The annual HONOR CONVOCATION was held on May 28, 1954 to recognize those who have achieved outstanding honors during the year. After a lapse of one year the Velmarian Literary Society again presented medals to those students who won highest honors in the annual writing contest. Awards were presented in the fields of essay, short story, and poetry. The first place winners were: Seventh and Eighth Grades Short Story-Marjorie Cline Poetry-Anna Holston Ninth and Tenth Grades Short Story-William Rice Poetry-Lorraine Sigle Eleventh and Twelfth Grades Short Story-Ianis Sexton Poetry-Rolph Anderson Essay-Ruth Derflinger Rolph Anderson was the recipient of the Velma E. Dunbar Award for outstanding creative writing sub- mitted during the year. Kay Koenigshof was the senior girl selected this year by the local D. A. R. chapter to receive the D. A. R. citizenship award. The receiver of this award is chosen on the basis of outstanding characteristics of patriotism, dependability, leadership, and scholarship. Mr. Elbers presented to Pauline Burns the D. A. R. award for excellence in United States history. Ramon Sexton was presented by the Optimist Club the American Government Award for scholarship, leadership, and service. Ninth and tenth grade Latin students receiving an A or A- average were presented with certificates. Two outstanding students in second year Latin were pre- sented keys by Mrs. Weaver. Those giving exceptional service to the Buckhorn were awarded pins and certificates by Miss Hargis. A member of the junior class is selected each year to attend Wolverine State meetings. The member selected to attend Boys' State was lim Conrad, with Richard Coonfield alternate. Mr. Decker presented to Peirce Behrendt the Bausch and Lomb Science Award for excellence in science during high school. This year's valedictorian, Sara lane Scameheorn, received a year's subscription to the Reader? Digest. This year the De Kalb award went Ed Speckine who showed exceptional interest in and leadership in F.F.A., and had an excellent farming program. The Girls' Athletic Association award was prgscntetl to Shirley Nordin who demonstrated outstanding athletic endeavors while a member of the G. A. A. This award is based on leadership, tolerance, friend- ship, loyalty, and co-operation. onor Gonuocafion Sally Scameheorn, Bob Pattengale, Elaine Koenigs- hof, and Tom Kent were the seniors who were awarded band pins by Mr. Peppel for their outstanding serv- ice to the band while they were members. The Eighth Grade American Citizenship Award was presented to Sharon Stelter and Leo Backus. Good citizenship, scholarship, dependability, im- provement, and extracurricular activities constitute the decision as to what Senior receives the Castle Civic Award. This award was given to Sara Marrs this year. Each month the official shorthand and typewriting tests from GREGG AWARDS DEPARTMENT are given to those students majoring in the business courses. The following students have qualified for awards in the various classifications given: SHORTHAND PINS-100 words per minute and 9504, accuracy in transcribing the shorthand notes on the typewriter. Roland Brado, Sally Scameheorn. SHORTHAND CERTIFICATES-80 words a minute and 952, accuracy. Alice Hearington, Shelby Wood. SHORTHAND CERTIFICATES-60 words a minute and 952, accuracy. Sandra Fleaner, Sandra Hanlin, Freida Price, Rita Stubbs. SHORTHAND COMPLETE THEORY CER- TIFICATES-A vocabulary test of 100 words based upon the principles of Gregg Shorthand. Rolanda Brado, Nancy Lozicki, Sally Scameheorn. TYPEWRITING CERTIFICATES-60 words per minute for a ten-minute writing with five or less errors. Rolanda Brado, Sally Scameheorn. Fifty words a minute. Shelby Wood. - Forty words a minute. leanine Collings, Sandra Hanlin, Alice Hearington, Nancy Lozicki, Ianet Nelson, Wil- liam Vite. Thirty words a minute. Pearl Baker, Howard Bennett, Beverly Boyle, Carol Gamble, Earl Iudy, Tom Kent, Donna Korn, Charlottee Noe, Donna Poole, Ioan Roland, Robert Samuel, Ianis Sexton, Sonia Spaulding, Anne Tibbles. Senior students attaining an average of B or better through their four years of high school were awarded scholar medals.
