If They Mean to Have a War, Let It Begin Here.” Capt. John Parker 1 Capt. John Parker uttered those words as the colonial militia under his command prepared to meet the British troops at Lexington. Those works and the painting—Spirit of ’76—exemplify the dedication and determination of the American patriots in their fight for independence. The colonies had organized to express their grievances in an effort to resolve the differences within the framework of the Empire. Several of the colonial legislatures had instructed their delegates to the Con- tinental Congress in Philadelphia to oppose any move toward in- dependence. The movement for independence was gaining strength and following the publication of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, which argued for colonial sovereignty, a resolution was adopted and a committee of five appointed to draft a declaration of independence. 2 General Washington, who had been appointed commander-in-chief of American forces by the Second Continental Congress, was a brilliant military strategist. It was his decision to take his Continentals across the Delaware River on Christmas night which resulted in the first ma- jor colonial victory. That victory at Trenton over Hessian mercenaries gave the ragged army renewed vigor. Supported chiefly through the printing of Continental currency, the colonial army also went through the personal fortunes of many American patriots—among them Washington, Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee and John Adams. These fortunes were donated to the cause of liberty—a cause supported by about one-third of the American population which was near 2,000,000. Another one-third remained. loyal to the English crown and the remainder were apathetic. Despite many defeats, the colonies managed to keep an army in the field as a symbol of American resistance, to guarantee a negotiated rather than dictated peace. “.. Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” Patrick Henry 3 Following the victory at Yorktown, Washington refused the offer of his troops to become king and returned to Philadelphia to aid with the establishment of a permanent government for the new republic-—a loose alliance of sovereign states held together by the Articles of Confederation. An envoy composed of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay was sent to negotiate with the British. It was not until 1783 that the peace agreement, known as the Treaty of Paris, was signed, guaranteeing the sovereignty of the United States of America. The Articles of Confederation, despite many weaknesses, served to un- ify the states until 1787 when a special convention was held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia to revise them. The meeting was attended by fifty-five of the most-prominent men of the day. Twenty- nine of the delegates representing a majority of the states met on May 25 and decided to draft an entirely new constitution rather than am- mend the Articles of Confederation. The meeting then became known as the Constitutional Convention. 4 The men who assembled for the Constitutional Convention were an illustrious group with nearly every delegate a person of prominence in his home state. A large majority favored a strong central government. After four months of debate, on September 17, 1787, the new constitu- tion was completed. In a little more than four months, six states had ratified the new constitution. Despite the good beginning, the fight for ratification was bitter and it was not until September 13, 1788, that the necessary two-thirds majority of the states had approved the docu- ment and Congress could cail for states to choose their electors and congressmen. Several of the states had ratified the constitution with the provision that it would be amended. Thus, as one of its first official acts under the new constitution, the Congress added the first ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights. Washington was un- animously elected President and a new nation was launched on a course of democracy. ee i yh eet vay Tee ey Hey ces ie i‘ Nt Ak , P ne AS er y ehiatine. “ ; ; i : ee pt RAR CnC i RAS he Sa heA Pr , : (3 Py Na terE ates i 4 2 hd Ea Skaia pay ath at AU ars. wa iyatn Mischa } ; ven mag Aces OV ; sR Sikh a PUEBLA N MUSA MS MS TAI excitement of Christmas and Pa i, rea PES DM RE SAE SETI USCS SMA URE Ca et ) | | . ic tse etait a i i cae of school ¢ : | eget Hah ; ; ; ee iy oy le IG iiss A , SUR east nye ; ay ha ; fie , { Hoh are ; Vo gsconed es Shiai een SPOS ean OLED ANS ; See abt ‘ ee sce é yee vee st ay Gee en Fi f i t i vie 4 hb At % 2 y : i %. : ‘ i ips | : ; POS eh | SUMMER Thanks football players, ees ll oe a Cross country guys, band ee pes eae ; f Fall OES en members, and coaches for [isi ees $Underclassmen .... we coming out and practicing Pee eee Faculty........... — ) 32 during summer vacation. HHHHH Come on, let’s get it together. Jan and Jean talk over our Varsity game. Our Varsity Cheerleaders went to Denison University the last of June. There they learned such skills as gymnastics, stunts, and also a few pom pom routines. To earn money all the cheerleaders, varsity, J.V., and freshmen sold soap, pom poms, but- tons, and key chains. The above is Reverend Medley and Queen Bev. Her court and escorts were: Miss Denise Adams, Mr. Tom Hoff- master; Miss Heidi Parfitt, Mr. Jim Basile; Miss Becky Traffis, Mr. Cretis Jenkins; Miss Jean Griesheimer, Mr. Tim Haury; Miss Kim Stout, Mr. Mike Hawley; Miss Carolyn Woodhall, Mr. Rick Miller; and Queen Bev Medley, Mr. Ken Law. The night was a cold night, but the spirit of the Bucks was high. But it wasn’t high enough as the Bucks fell to L. West. After the game there was the grand march where the 1974 Queen Melanie Miller gave up her crown to Bev Medley. Here is the ’75 Fall Golf team: J. Asad, M. Atkins, M. Campanalie, K. Cullin, D. November 16, 1975 IN MEMORIAM I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last. Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! But Jesus’ love illumined Every dark and fearful glade. And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus’ arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth’s shadows, Pray to trust our Father’s Will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth- You shall rest in Jesus’ land: When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! 81 It’s always exciting and sometimes scary to be a little freshman. This years baseball team got off on a bad foot as they dropped the first game to Northwestern by a score of 4-1. Fielding a team which sported only two seniors as could be expected the first three weeks were a learning ex- perience for the team. Helping to put this aside were vic- tories over Lorain Senior, Norwayne, Northwestern in a return game and an exciting 3-2 win over an outstanding Wadsworth team. The Bucks then started the Conference schedule with a 5-0 shutout of Avon. Conference foes con- tinued to fall as the Bucks rolled to a 6-0 league mark. Highlighting this string of victories was a no-hitter by Jim Walter in a 2-0 white wash of South Amherst. In a showdown with Co-leader Highland the Bucks fell by a 7-1 score at home. The week later the Bucks traveled to Highland. Sparked by an outstanding game by Jim Walter the Bucks came away with a share of the Inland Conference title. Seniors on the team were Scott Miller (top left) and Jim Walter (bottom left). Jim was named Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player honoring his .517 bat- ting average. In four seasons at Buckeye he compiled a 35-8 won loss pitching record. Scott provided leadership from his position at short stop. These two provided senior leadership that enabled the Bucks to finish with an 18-10 record with a Conference Championship. 177 BUCKS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE Best defensive players, Terry Powers pitching and Tim Tighe behind in center- field. They know, even if they don’t want to admit it, that the bus drivers have many responsibilities in driving their routes. They have to get up earlier than any of us on dark and cold wintry mornings and get the bus warm so you won’t complain of a cold bus, even though you do it anyway. Good luck bus drivers on the next year’s bus routes. Don’t get too many headaches. And aw gee, golly gosh, THANKS! Memory Long ago is not so far away... It’s close as thought And near as memory Jogged by a souvenir, Stirred by a keepsake From days that used to be. Long ago is not so far away...
