Buchanan High has changed much in irs years of exisronce. Clubs, sports, classes, and styles keep cropping up, and then dissappeoring. The population hos in- creased obouf four times. In 1923, Duchonon students had a brond new school. It hod 23 rooms with the junior high in a corner of the building. There were from 30-40 students in a class and about 10 teachers in the 20's. Classes were different from ours. Some were borony, economics, zoology, civics, agriculture, hygiene, or- thography. and domestic science. A wood shop starred in 1926. There were many dubs, including the commercial, alpha agrarian, Helen, Glee, Civics, Science, and Usher Clubs. There were two literary clubs, a debating ream, on orchestra, Le Cercle Francois (French Club), ond the Microphone, the school paper which ap- peared in the Derrien County Record. The main sports of the twenties were football ond boskerboll. Others were rrock and baseball. Girls played inter-class tennis, soccer, ond basketball. There were no j.v. or freshmen sports. Parties were held by classes by the river or in the gym. The classes had wienie roasts in the hills, and initiated freshmen by pulling them through McCoy Creek. Styles for the bobbed-haired girls were short skirts and sailor blouses. Varsity sweorers were popular with boys. The thirties sow o library of 2000 volumes; only six people could fit in the librory at once. There were 40-100 students in each class and 20 teachers. New clubs were the Latin Club, the Future Farmers of America, the Girls' Athletic Association, the Magic Chefs (boys who liked to cook), and the B Club (for boys with vorsity letters). New classes were art and industrial arts. Home Economics reploced domestic science. Hair for girls was short ond curly while boys still wore varsity sweaters. Dances were first held in the Gym (today's librory). As the world rocketed into the atomic age, BH5 changed, too. The number of senior boys was down because many joined the service, and uniforms dotted the holls. Some classmates died in combat. New clubs were the Jr. Bed Cross, the Librory Club, ond the student council. There was also o large band ond orchesrro. The boys wore jeans ond buttoned vorsity swearers. Girls wore plaid ond pleated skirts, with shoulder length curled hair. Boys' hair was short ond swept bock. Buchanan had not yet faced the Viet- nam war, the Beatles, lunor visits, inflation, or MTV.
