A I 2, , A ...W ,.,,.,...,-l-............F.W.--Y-mfvfv-wa-wr BANDfUMDORCHESTRA Cherry Heim This past season of '33 has been one of unusual success for both band and orchestra. There were four football games and eight basketball games for which the band furnished music. Also it has paraded on sev- eral occasions. There are twenty-eight members, of which two are sen- iors, George Remington and Robert Watson, participating in the band under the capable and inspiring instruction and direction of Mr. Ralph Robinson. Mr. Robinson also instructs and directs the orchestra. There are twenty-seven members, of which three are seniors:+Hope Kelley, George Remington, and Robert Watson. The orchestra this season has given some very good interpretations of the Well-known classics. They have played for many banquets including The Lions Club and the Father and Son banquet held at the Methodist Church. GLEECLUB Annabelle Dalenberg During the first half of the school year the Glee Club practiced for the music festival held at St. Joseph, December 5. This music festival was presented by the members of the glee clubs of Berrien County and Dowagiac. After the festival waslover, Mr. Robinson began Work on the musi- cal comedy, Chonita. The operetta was given December 15. The Glee Club sang carols at the Christmas party given for the chil- dren by the Civic Association and the American Legion. At various other times they sang numbers during general assembly. Twenty-seven

DRAIVIATICS SENIOR PLAY The senior play of '34 was the credible comedy Regatta by Ruth McKennan. The action of the play was centered about the regatta which was to take place at the home of Stephen Worthington Uames Everinghaml on Long Island. Stephen is an ardent speed boat devotee and he employs Jack Hart- ford lGeorge Spattal to pilot Twinkle Ditto in the regatta. The house- hold is suddenly augmented by the arrival of Mrs. Winsborough KAudrey McCllenJ and her daughter, Cynthia, Uane Brineyl who through her mother's pleadings has become engaged to Stephen. Stephen is called to Chicago for a business conference, and while he is absent, Cynthia. and Jack fall in love. Stephen's son, Ted Worthington CChandos J acksonj, has been working on a safety device for airplanes and decides to demonstrate it the day of the regatta. While flying over the racing boats his plane goes into a tailspin and falls into the water. Jack leaps from the boat and saves Ted. Virginia Worthington Uean Russelll, the capricious daughter of Stephen, as co-pilot for the race takes the boat through for second place. It is then discovered that Ted's airplane plans have been stolen. Jack is under suspicion when Virginia and her gang make John, Uohn Godfrey! the old servant, confess, however he is forgiven. Ted and Beth fMary Donleyl, Mr. Worthingt0n's secretary, look for- ward to happy daysg Stephen releases Cynthia, and all ends happily. Other members of the cast were: Marjorie Hamilton, Ethel Sibley, Lee Frame and Richard Boone. Twenty-six

S O C I E T I E S VELIVIARIAN LITERARY SOCIETY George Remington- The Velmarian Literary Society, under thegsponsorship of Mrs. Dun- bar, has been one of the most active of the school organizations. This yearlthe club elected George Spatta, presidentg John Godfrey, vice-president, Jean Russell, secretaryg Helen Spatta, treasurer, and Thomas Quirk, literary critic. The purpose of the society is to enable the members to appreciate a better type of literature and to create an interest in the literary field. Each year the society sponsors a creative writing contest for grades from the seventh to the twelfth. A medal is given to each division for the best piece of work in the fields of short story, essay, and poetry. A pro- gram of original one-act plays Written by members of the club is given to finance the contest. The Velmarian Literary Society has been an organized body for ten years. The organizationlwas founded by Mrs. Dunbar in 1923. Since then, the club has become a tradition in the annals of Buchanan High School. MICROPHONE STAFF Lillias Peacock The Microphone staff under the supervision of Miss Helen Hanlin has discovered a new form of gathering feature copy to make the sheet more interesting this year. . A feature story is required Weekly of each reporter, which must be handed in with his assignments. This material may cover any occurrence during the Week which will be of interest to our readers There are eighteen students on the staff this year.
