With the ’77-’78 team leaving them to defend the titles of District and Regional champs, and being the 4th best team in the state with the best record, they no doubt had their work cut out. The 10 member team put forth a com- bined effort to earn a 10 and 12 record, showing their skills despite being young and for the most part inexperienced (with only two returning from the ’77-’78 team). Although losing to Berrien Springs in the District Championship 48-42, the Buchanan Basketball team has nothing to be ashamed of. If anything, they should be proud of their accomplishment and looking forward to next year’s team, which will have the experience needed to be hard to beat. Football this year at Buchanan provided excitement as the Bucks once again proved to be a dominating force in the Blossom- land Conference. The thirty-three man squad, 21 of them juniors, wound up the season with a record of five wins and four losses. Kicking seemed to be the strong point this year, as Senior Bob Miller booted his way into the record books. He was South- western Michigan’s leading kicker and was named to the First Team All-State squad. Buchanan .. .18 - 28 . . Niles Buchanan .... 23 • 14 . Brandywine Buchanan ....28 - 0 . . . It also gave them a two year record of 27-3 for a remarkable win- ning percentage of 90%, best in all sports at Buchanan. At one point during the beginning of the season they had won 16 straight dual meets. They are presently undefeated in the last 15 straight dual meets at home. In the league the Bucks tied for 2nd behind powerful Lake- shore while the girl team placed 3rd. Highlights of the season included: 1. Dennis Decker, Debbie Marbeiter, and Reba Batchelor qualifying for the state meet. 2. Debbie Mar- beiter breaking all the school records for girls and finishing 2nd in the league. 3. Jeff Christie winning the J.V. League meet. Buchanan. . .35 - 22 . . . . . Edwardsburg Buchanan... .45 - 18. . . . . Berrien Springs Buchanan.. . .38 • 23 . . . . . Although their 13- 12 record was not as impressive as in past years, the team still provided many hours of exciting basketball. Nine of the twelve defeats came to state-rated teams, while five games were lost by five points or less, four of those being downed by only a single point. After a slow start, when they were 1-7 and 2-8, the Bucks finished strong, winning 11 of their last 15 games. It took a come from behind effort by the eventual State Champion River Valley Mustangs to eliminate them from the State Tour- nament in the District Championship. The Bucks were led in scoring by seniors Joe Watts and Ron Williams. Awards for team members were, Joe Watts, MVP and the award for most assists, Ron Williams, best defensive player, Jeff Butler, Mr. Hustle, Dave Price, Best Free Throw Percentage, and Andrew Watts, Most Improved Player. With a very impressive season displayed by this year’s J.V. team, basketball fans can keep a smile on their face as the winning tradition of Buchanan Basketball prom- ises to continue. J.V. Anita Layher displays perfect form. 102 Coach Bobo gives instructions on “how to win.” Putting together a volleyball team from scratch isn’t exactly an easy thing to do, and the job doesn’t get any easier when you are faced with having to defend titles won the previous year. But Coach Carolyn Karpinski set out at the beginning of the season to add to the two returning letter- men from last year's team. The girls on the team worked hard together. Although they have 7 wins and 16 losses on their record, what the record doesn't show is the improvement made, both individually and as a team. As the season progressed the team became very impressive and a tough competitor. Games that were lost were very close and exciting to watch. By the end of the season, the Buck Volley- ball team was hard to beat. Had they had a little more experience and time, the young team would have proven to be almost unbeatable.
