K 5'm'uf1frd Buckeye Union High School 1966-67 as seen thru the eyes of the artists . . . Thru the ages man has constantly strived to express his thoughts and ima- ges in some form of art. Without art, man would face a mental stagnation of overpowering proportions. Today we are surrounded by art - it affects our buildings, our homes, our dress, our ev- eryday life . . . letis take a look as we view the 1966-67 school year thru the eyes of the artists . . . So it was that the Dutch painters turned to the objects of the world around them. Portraits of individuals and of assembled guild mem- bers were very popular and Rembrandt became the great- est portrait artist of the Ba- roque North. His Rlces do not seem complacentg they are men troubled and saddened by ex- perience . . . so are the Rtces of our school board members today, for on their shoulders rest the heavy burden of the education of the young people ofthecommunity. In 1515 Francis I came to the throne of unified France, Under him the fortified medieval castles were expanded into great chateaux, and new ones were built for the multiplying members of the court, Leo- nardo da Vinci worked for him. designing archi- tecture, fountains, costumes, and other objects, ln comparison, since Mr. McNabb came to the Buckeye Union High School District our school has also ex- panded. The school has been almost completely re- modeled. The C building, Snack liar, Hawks Haven, the Educational Materials Center have been built. y Also, land has been acquired for further expansion in order to provide a modern school for the community. New courses have been added, and like Francis l who was a cultivator of' the arts, has been tluite interested in the art program of our school. Sup rinfendmf 6715 fer D. Mc abil -si. Yr: 73- '-fc, me 4 V I if ,Mn Scferrfi Myers Princzpal Although we do not see the tizice ot' That Gentleman, the farce is :is surely felt as the leather of the shoes, the scaling paint of the chair, or the metallic gleam of the scissors. The rerility of the mootl takes precedent over the usual clominri- tion ofthe painting hy the portrziyzil ot' 11 fzice. XY!ith Mr. Myers we have seen the farce and perhaps in some czrses have felt the leather of the shoesf Seriously, we he- lieve that in the year Mr. Myers has heen here we have felt his LlIlLlCIASI1lIlllll1KQ per- sonality and his determination to let us know that the welt-are of the stuclents is his main objective. Andrew Wfyeth, the 2l1'flSfOl'HH'ldll11f Gentleman consirlers that comparisons and contrasts in textures give the illusion oflight while Mr, Myers believes that the light ot' eclucntion czin only be Acquired thru hrircl work and stu- clious effort. We see the issues of life quite simply, even though in themselves they are not simple. No doubt, at one time, the portrayal of Low life, such as this Murillo, gave pleasure to the nobility because it also gave a sense of superiority . . . a sense of the power of wealth. Mr. Glur and Mr. Smith appreci- ate this painting for they thru their experi- ence do not see life as simple. Illiteracy is a thing of the past and one of their objectives is to guide every student into the proper edu- cational program which in the end will give pleasure to the individual and to the world. E715 601114 elm' YOUNG BEGGAR by Murillo GLEN SMITH P ff f JOHN GLUR s abfx it MARY JANE HARDIESTY XWO YOUNG GIRLS by ligon Schiele These two children are among the c11lmerpresent1i- tions which Egon Schiele produced during his brief life. There is 11 sureness in the line although the two little girls sit nervously together . . . almost ns if' they were afraid the space outside were not made to move in. There is 21 need for distortion: it is ns if the distor- tion were arising from 11 wordless inner experience. Speaking ofexperience the two secretaries Mrs, Hurd- esty and Mrs. Turner are two busy people in the school. Everyday the office is running over with activ- ity and it is up to these two people to see that ull runs smooth. No wonder they sit nervously together! This fine basketball season was the 2nd best in the history of Buckeye Union High School Basketball. The Hawks lost only to Agua Fria in two close conference games and to Snowflake High School in the Inter-divisional play-offs. The failure to return to the State Tournament proved to be a big disappoint- ment to all students and fans who followed the Hawks throughout the season as well as to the players and coaching staff. Mark Kemp broke a 21 year old scoring record for varsity competition by scoring 1246 in his three years on the varsity. The Hawks loose 5 lettermen through graduation, Mark Kemp, jim Terrells, Bruce Bolen, Tarry Groves, and Robert Saide, however, with 5 lettermen returning and a fine group coming up from thejunior Varsity, who won 18 and lost 1, the Hawks could very well be a contender in the conference again next year. - Coach Bob Roberts 90 A TEAM FRESHMAN IJVUIII Rum' S. Not pictured: David Narramore Var ity and 41 If lgascball The 1967 edition of the Buckeye Baseball Team opened an ambitious twenty game schedule on March 14th with an away game against Bourgade High School of Phoenix. The score was 2-1 for Bourgade. The Hawks home opener was against defending conference champion Agua Fria on March 17. Fifteen varsity candidates were fighting for several positions left open from the 66 season which was predominantly a senior lineup. Bruce Bolen and Henry Federico were the only returning regulars. Bolen handled first base and Federico patroled cen- ter field. Ken Bulfer and Bob Cuevas were the only other returning lettermen. Both saw considerable action dur- ing the 66 season as starting pitchers and with the help ofCharles Masburn gave Buckeye a strong pitching staff. According to Coach Roger Tomlinson The Hawks are fairly young and inexperienced with only five seniors, but with the addition of several good prospects up from the junior varsity the team was in the thick of the con- ference race. The Hawks received a severe blow at the beginning of the season when Gordon Bulfer broke his right ankle in practice and was lost for the full year. The junior Varsity under Coach Glen Smith and the Freshmen under Coach jerry Conner also opened their schedule with games against Agua Fria. , we. 476 C Q rvxl E '97-Q J-4 LQ-an enedict. I would like to thank the wonderful pe op le who assisted in producing this year's annual. Many thanks go to my staff and our advisor, Mrs. Hoblitt, for cooperating and w orking so hard. You have done a wonderful job. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Manes for his help in getting the show on the road. A special thanks to James Hill for our photography job and to the Yuma Daily Sun for their assistance. Thanks again to our many sponsors for their patronage as the El Saguaro would be at a standstill without you. The cover this year was designed by Randy Spalding, a junior, who did a wonderful job.
