SADD Week heightens awareness Five intensive days of concentration on problems related to student drinking ond driving was the focol point behind Duchonon s introduction to SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk). The program stressed the responsibility ond encouraged the students to think obout how their actions not only affect their lives bur their families, friends, ond even strangers. Senior Beth Hicock wos the chairperson of the program. Other students involved were seniors Veronica Wolf, ond Dill Weimer, ond sophomore Robyn Bagwell, Melissa Porter, Cindy Glovin, ond Tonio Piarti. This group put in o lor of hord long hours to moke the program o success. Each doy hod o certain agenda. Mon- day the students were given o short survey, ond they received bumper stickers, key rings, ond buttons all carrying the SADD logo on them. An inspirational film. KEVIN'S STORY, wos the headline for Tuesday. Kevin wos o student who killed o young girl while under the influence. Following the film, reformed alcoholic teen spoke to her peers about the rroumo of alcoholism, ond Solly Colemon, o counselor from Lutheran center in Niles, gave a moving speech. On Wednesday, the students experienced the most powerful speech which wos by Mr. Lorry Rotto, the SADD Notional representative from Michigan. He explained the origin ond meaning behind SADD. Fifteen oreo schools were invited to send five students each to hear Mr. Rotto speok. The Duchonon eighth grade closs wos also in attendance. Michigan state trooper Dove Minzey owed the students on Thursday with o gruesome slide show of true to life acci- dents that were results of drinking ond dri- ving. Afterword, the students were given the opportunity to osk questions obout the show or the consequences of drinking ond driving. Friday, the students were presented o special way to look or the focts. RADD (Rockers Against Driving Drunk) gave o special in-school concert in the gym. They also furnished the music for o donee held that evening. A guest oppeoronce wos mode by local musician Tommy Show. He expressed his views obout the notional alcoholism situation ond concluded the pro- gram with o song.
