Bailey This, the 1969 edition of the Pines”, is specially dedicated to Mr. Pierre T. Bailey, who devoted so much of his time and life to the better- ment of Buchanan High and the welfare of its students. Mr. Bailey served the students of B.H.S., faithfully for 26 years. He came to Buchanan in 1942 as principal and held that office until 1954. He served as assistant-superintendent from 1954 to 1957, and rose to the top as superintendent of Buchanan Public Schools in 1957, a post which he held until his recent retirement in 1968. While at B.H.S., Mr. Bailey assisted in the presentation of diplomas to graduating seniors for 12 years as principal, and for the last time in 1968 he presented diplomas to the senior class at commencement exer- cises. For many years he crowned the king and queen and prince and princess of the prom, and, as Santa Claus, he visited the grade school classrooms at Christmastime in 1967. Indeed, all that Mr. Bailey accomplished has not been mentioned here, but the students of Buchanan High School are fully aware of and deeply appreciative for the great many services he has rendered them. Thank you, Mr. Bailey, from the student body of Buchanan High School and the 1969 graduates, for your praise-worthy and unselfish con- tributions to us and our school. We will respect and remember you al- ways. 4 Mr. Bailey, second from right, participated in the ground-breaking ceremonies at the site of the new Ottawa Elementary School. Mr. Bailey dressed up as Santa Claus and visited the elementary class rooms at Christmastime in 1967. Mr. Bailey crowned the king and queen and prince and prin- cess of the prom for many years. Mrs. Hawks presents Mr. Bailey with a res- olution declaring him Boss of the Year for 1968. Mr. Bailey presented many awards to seniors at Honors Convocation over the years. 5 W73 O Z rn in CLASS MOTTO We will not follow where the path may lead, but will go where there is no path and leave a trail. The Student Council promotes many student activities and helps to provide new facilities for the school. It also acts as a go-between in student body-ad- ministration relations. The Council regulates school dances, provides student transportation to out-of-town athletic events, and sponsors High School assem- blies . The Council strives to unite the students of Buchanan High to form a more loyal, high-spirited body which will be worthy of the praise and respect of stu- dents from other schools as well as fellow Buchananites. The cars used in the course are donated by Kennedy Motors and Habicht Ford; with funds dis- persed by the State Government and allocated through the Assistant Superintendent's office. Students are not required to take this course, but find it beneficial by receiving future lower insurance premiums and sheer delight in making their first ma- jor step toward accepting adult responsibility. 71 Officers: Treasurer, Randy Evans; President, Karen Trescher; Secretary, Barb Maxwell; Vice-President, Paula Thurston. Students Broaden French Education The French Club is comprised of third and fourth year French students. Their main goal is to broaden their knowledge of the French language and customs. Pep Club Spreads Spirit The Pep Club of Buchanan High this year is made up of Junior and Senior High students. They made the comeback, however, and helped cheer their Bucks on to victory. 75 Sportsmanship, Citizenship, Leadership, FRONT ROW: Rick Scamehom, Dan Topash, Roger Hassen, Ted Lake, Reggie Turner, Gary Elliott, Jim Stibbs, Eugene Bailey, Rich Backus. SECOND ROW: Secretary, Ron Marbei- ter; Treasurer, Pat Sexton. The major goal of the B-Club is to promote sportsmanship, citizenship, leadership, and scholarship in each of its members. These qualities are developed through participation in varsity ath- letics. Members learn how essential teamwork is, what a big part respect for fellow members plays in the success of the team, and the importance of determination. Funds for the treasury are obtained from the selling of ice cream bars and programs to the fans at home athletic events. The proceeds are used to finance a trip at the end of the school year for the senior members . Senior High boys who wish to become members must endure a week-long initiation which can be quite unpleasant at times. How- ever, the deep satisfaction and pride the new members feel when they first put on their B-Club jackets makes all the unpleasantries of initiation seem more worthwhile. 77 Margaret McClellan Terry Shirley, JoAnn Holcomb, Margaret McClel- lan, Johanna Strayer, Cindy Berry, Brenda Aalfs. Another year has come to pass at B.H.S. and the Buckhorn has played an important part in that year. This year the Buckhorn has been more of a student newspaper than it has been in the past. Stories from the Junior High, together with the Senior High stories, were printed in the paper, making it a school paper for everyone. Stories of interest to students appeared in the paper along with humorous articles such as the Mr. Natural cartoons and the Lost Cause of the Staff I production: SEATED: Cathy Bishop, Barb Kenney, Holly Swartz. Because school sports play a large part in B.H.S. life, a regular series called Rules and Regulations was included in the paper to explain the rules of each sport. The Buckhorn was published weekly by two alternating staffs. Hard work on the part of the writers, typists, printers, circulators, editors, and the Adviser, Mrs. Marks, certainly was responsible for the Buckhorn’s successful year. Varsity Band Has The 1968-69 Symphonic Band, conducted by Da- rius Jaspers, experienced another very rewarding and profitable year. Getting off to a good start, the band received a straight 1 rating at the District Marching Festival. Concert season was highlighted by a trip to St. Joe for the District Festival where, once again, the band was the recipient of a straight 1 rating. The State Contest was hosted by Jackson Junior High School this year. The concert season came to a close with the ending of the Fine Arts Con- cert on May 10. Other events of the year included the Blossom Parade, the Memorial Day Parade, and a perform- ance at Honors Convocation. As profit-making projects, Tag Day and the an- nual Candy Sale were financially rewarding. All in all, the past year was a very memorable one for Buchanan's Varsity Band. 88 Twirlers: Peggy Gooch, Carol Hamilton, Chris Wantz, Kathy Young. They performed during Homecoming, once with the Varsity Band in a combined half-time show, in the Halloween Parade, and in the Tag Day Parade. Due to the large number of student members this year, the Junior Band was divided into two equal bands for the concert season. Band A, under the di - rection of Mr. Shelles, and Band 1, under the di- rection of Mr. Jaspers played at the Winter Music Festival and at the District Festival where they re- ceived a No. 2 rating. The Class of '69 presented the three-act comedy, Harvey , by Mary Chase as the an- nual Senior Play. The play, about Elwood P. Dowd, played by Jim Hagey, portrays his es- cape from society with the aid of Harvey, his invisible rabbit and pal. The great psychia- trist, Doctor William Chumley, played by Jack Leggett, and Elwood's sister, Veta Louise Simmons, played by Sandy Schneider, desper- ately try to convince Elwood that Harvey doesn't exist. The whole play centers around the hilarious misadventures of Elwood and his family. As usual, the seniors suffered a slight mishap during the production of the play. The auditorium ceiling didn't fall but a certain pic- ture on the fireplace did, shattering glass everywhere. The play was a startling success in spite of that. This year's directors were, Mr. and Mrs. David Marks with Ann Johnson as student director and Fred Moore as stage manager. The Varsity Football team had a rough season this year ending up with a 2--7 record. The team lacked the en- thusiasm of previous years and this in- stigated the loss of the Blossomland Conference championship for the first time since its origination in 1963. Next year they will be working for a return to the Conference championship. Then, once again, the crowd will be listening to the roar of victory. Football gives a boy a chance to develope his talent and provides us with some indication of the quality of the future Varsity team. This year the team ended up on the top of a 4--3 sea- son. Coaches VerHage and McKeel led their boys on with good coaching and pep. Next year we will look for great things as this team graduates to the Varsity. BACK ROW: Gary Houseworth, Leonard Huebner, Mike Burks, Robby Habicht, Neil Beaverson, Kim Moyer, Jeff Shabinski, George Dreitzler, Cary James, Phil Peari- son. When a freshman boy parti- cipates in Freshman Football, he gains more than just the ability to block and tackle; he gets the personal satisfaction of achieve- ment that far outweighs the bumps and bruises. A lot of talent was displayed on this year's team along with a great amount of potential to be developed in the coming years. 109 Wrestling KNEELING: Ron Marbeiter, Fred Wingo, Bill Glossinger, Eugene Bailey, Roger Hassan, Wayne Dockery Melvin Cashier. STANDING: Coach—Doug Borgert, Jeff Kyles, Bob Aalfs, Ron Gwin, John Bagwell. Wrestling is probably the most in- dividualized sport there is at Buchanan. The entire match may depend on one performance alone. This year the most dependable men were Roger Hassen, who went to the State Heavyweight championship and Eugene Bailey, who was the District champion. Next year there will be many re- turning lettermen to insure another suc- cessful season. no Varsity Basketball KNEELING: Reggie Turner, Bruce Pelkey, Steve Berry, David Hassan, Dale Russell, Jeff Clark, Pat Sexton. STANDING: Manager--Tom Olsen, Coach--Don Rennhack, Dan Merritt, Steve Klingerman, Mike Aalfs, Dan Moore, Harlan Vastine, Willie Francis, Manager--Terry Walker. This year's Varsity Basketball team was very successful. First year coach, Don Rennhack, led the team to a Blos- somland Conference championship and a District championship. The Bucks closed the season with a 10--6 record. The team was led in scores by Dale Russell, who had a 19 point average per game and an average of 15 rebounds per game. Next year the team will have its work cut out for it, but the possibility of three straight Blossomland champion- ships is very good. t 112 Happy Bucks after District Championship win. BACK ROW: Mike Welsh, Coach--David Wishart, Ray Hartline, Vic Backus, Ray Hess, Pat McNeil, John Gorbitz, Mike Travis, Stacy Whitelaw. This year's team did very well in the conference, winning nine and losing one. Leading scorer for the team was Harlan Vastine, who had a 15 point average per game. Coach, Dave Wishart, in his first year as J.V. coach did very well in coming out strong against the tough competition of the conference. 114 Freshman Basketball FRONT ROW: George Dreitzler, Dan Cauffman, Neil Beaverson, Robby Habicht, Dave Zdenahlik. BACK ROW: Coach—Ed Me Keel, Jim Williams, Ed Morrissey, Cleavon Bradshaw. NOT PIC- TURED: Mitchell Thompson, Ron Bailey, Peter Richards. Freshman Basketball is one of the developers of fine Varsity players and this year may have proved to be no ex- ception . Coach Ed McKeel’s team placed second in the Berrien Springs Invita- tional . In coming years some of the faces in the above picture will be the stars for the Class of '12. 115 Varsity Baseball KNEELING: Steve Klingerman, Ted Lake, Steve Berry, Carl Riggins, Pat Sexton, Terry Walker. STANDING: Manager--Jack Walkden, Gary Dickow, Harold Heierman, Harlan Vastine, Roger Hassen, Don Simpson, Ron Aalfs, Coach—Dave Wishart. This year's Varsity Baseball team compiled a very fine 12--4 over-all rec- ord, but their 4--3 conference total left them off the pace needed for the cham - pionship. The team was led in both pitching and hitting by Steve Berry, who had a 6--2 pitching record with a 3.25 earned run average. In hitting he had a .375 average and the only home run. Pat Sexton had five triples for the season. Ted Lake led the team in stolen bases with 17. Next year's team will have several gaps in it but returning lettermen, along with upcoming J. V. 's should plug the holes. 116 Bucks score another run. INFIELD: Terry Walker, Steve Berry, Carl Riggins, Pat Sexton, Ron Aalfs, Don Simpson. 117 J. V. Baseball KNEELING: Ted McNealy, Mark Cornwell, John Gorbitz, Dan Cauffman, Derrell Chappell, John Griffin, Mike Travis, Bob Aalfs, Don Collins, Gary Starnes. STANDING: Coach--Mr. VerHage, Mark Rohde, Rick Riggins, Gary Mullins, Leonard Huebner, Gary Jorgenson, Ray Amiel, Jeff Adams. J.V. Baseball gives those boys, who would not get a chance to play on the varsity team, a place to develop for the future. Mark Rohde led this year's team in hitting with a .452 average. The leading pitcher was Gary Mullins, who had a 3--2 record. The team finished the season with a 5--5 record. Cross Country FRONT ROW: Don Newsom, Terry Walker, Mike Frost, Terry Irwin, Vic Backus, Mike Wesner. BACK ROW: Coach—Don Rennhack, Mark Newsom, Mark Gray, David Hassan, Dale Russell, Dale Strefling. Cross Country is the newest of Buchanan interscholastic sports. It takes a great deal of endurance to run the two-mile circuit. Every night during the fall season our Cross Country boys run at least three and sometimes four miles without stopping. Since this is a Fall sport, they often run in snow, slush, and cold rain; clad only in light weight warm up suits. Coach Don Rennhack did a fine job of guiding firstrate runners like Bruce Pelkey, Mark Gray and Terry Walker across the finish line. 119 Tennis KNEELING: JoeSchrimsher, Roy Thompson, Don Cramer. STANDING: Brad Batchelor, Tom Swem. NOT PICTURED: Coach--Alexander Tanji. Tennis is a very competitive sport and takes not only skill but enthusiasm. What the team lacked this year is skill they made it up with enthusiasm. Even though the Tennis team didn't win a match this year, they were not an easy push over. Next year the Bucks can only do better and with the returning lettermen they could do just that. 120 Golf Tom Leidy, Duane Zdenahlik, Travis Canfield, Jim Stibbs, Coach--Ed McKeel, Ray Hartline, David Zdenahlik, Jim Williams. First year coach, Ed McKeel, led his Golf team to a 14--4 dual meet rec- ord and also brought home the trophy in the Conference Meet for the fifth con- secutive time. The team’s low scores for the year ran with Jim Stibbs, first, and Tom Leidy and Travis Canfield, second. Canfield and Stibbs are the only members the team will lose due to graduation. 121 Track FRONT ROW: Tom Hassen, Gib Mattson, Wayne Young, John Grande, Bob Mosier, Terry Irwin, Charles Clifton, D°n,NRer°m' n Tne Jay, SECOND ROW: G ry Beaverson, Mel Cashier, Dan Merritt, Otis Wakes, Neil Beaverson, David Rohde, John Meek, Jeff Wood, Mark Gray, Jack Huston, Steve Hamilton, Mike Frost, Rick Frost, Joe Dudler. BACK ROW: Coach--Lyle McMullen, Mike Travis, Jim House, Mike Schwartz, Tom Swem, Fritz Thompson, John Gorbitz, Phil Pearison, Steve May, Ed Sisk, Dale Strefling. Track involves many more events than those held on the track itself, such as the shot put, pole vault, and high jump. This year's outstanding achieve- ment was on the cinders. Otis Wakes set a new school record for the 100 yard dash at 9.9 seconds. On the whole, the Track team was made up of underclassmen so next year's team should do even better than this year’s team. At the Conference Meet our Bucks placed third. 122 Mark Gray heads for the finish line in the mile run.
