For relaxation Mr. Harrison golfs, so it was only natural that he also served as the golf coach for the past nineteen years. In a broader sense some 4000 plus students lives have been touched through his superb class- room instruction ln English, Phys- ical Education, Health or Drivers Education. Mr. Holko, Principal, has sald that, Coach Dick Harrison is one of the nnesf gentleman in the Akron School System: we are fortunate to have him at BuchteI. Due to his willingness to give of himself for the benefit of all the students at BHS, the Class of 1983 dedlcates this Griffin to Coach Dick Harrison. Brown. 4 The 1983 Griffin baseball team, known as The g X Running G-riffs for their aggressive base-running. went to the very limit of the season before being eliminated from the City Series playoffs in o heart-breaking, heartstopping 5-A loss to Ellet in 8 innings. The Griffs advanced to the sectional championship game before bowing to district finalist Medina. By far the most impressive statistical accomplish- ment was the stolen base. Buchtel stole 113 bases, in 20 different games and season high 13 against Canton McKinley. More importantly, the Running Griffs brought a little more of the winning w J tradition back to the old ball yard. -3 As 1983 becomes 1084 and the names and faces change, the foundation has been har- dened and the optimism for next year is ever growing. As the teaching continues and the leg- end of past greatness endures, the dream of future glory burns on. Ni A - 1 ,- -qfllk -Y . 5- . ' 4 'C R s ,. 'Q -, C .. .. ' 'N . L?-4. ,, , , - ... , C. Rankin Buchtel's Girls' Softball teom was organized this spring. Sign ups yielded 85 students with to mak- ing the first ever softball team. proved to be outstanding all-around players, bat- ting and fielding well. Miss Hodoh lead the team in batting average, RBI'S and slugging percentage. The team had some very exciting games particu- larly a double header sweep of East and a victory in their first sectional game. Though inexperience and errors proved costly throughout the season, there were many bright spots. Stacey Hodoh, Pam Rucker, and Tanya Bass Front, M. McDay, T. James, C. Burns, K. Brown, T. Banks, M. Harmon I feel that the cheerleaders were the best cheerleaders Buchtel has ever had. They all possessed positive attitudes and everyone got along well together. We were all very close. We tried our best to cheer out teams on to victory. The games that really stood out were against Central-Hower ln both football and basketball and against East in basketball. We cheered our best at all games because we love the Buchtel Griftins deep down in our hearts. We competed at Cleveland State University cheerleading competition during the summer.
