice President, Wentz Fordyce, Secretary and Treasurer, Laurence Post. Although there was not sufficient time to prove the strength of the club, a chemical vaudeville which was presented in assembly marked the talent of the members. The graduation of the Class of 729 left but a few members. However, the incoming classes filled the club to the appointed membership. The new members were: Jennings Andrews, Bernard Bailey, Paul Brooks, ,Howard Bryant, Eloise Canfield, Robert Foster, Frank Fultineer, Howard Gochenour, Charles Green, Mark Haymond, Hazel Lamb, David Latham, Ray Moore, Sheridan Richards, Glenn Tharp, Holt Varner, john Waugh, Charles White, Orace Young, Patton Young and Bernice Cline. ' We began the year 1930 by adding social affairs to our club routine. Hallowe'en initiation party featured our second meeting. There we elected our new officers. Frank Fultineer was elected president, Bryant Moore, vice president, and Mary Louise Read, secretary and treasurer. Again, we presented an assembly program in which two original plays were given. The club has discussed plans for excursions to nearby towns for the purpose of studying science in industry. The club stands for school spirit, true service, and a better knowledge of the purpose of science. , Page rixty-one 107 ' J if , + 'ff-' ,, V ' I he Rhododendrmz X- 4 W W K NOW-YOU R-STATIC CLU B IIJAQI' .xixfx I U 4 -f i 'Y X ., . xx PQ V. xx,.R . J CAP'l'AlN Rom-:RT Rhona BRYANT MO0Rl-I 19- .sF ootball--s2o CQBQA No, in games lost and won, the season Was not 11 success. That is apparent, out there is a reason. When Coach C. C. Kraus gave the call for football practice in the fall there were but three letter men from last year's squad left. The other fifteen had gone out via graduation. This was a staggering loss. About fifty boys in all answered the practice call, but this number rapidly narrowed down to thirty when the rough stuffw began. ln this grcup there Was not a single back- field man of experience, and only six linemen who had ever been in a game. So it is not surprising that the season stood--seven lost and one won. But the season was a true school of football for the boys. With thirteen lettermen around which to forge a team next year the outlook is not so hard. This year's team lacked in both experience and Weight. Next year's team will have gained in experience, and it is to be hoped in weight also. At the opening of the season the starting line-up starcely weighed 136 pounds. Nineteen players and the student manager earned letters this year. Of these, six will be lost by graduation, ten are juniors and three sophomores. Of the thirteen re- maining, six are linemen and seven are backs. He always played a consistent game and had the distinction of being in every minute of play throughout the season. No matter how the battle was going, Captain Reger was always at his post with words of encouragement and material assistance for his team mates. CORWIN RICFD Corwin, another of the lettermen from last year's outfit, was shifted from guard to tackle. lf Buekhannon had any big men on the team this year, Corwin was the one, but he averaged less than 165 for the season. His loss to next year's team by graduation will be keenly felt. BRYANT MOORE Red was the other one of the three lettermen from last year's squa!d. He started the season at end, but due to his ability in handling the ball and hard running, was often shifted to the baekfield when the need was urgent. He, too, is a senior and the team will sustain a real loss with his graduation. With practically no experience Red started the season on the bench, but before long he was getting regular calls to the guardposition. With his graduation goes another potential football star from active service to Buck- hannon High. CLIFFORD BAXA Clif was one of the five guards to earn his letter this year. He was handicapped by his lack of experience and weight, but was a scrappy individual. He was a willing worker and gave his best at all times. Like Ressegger, his senior year was his first year at football. DURWOOD MILLER A Dur',, another inexperienced senior, started the season as regular guard, but due to a severe ankle injury was kept out of much of the play during the last half of the season. His prospects were very good up until the time of his injury. ' YALE CANFIELD Punk started the season as a prospective center, but due to his rangy make-up and adeptness as spearing passes, he was shifted to end where he played regularly throughout the remainder of the season. He is a junior and should make a mighty good end for next year. ' BROOKS MICK Brooks had some experience from last year and had no trouble in holding down one of the tackle positions. He was an even tempered player, seldom rising much above or slumping below his average. It is to be regretted that he has gone to another school and will be lost to the Buckhannon squad for his senior year. ' JOHN WAUGH Icy played his first football this year and proved his metal. He was one of the five guards to earn their letters this year. His prospects at guard or tackle next year are good. ' BERNARD BAILEY Sheriff , although small and light, had plenty of fight and hit 'em hard . He played his first football this year and shows promise of being one of the good ends for next season. , ' HOWARD BRYANT Huck , another junior, was playing his first year of football. He took a try at most all line positions, but finally ended the season playing a good game at end. He is a hard worker and adjusts himself quickly to new positions and situations. ' Page :evenly-.tix xg . r , ex, -'H-so Ts ' ' ' rjifexf ii The Rhododendron - FE-T gf gi? , V 113 ELLIS CORLEY Ellis is a sophomore and one of the light weights of the team. But what he lacked in weight and experience, he made up in punch. He has the build for a good sized boy and looks good for two more years. PATTON YOUNG Rocky played his first year of football as one of the quarterbacks. This is a difficult position on any team, but for an inexperienced quarterback on an inexperienced team the road is just like Rocky's nickname. Nevertheless, he ran the team in good fashion, and was one of the best ground gainers when he toted the ball. He, too, is a junior. n JAMES BRYANT Tucky',, only a sophomore and small, alternated at quarterback with Young. He, ton, was in his first year at football but displayed much potential ability. If he only grows a little he would make a whiz for the next two years. KENNETH STANLEY Kenneth, another Junior, was one of the few on this year's squad who had any experience at all. Last year he subbed at guard and tackle, but this year was shifted to one of the half back positions. His strong point was in running interference. ROBERT COYNER Bob came out for his first football last fall, and made a regular out of himself. At the fullback position he was a consistent ground gainer either through the line or in broken field running. He was also good on the receiving end of a pass. He, too, has a-:other year. JACK WILBUR jack, another junior, was moved from end to the backfield. Last year he played in one or two games which was the extent of his experience. However, he proved to be the hardest running and hardest hitting back of the squad. His size, however, was against him, as he barely tipped the scales at 130. CHARLES WHITE Charley , last year's student manager, decided to try his hand at the game this year. He developed rapidly and by the close of the season was playing some gvod ball. Along with his experience he has gained some weight and looks good for the backfield next year. KEITH SHAW Keith, another sophomore, is one of the real small boys on the team. For this reason he did not see much service, but shows promise of being an expert runner and ball toter. With two more years before him he should develop into one good backfield man. Buckhannon opened the basketball season by defeating the strong alumni team 34-23. The first game away from home was with Roosevelt-Wilson, of Clarksburg, who defeated our team 17-12. The first visiting team to play Buckhannon High was East Fairmont. The Krausmen showed real strength by downing the Yellow jackets 44-20. The same week the blue and gray warriors journeyed to Phi'ippi and were defeated after a rough game, 13-19. The following week Buckhannon High played two strong - league opponents, winning the first game from Victory 25-19, but losing to the league winners of West Fairmont High 28-12. The Krausmen suffered another stinging defeat when the strong Elkins team defeated the locals, 27-16. The following week Buckhannon High showed real strength by win- ning over Victory High of Clarksburg by the score of 30-17. Elkins, later sectional champion, walloped Buckhannon at Elkins in the second game between the two schools by the lop-sided score of 36-23. After a week of rest Buckhannon High came back strong by defeating Grafton 38-16. The opening game of the three game series with Weston High provedlvery success- ful, with Buckhannon on the long end of the score of 25-ll. The following Tuesday Buckhannon bowed to the strong Washington Irving team after a hard fought battle, 32-25. The second of the three-game series with Weston proved to be a victory for Weston as shown by the score of 33-14. I After losing the first games to Philippi and Roosevelt-Wilson, the Blue and Gray team evened the count by defeating Philippi 27-24, and Roosevelt-Wilson 27-24, in the second game. In the sectional tournament, Buckhannon High defeated Sand Fork 34-6, Mill Creek 30-18, and Thomas 29-14, to reach the finals, where the strong Elkins team was again encountered. The Krausmen were overpowered and defeated by the Elkins Tigers in the finals by the count of 38-11. After the sectional tournament, Buckhannon High concluded its season of play by being defeated 49-17 by the victorious Washington Irving team of Clarksburg, later runners-up in the state tournament. The Malgie Servant vinzozoioioioif it 101011 it :I FICW HOMES here are without the ser- vices of the most modern servant, the silent slave that works for a few cents a day, bringing light and cheer into dwellings that once were drab and cheerless, and relieving thousands of back-breaking drudgery in many forms. This servant, summoned as rapidly as Aladdin called the Genii, performs almost any task, silently and efficient- ly, without questioning or instructions. Its task has been set and the work is accomplished with dispatch. This ser- vant is electricity, summoned by a click of the switch. ' I', though this servant is available at any minute, and cost is cheaper than the most menial of slaves, many have not availed themselves ofvthe oppor- tunity to use electricity for all house- hold tasks and drudgeries. This com- pany will be glad to show you the great service that can be obtained by using the Magic Servant, Efeffrifify, 11111111 for other purposes than light. v vaio Monongahela West Penn i Public Service Company 1 Your Patromzge' We Value Your Friemlrlzip Ar We D0 I e 1 QI..
