Here, seven hundred of us students have just completed another year of our edu- cation. We have been well prepared to face the years which will follow, what- ever they may bring. All of us are proud of our school and the wide curriculum which it offers. We are also proud that each student has had an equal oppor- tunity to participate in our school's large variety of classes and activities which develop well-rounded personalities. 3 ln our school, we are wel trained in the academic field We may easily continue ou education at an institution o higher learning when we leavi B, H. S. We each have an opportunity for practical training. The girls may learn to cook, sew, and manage a household. The boys may learn to operate various ma- chines and thus they may step directly into an industrial vocation from high school. E 55 'I - W 0-hwy 4 Our athletic department, enhanced by up- to-date facilities and expert guidance, has done a great deal toward developing physical skill and sportsmanship in each ot us. tif YQ We may study whichever of the fine arts our talents may indicate. Many a future career has been shaped by the discov- ery and development of such talents here in Buchanan High School. Our social development is not slighted. We have many opportunities throughout the school year to meet together and share our moments of laughter and enjoyment. Our regular chapel programs provide us with a few quiet moments each month in which we can be thankful for all the privileges we enjoy in our free school system. Those of us who are interested in drama have an opportunity to take part in several productions during our few years of high school, All of these things combine to make up our life at BUCHANAN HIGH SCHOOL. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration and Faculty Pages 7-16 Seniors Pages I 7-34 Classes Pages 35-54 Organizations Pages 55-84 Sports Pages 85-I O7 ' -'12 ....., Es Q, ' X ',f f Mg'f5H,g,?Qff3bff'? However, the crowd noticed a change in the Buchanan ball club, playing with a new determination and confidence, the Bucks won the game. Excite- ment was already high and the Bucks' followers were thrilled by the tense and usually close games. An epidemic of basketball fever raged through the homes of Buchanan. It even spread to out- lying districts as the tourney progressed. Buchanan students and townspeople followed the team all the way, sometimes leav- ing jobs and studies behind to cheer the Bucks on to another victory. The Bucks brought an extra burst of applause from State niewswriters when they defeated the top-rated team in Michigan's Class B, Lansing's St. Mary's, to move to the semi-finals at Lan- sing. STATE TOURNAMENTS Behind the scenes at State, the :oaches met to plan the strategy at the coming contests. Each op- Josing team presented a new :hallenge to the fighting Bucks. The Bucks became runners-up in the Class B Tournament when they were defeated by a close margin by the tall River Rouge Days. Buchanan welcomed home their Champs with an all-out celebration, and in their hearts the team, and the townspeople as well, knew that the boys had gained an important victory in sportsmanship, and the l954-55 basketball team is one Buchanan High School will never forget. Fisher B CLUB The Buchanan Varsity Letter Winners' Club, under the direction of Athletic Director Roy Steffen, is one of the most efficient service clubs in high school. Following the fall initiation, the B Club's membership was increased to thirty-six, the largest membership on record. Because of this increase in membership, the B Club was able to sell pro- grams at football and basketball games. This, along with the ice cream concession, provided the Club with more than enough money to send the seniors on their annual spring trip to Chicago. Because of the athletic program at Buchanan, the B Club holds two initiations during the year. These initiations are held in the spring and in the fall to provide for the athletes who compete in only one sport. Before a pledgee can fully qualify as a member of the B Club, he first must pass through the trial week, During this week the pledgee must look up to all B Club members and treat them with due respect, After the trial week, the initiation is held, and all the pledgees who are able to pass the easy tests are qualified as B Club members. Because of these added activities, i954-55 has been one of the most prosperous years for the B Club. Jim Conrad OFFICERS Sec. S, Pendley Pres.-L. Phoenix 'K V. Pres.-C. Schau Treas,iL.
