THE 1973 REFLECTOR BUCKEYE HIGH SCHOOL Medina, Ohio Editor Linda Sheffield Bus. Mgr. Janet Barth A Time To Every Purpose To everything there is a season, and a time to every pur- pose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; at time to embrace, and a time to refrain from em- bracing; A time to get. and a time to lose; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war. and a time of peace. What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? I have seen the ravail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to re- joice. and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. I know that, whatsoever God doeth. it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it. nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it. that men should fear before him. The Buckeye Student Council undertook a full schedule of programs in the 1972-73 term. Along with the bicycle racks produced for our ambitious cyclists, a project in conjunc- tion with the Peace Corps was set up. Six seniors and sixteen juniors were tapped in the traditional ceremony held in March, and sur- prise and happiness proved to be prime fac- tors of the day. Kim Mohler lent his vocal talents to the theme song, “Lean On Me, with Joyce Butcher ac- companying him on the piano. Parents, teachers, and par- ticipants gathered for refreshments there- after. The N.H.S. members closed the year by conducting the annual awards assembly. 19 Manual And Mental Dexterity Abound Supporting the school by building the supports for the activity sign was a project of the 1972-73 Industrial Arts Club. The sign had been purchased the previous school year and after the club obliged by constructing the frame, the sign is now gracing the schoolyard and informing of school events. The club took second place in the door decoration contest held at Christmas time with their assemblage in the medium of wood. The goals of the Library Club this year were numerous, but all had a common pur- pose—to better our library. The purchasing of a microfilm reader, movie projector, and the listening station combined to make this a successful year for Buckeye's bookworms. Along with the multitude of projects undertaken to stock the library with new equipment, a book fair was held. Students have the opportunity to buy pop- ular paperbacks in the comfort of their English classes during the fair. Buckeye High School Row one: J. Feocking, E. Hinman, D. Whitmyer, M. Sayre, D. Under the guidance of Mr. Robert Leget, chemistry and earth science instructor, many activities were accomplished. Lending themselves to a year of service and discovery, the school benefitted from their diligence. The laboratory assistants are basically classroom aides. Chores such as grading various papers and assisting students during classroom lab sessions in the sciences are routine tasks to the ever-helpful individuals. An equally hard-working squad is that of the darkroom assistants. The care and operation of camera and flash, different photographic techniques, and various means of photograph and negative developing are a mere sampling of the infinite number of projects these students effected in the year’s duration. Darkroom Assistants: T. Wolff. J. Petrisin, J. Houston, J. Wolff, D. Hoert. Laboratory Assistants: Bob Ferry. Chemistry; K. Wolff, Earth Science; Mike Huttinger, Earth Science; P. Schaefer, Earth Science. % F.F.A. And Agri-business Progress F.F.A.'ers were busy again as they worked successfully for a full and productive year. Enter- ing varied judgings and speech contests kept the Buckeye chapter buzzing with activity and anticipation of reward for work well-accomplished. The club also sponsored a citrus fruit sale and profited favorably from it. Recipients and buyers of the palatable delights en- joyed the fruit tremendously. Apple cider was jugged and sold to anyone who fell for the sales pitch. The club chose its queen and her court and was crowned at the annual gala F.F.A. banquet. Agri-business, a work program for agriculturally oriented students, combined work with education. A sense of money control and the farm market was realized. All workers profited not only in capital, but also gained valuable ex- perience for the future. Mr. Koppes served as overseer for the ambitious bunch. Row One: M. Ulmer. F. Echle. Mr. Koppes. S. Scholarship And Service The Academic Challenge Team made its debut on television on February 17, 1973, against teams from Archbishop Hoban and Chardon High School. The team, under the excellent guidance of Mrs. Campbell, was comprised of Captain Delbert Chapman, Bill Kerr, Tim Hayden, and Alternate Dan Bargar. After the grab bag round of the quiz show, the Buckeye master- minds had accumulated enough points to receive second place. Archbishop Hoban barely beat out the Buck men and Chardon High School gained a third place berth. Y-Teens this year meant a group of very enthusiastic, fun-loving, hard-working girls. Under the supervision of county advisor, Marion Bolton, the Y-Teens participated in many activities. The highlight of the Y-Teen year for Buckeye was the county-wide World Fellowship Banquet at which time Sue Foote was crowned the Medina County Y-Teen Queen. Other club events include a picnic at Whippes Ledges with other county clubs, the Hanging of the Greens, an overnight splash par- ty at the YWCA with other county Y-Teens, and Inter Club Council meetings where the activities of the clubs were reported and ideas exchanged. The perfume sold at one dollar a bottle with thirteen of Paris’ favorite fragrances offered to the purchaser. Another money- making project was the annual Talent Show with students of Buckeye projecting their voices and themselves onto the captivated audience. The reason for these Projects was to raise the necessary funds for a future trip to Quebec, Canada. Other activities were enjoyed by all the members. Schaefer, D. Malek, D. Muntz, A. Hawley, M. Topping the list was the preparation and devouring of Spanish food, such as tortillas, enchiladas, and tacos. The members of the club met at the school and performed their culinary arts in the Home Economics Room. The Alka Seltzer Company made record sales that night we were told. Another very much appreciated activity was the field trip taken to the art musuem in the fall. Row One: V. Dessoffy. D. Hicks, Mrs. Yedidsion. D. Dilworth, J. Ritter, J. Asad. M. Miller, B. Boyce. The Future Homemakers of America Club has been ex- tremely active this year. Numerous scintillating field trips were favorites of the members of the club. Flower and garden shows were well attended by the club. A favorite of the FHAer’s was the initiating of new members into the club. Penalties were doled out by the old members of the club and new members became resigned to their fate—this year wearing different colored knee socks, hair in pig tails, and the letters “FHA” on their person where it would be clearly visible. This resulted in a mass of odd-looking girls in the halls of dear, old Buckeye. Row One: P. Clay. V. Bessmer. D. Gajoch. Row Provateare. P. Ferguson, T. Bryant. Row Three: P. Two: S. Keaton. P. Regional, and finally National winner of the Dairy Production Efficiency Contest. The Future Farmers of America par- ticipate in many contests each year and as always, the Buckeye chapter cap- tured many awards and honors at the district, state, regional, and national levels. The Future Farmers prove they comb the straw out of their hair by choosing a Queen and Court. These beauties are then honored at the Annual Parent Ap- preciation Banquet. Doug Raubenoult. Sales of packages of combs in- creased the treasury and aided in the sponsoring of the girls athletics program, initiated this year. Among the sports were football, basketball, track, and baseball. The girls also had a fun-packed year. The annual Halloween party was well- attended and greatly enjoyed. The girls also went to the Ice Follies, as is the tradition. A surprise baby shower for Mrs. Nutter was another of the numerous activities the club participated in. The group also went bowling and assorted other entertainments later in the year. It was indeed a rewar- ding year. 32 Mrs. Nutter beams in anticipation of all manner of goodies at her surprise shower. Jackie Hellmers portrays a real cool cat at the G.A.A. Halloween party. Gee. Awww! Lunch time finds Jerry, Dennis, Larry, and Dwight gathered in the hall. Discussing the latest fashions, guys? 33 Work, Work, Work! When Will It End? Tossed on a sea of preliminary pages, pictures to be taken, and endless copy to be typed, the staff of the 1973 REFLECTOR embarked on their year-long assignment. The goal—a polished year- book for students to save and look back on. With Mr. Clarico as advisor, the job was tackled. Deadlines seemed to pop into the present from the safely-distant future. Tempermental cameras and flashes decided to take vacations” when there were activities to photograph. Editors, bleary-eyed from lack of sleep, counted days to deadlines and prayed often. The harried business manager saw decimals in her sleep as the financial records piled up. Typists and proofreaders mumbled to themselves as last minute pages to check encircled them the day before deadlines. And then, blessed relief as all watched the package of their work carried out and mailed. Row One: T. Mohler. T. Reusch. S. Johnson. D. Muntz. Row Two: J. Barth. J. Vasel. K. Maringer. S. Evin. In order to form a more perfect yearbook, it often becomes necessary to raise money besides that of the subscriber. This was accomplished quite well by the Ad Sales Staff. Com- prised of eleven seniors and the REFLECTOR staff, space in the 1973 REFLECTOR was sold to businesses and patrons. This was a definite aid in the lowering of the year- book price. Ads were sold in the Medina County area and surrounding counties. The day out of school was a welcome change to the participants, yet was a challenge in meeting and coping with the varied types of people. A lot of headwork was required in the figuring of prices and receipting, also. Now. Scott, behave! You know that yearbooks aren’t to hit people with. Kathy doesn’t look scared, though. Sadistic bunch! Nancie and Janet seem to be discussing the deadlines. Or maybe how on earth to clean up that pigpen yearbook room! One of the hardest working groups of Buckeye Students was the Spectrum Staff. Putting out numerous fantastic issues of that fabulous paper constituted the time and effort of many reporters, typists, and the publication staff. One of the features of the paper, which has become a tradition, was the publishing of the Senior Sketches. These Sketches gave the Seniors a chance to “get back at a teacher,” remember a plea- sant or not so pleasant happening at Buckeye, or just to tell the world what he or she prefers-from food to people. Club, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, is a nation-wide organization of youth whose purpose is to aid in preparing for jobs in today's society. The students are able to con- fer with adults and other students about the job opportunities and chances for advancement in their chosen fields. All members of O.W.E. and D.C.T. are automatically members of V.I.C.A. Occupational Work Experience, otherwise known as O.W.E. is a work-study organization comprised of Juniors and Seniors. These students attend school for half a day and work at a job of their choice for the other half. Under Mr. Ridley’s guidance, they are prepared for “being on their own.” Many Facets To D.C.T. Program D.C.T., officially recognized as Diversified Cooperative Train- ing, deals exclusively with seniors planning on working after high school. To be eligible for the program, you must be skilled in the area you wish to be placed for work. Three credits are received for this work program if it is completed in a satisfactory manner. This means all academics are to be kept up, and school and work attendance above average. There are rules and regulations to be followed, and carry a great responsibility. All D.C.T. members are also members and participants in the V.I.C.A. organization on both state and national levels. Mr. Cate, coor- dinator and adviser, has been a real help to the group this year. While the football team held the crowd’s attention during the game, the marching band had the spotlight during pre- game and half-time. Fancy dance steps, high stepping twirlers, and swinging songs added to the excitement of the football season. Marching season also took the band to Medina for the county Ban- dorama where bandsmen performed with precision and skill. The end of football season brought many long hours of practice for the Christmas concert, spring concerts, Inland Conference Concert, and the long awaited Gradua- tion exercises. The end of football season also brought the beginning of basketball season and the added enthusiasm of the Pep Band performing at the games. The marching band performs one of their fantastic game halftime. This is an example of practice makes marching routines to a hit song during the football perfect. Smiles, pep, energy, and vitality were in abundance as the squad performed their dance and military drill routines to the accompaniment of the melodic, marching Bucks. The tri-captains for the team were Tim Schaefer. Bill Ross, and Scott Shelton. The Bucks overcame two early losses to win five games in a row. The Homecoming dance, held immediately following the game, highlighted the even- ing. The gym was decorated in the senior class colors. The girls wore dresses of ruby velvet. Their escorts wore brown Buckeye athletic blazers. For the first time in several years, the style and color of the dresses were kept a secret until Homecoming night. The court led the traditional Grand March after Co-captain Tim Schaefer crowned Miss Donna Muntz 1973 Homecoming Queen. The Bucks came close to upending state- ranked Columbia, losing by a mere two points in double overtime. The Bucks finished the season with a victory over rival Highland. In tournament action. Buckeye had to face a strong Lorain Catholic team. The Bucks played even with them for the first two quarters, but couldn’t contain them the second half. Buckeye lost the game 55-43. Jerry Coleman was selected for the first team, as Bill Ross received second team honors and Dennis Lenarth was honorable mention. JV’s Set Two Records Jerry has the ball again! Everything seems bigger than at the junior high! The halls are wider, the rooms are bigger, the seniors are taller, and the text books are fatter. Yet each freshman feels that he has grown by taking that step to a larger school; and by participating in the life of that school, he will continue to grow. While still caught up in the excitement of a new school, the freshmen add many new ideas and ways to the ones already established at Buckeye. So old and firm they scarely show the breeze. Were not. as twere. the merest mask of gloom. But stretched away unto the edge of doom. I should not be withheld but that some day Into their vastness I should steal away. Fearless of ever finding open land. Or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand. I would not see why I should e re turn back, Or those should not set forth upon my track To overtake me. who should miss me here And long to know if still I held them dear. They would not find me changed from him they knew. Only more sure of all I thought was true. FROST John Snyder will never be silent in the memories of his family and his many friends at Buckeye High. John was a very active member of the stu- dent body. John was on the varsity wrestling team, varsity track team, lettermen club, and was a student in the class of 1974. We shall never forget John. We will not allow the sands of time to erase the mark John left at Buckeye High School. 97 98 lOO SENIORS 101 Seniors Peek Out At A Brighter Future Never again will a class of seniors graduate from the original Buckeye High School. The class of 73 was proud, and yet somehow sad to leave its mark on the old school. During their last year, the students in the graduating class experienced the module system and the benefits and problems it produced. They overcame obstacles which often characterize a senior year: the toil of government class and income taxes, putting up with the underclassmen and crowded halls, losing the Battle Cry to the freshmen at a pep rally, leaving the place that’s been part of their daily lives for the past four years. The seniors took on Buckeye at full force, relishing the ups and coping with the downs. Now that they’ve left it behind, let us hope that the “old Buckeye will remain in their minds and hearts forever. Senior class officers are. top to bottom. Bill Ross. Senior Candids Even Seniors have to work, don't they, Mary? Is this a line up? The Last Class In Old B.H.S 122 FA CUL TY A DM IN IS TRA TION 123 ning season. Several years have been outstanding with exceptional athletes, trophies, and large write- ups of Buckeye's accomplishments. We knew him as a teacher and ad- visor. As a biology teacher he taught well enough that several students over the years have placed in state- wide competition on the state achievement tests. As an advisor to the Letterman Club, he initiated a practice at Buckeye which has become part of Buckeye tradition- the Lettermen’s Donut Day. We Dedicate To Mr. Mike Lewis Coach Mike Lewis We, the members of the 1973 REFLECTOR staff, are honored to be able to dedicate this yearbook to a faculty member as deserving as Mr. Lewis. We knew him as a coach. In the past five years he has talked of, actually preached of, winning through determination and dedica- tion, through sacrifice of self, in- testinal fortitude, and Buckeye Pride. The results have been tremendous. Every football and wrestling season under him has gone down in the records as a win- 124 125 Superintendent Located in the extension office, Mr. Bogard served as the Buckeye Local School District Superintendent for the 1972-1973 school year. His duties in- cluded not only the supervision of Litchfield, York, Liverpool, and Buckeye, but also the overseeing of the construction of the new high school. Even though he seldom saw the students as much as he did when he was principal, Mr. Bogard still remained openly friendly to all the pupils of Buckeye. Millard P. Bogard M. Ed. Kent State Local Superintendent 126 Organizing and making changes for the better comprised the forte of Mr. Clarico. Among his many innovations are included the expansion of the English and the Art curriculum and the institution of the modular system in the high school. Getting involved with students was a must with Mr. Clarico and it was not uncommon to see him participating in a game of volleyball or demonstrating his agility on the tram- poline. Assistant Principal Active as the student council ad- visor, the head hall monitor, and someone you could discuss your problems with, Mr. Boynar was a new and very much welcomed addi- tion to the administration of Buckeye. Always ready to help in a kind and courteous manner, Mr. Boynar was a friend to all. Don Boynar M.A. Akron University Assistant Principal ( 128 Guidance Department Conducting senior interviews, inter- preting test score data, helping students complete forms, and aiding students in making the right schedul- ing decisions, are some of the many duties of Buckeye's guidance counselors. Mrs. McCoy’s charge are the juniors and seniors primarily, and Mr. Crisafulli deals with the freshmen and sophomores, but either counselor will eagerly help you, should you need assistance. Joseph Crisafulli M. Ed. Westminister U. Guidance Counselor Beverly McCoy M. A. Akron University Guidance Counselor Office Secretaries If you should happen to need change for a buck, or an eight-cent stamp, or an envelope, or a dismissal slip, or an announcement made, or any informa- tion about where any student is during a certain module, then you’ve come to the right place. Mrs. Schaefer and Mrs. Fletcher will very pleasantly attempt to help you solve such dif- ficulties as those that may arise during the day. Office helpers, first row: L. Beriswill, S. Holda, D. Mrs. Laverne Brown is employed as the clerk of Buckeye Board of Education. Mrs. Brown operates in the trailer, also, and is the treasurer of the school board. 131 Math Department Together standing as a symbol of Buc- keye Mathematics, Mr. Kramer and Mr. Haumesser readily come to mind as representing fairness, friendliness, and of course the logic of mathematics. Many outside activities occupy the spare time of Mr. Kramer and Mr. Haumesser. Mr. Kramer is a coach and advisor of the chess club, while Mr. Haumesser was advisor of the fantastic class of '73. Now a student can choose a subject such as general science, or chance taking chemistry. Next year at the new high school, the facilities will be much more desirable, thus making science more of a challenge to the curious and industrious student. English Department Still retaining an unchanged appearance was the underclassmen’s English program. Conventional English 9 and English 10 remained at Buckeye for one last year, being taught by Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Jones, and partially by Mr. Barge. There is so much I would like to say about Buckeye and this year in order to plant more firmly in your mind the fond memories. 1972-1973 has held many activities which the staff and I have tried to record for you, the reader, in pictures. Naturally, it is im- possible to capture the complete beauty of Homecoming '73, the excitement of varsity sports, the enjoyment of school functions, the noise and joy of pep rallies, the anticipation of National Honor Society induction, the soft glow of the prom, and the pride and satisfaction achieved at graduation. Buckeye has un- dergone many changes and improvements. We have enjoyed Buckeye at its best. I want to thank my staff for their genuine dedication and hard work. A special thanks is due to Mr. Clarico for his help In ironing out complications and in being our much-needed advisor. I want to express my appreciation to the faculty for their cooperation and kindness. A thank you also to the student body for suppor- ting the staff, cooperating, and being interested. Please look through this REFLECTOR at your own pace and en- joy it. I hope we have recorded events to your satisfaction and pleasure. To you I proudly present this 1973 REFLECTOR.
