Without art, man would face a mental stagnation of overpowering proportions. So it was that the Dutch painters turned to the objects of the world around them. Portraits of individuals and of assembled guild mem- bers were very popular and Rembrandt became the great- est portrait artist of the Ba- roque North. His Rlces do not seem complacentg they are men troubled and saddened by ex- perience . . . so are the Rtces of our school board members today, for on their shoulders rest the heavy burden of the education of the young people ofthecommunity.
