The Buchanan High School Senior Class of 1952 Buchanan, Georgia Presents MEMOIRS ALMA MATER B. H. S. our Alma Mater To our vows of love To ourselves and to each other Faithful friends we’ll prove. Faithful, loyal, firm and true Heart bound to heart we will be Year by year the ages through 'Till in heaven we meet. High School days are swiftly fleeting Soon we’ll leave these halls Ne’er to join another meeting 'Neath these Hallowed walls. FOREWORD As we launch out facing life’s problems, more-or-less on our own, and as the years pass, our school experiences will become somewhat dimmed but most certainly not for- gotten. The Memoirs staff of 1952 have undertaken here to concisely formulate a plan of rehearsal that will remind us from time to time of our most pleasant years spent in the Buchanan High School. We invite you to use this production as a reflector when a bit of cheer is needed on your voyage of life. And let us hope that our efforts will serve to stimulate you in the days ahead, as these pages vivify ideals and principles of happy living. We dedicate the 1952 edition of MEMIORS to Mrs. Darlene Weaver who has exemplified so many inspiring and desirable characteristics of a good life. Her thinking and teaching are characterized by those deep- rooted southern traditions that have been the pass-words from generation to generation--devotion, loyalty, and pride. Though endowed with many convictions as regards peoples, philosophies and ideals, she is guided by a spirit of fairness. She brooks no favors for prejudices and cannot be easily forgotten. She is constantly laboring in an effort to saturate the minds of youth with these ideals, which will enable them to meet the mystifying problems of society with a sane solution, and make a permanent contribution to a better way of life. 3 ANNUAL STAFF EDITOR Joy Williams ASSISTANT EDITOR Reba Jeffers (not shown) BUSINESS MANAGERS Annice Hancock Roger Daniel SPORT’S EDITORS Joyce Holcombe Ray Jeffers PHOTOGRAPHER Johnny Davenport PROOF READERS Dorothy Floyd Donald Rowell TYPISTS Lorene Bishop Douglas Floyd ADVISORS Mrs. Evelyn Sanford Mrs. Darlene Weaver 4 SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Students: Is fame your goal? It should well be. Let us remember that fame, like money, should neither be despised nor idolized. An honest fame based on worth and merit, and gained by prudence and industry, will perpetuate the names of the great and the good. Be not so eager for popular applause as to forget that the same breath that blows up a fire may blow it out again. True fame is the Light of Heaven- God. There is a philosophy that no human being who halts between two opinions, who cannot decide promptly, and having, decided, act as though there was no such word as fail, can never be great. Ceasar would never have crossed the Rubicon nor Washington the Delaware, had they not fixed their stern gaze on objects far beyond the perils at their feet. Solomon said, “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding but he that is hasty of spirit exhalteth folly. Our advice is to keep cool under all circumstances. We should learn to command our feelings and act prudently in all the ordinary concerns of life. This will better prepare us to meet sudden emergencies with calmness and fortitude. We must bid adieu to vice, to sloth, to flatteries and ease--WORK. 5 MRS. J.F. GRIFFITH English MRS. DARLENE WEAVER Commercial MRS. VERNICE HUTCHESON Home Economics HIGH SCHOOL FACU1TV MR. PAULINE TEAL MISS KA THLEEN EAVES 9 Class History and Destination As I go back into the years to relate the history of this graduating class of '52, I hesitate to put some of the memories in writing. After all, when a brilliant group of boys and girls like these land in one pile to spend twelve years of their important lives together there are bound to be occasions when almost unbelievable action takes place such as that important day, February 8, 1947, when we were in the eight grade and Melvin Agan actually said the ABC’s for his teacher, tired, worn-out and growing old, Mrs. Avis Matthews. Little did he know he’d have to be tortured by another hectic woman for four, long, almost unbearable years when Mrs. Apphia Griffith attempted the impossible task of teaching our class English. Would you believe that when we were in the ninth grade we learned that it’s more proper to say “we isn’t than we aren’t?” Yes, we’re a marvelous class. Returning to the early years of our school life I would like for this school to know what a nice quiet class we have always been. Year by year as we climbed upward on the educational ladder we left teachers crying at our sad departure and dreading so much having to go through the next year without seeing our bright faces sitting in their classrooms to inspire them and give them courage to go through the day. At the beginning of our Freshmen year, we had quite a number of new students coming from Felton and other large metropolises. Being “brids of a feather, we flocked together into one big gracious family. As we grew older and became more self-relying, some of our classmates, deciding they had reached their peak of learning, turned to the outside world. Some of them got married, some weren’t so unfortunate. Others joined Uncle Sam’s great army, but the great majority of the class remained, determined to see it through. Now we come to the end of our last year in high school and though we don’t want to leave the impression that we're boasting, I’d like for you to know that our Superintendent, has through the years, marveled at our intelligence and our great desire to study. He says we are, without doubt, the quietest class he’s ever had the pleasure of presenting diplomas to. We’ve never given him the least bit of trouble and we’ll be among the first on his list of precious memories. As we are soon to go out on our own diamond and try our many different outfields, our fondest dream is that the envious freshmen will follow in our foot- prints on the sand of time. As for our destination, who knows? Our talents are unlimited. Of course in two years the girls may be at home washing baby diapers with one hand, whipping Junior with the other and peeling potatoes with their big toes. We boys may be from sun-up to sun-down following these animals called mules. Jackasses, anyway something with four legs that you plow dirt with. However, time will tell so let’s just sit back and wait, huh? Donald Rowell SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS . President Vice President . .Secretary . .Treasurer Joy Williams . . . To Nelda and Velda Posey, Reba Jeffers and Lorene Bishop leave their height-6’5” tall, and weight- 145 2 pounds to distribute as the twins wish. Edward Crawford leaves his entire fortune, one nickel, to Kenneth Griffith. Roger Daniel wills his ability to chew gum in Mrs. Hutcheson’s class, to Walter Price. Donald Rowell leaves Bobby Posey only part of his brains, as he will need a pound or two for his own use. Doyal Dennis is just leaving--thank Goodness. To Marlene Wilson and Earlene Brown, Dorothy Floyd leaves her timidity, use it girls. Pauline Brown wills all her excess fat to Jo Ann Daniel but where can Pauline find any? Garden Green leaves his big friendly smile to Richard Carter. Charles Head leaves Jack Head his red Convertible. Got to keep it in the family. To Vivian Mozley, Annice Hancock leaves her book-keeping ability. Wesley Cash wills Bobby Dowdy his tall, dark, and handsome looks, although he doesn’t need them. Shirley Browning leaves her long goldie locks to Jerry Weaver. To Roger Lassiter, Bobby Bowling leaves his speed on the football field and on the basketball court. Ray Jeffers wills to Hal Biggers his technique with the girls. Melvin Agan would be glad to will someone his big mouth, but he couldn't get along without it. And besides, who wants it? To Doris Tolbert, Hazel Hardin leaves her many sweaters. One gets cold, you know. Coy Cash and Harold Blackmon will to Phil Bowman, their love for B. H. S. Johnny Davenport leaves his job as office boy, to anyone, who can ring a bell and contend with the continous growl of the “Bear. Shirley Goldin leaves her mischievous ways to Bertha Cheatwood, hoping she uses them. Douglas Floyd wills his feet, toes, and all, to Jerry Eaves. To Billy Garner, Johnny Griffin leaves anything he can get by without. Alton Wilson leaves his little finger and “Ride of the Dare Devils” to Chalmus Kiser. Charles Dennis would leave his guitar to Joe Loyd Biggers, but he will need it to serenade his ever-loving girls. To the Junior Class we leave Mrs. Griffith and we know you will love her as we do. I, Joy Williams, leave my Senior Class Presidency to the poor miserable creature who has the misfortune to be elected next year. 16 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Vivian Mozley .
