DRAIVIATICS Senior Play The King Rides By by Lee Owen Snook was presented as the senior play of the class of '33. Mrs. Dunbar was the able director, and it IS largely through her efforts that the play was a success. The plot of the play is very clever. Judge Dorset iCharles Blake! and Cecily, his second wife CMarjorie Weaverj, are entertaining a certain European prince lEdward Rolenl and the judge's former wife fMarjorie Campbellj and daughter, Valeria CVivianne Wisslerj. Cecily has recently employed two servants, Simmons lRobert Ellisl and Loranda fA1ene Riley.D As it later turns out, the prince is a crook in disguise in league with the two servants who are planning to kidnap Valeria for ransom. The plot is exposed to the judge by Katherine Wells CHelen Mogfordj of the Chicago Tribune who recognizes the prince as a crook. The judge holds court in his own house, and the prince and Loranda make a clean breast of everything. The judge decides to give them another chance. Meanwhile, Simmons steals a valuable necklace but is caught, and the story ends with the prince and Loranda going to South America to start life over again. The cast is completed by Glenn Jesse, Dee Weaver, Doris Campbell and Tom Zerbe. The assisting staff and the business committees also did much to make the play successful, and they, too, deserve credit. junior Play The play presented by the class of '33 as juniors was Are You a Ma- son ? by Leo Dietrichstein. It was a success largely due to the patient efforts of Miss Hanlin, the director, who deserves much credit. The plot is formed because Frank Perry iMarvin Gross? and his fath- er-in-law, Amos Bloodgood fCharles Blakel, having promised their' wives CAlene Riley and Marjory Campbelll to join the Masons and, not having joined, have pretended that they are members of the lodge to avoid trouble. Also, neither knows the other isn't a Mason. Ernest Morrison CDee Weaverl, a friend of Frank who is really a Mason, now knowing the situation, invites the ladies to a ball given by the Masons. In the mean- time, George Fisher CEdward Rolenl, has consented to help Frank out of the mess by impersonating a girl, who is the daughter of an earlier mar- riage of Amos Bloodgood, in which the wife, Evangeline, was supposed to have killed herself. This complication forms humorous incidents, and the situation is finally straightened out. .Other members of the cast were Lee Donley, Thomas Zerbe, Harleigh Riley, Vivi.anne Wissler, Rosemary Thompson, Helen Mogford, Doris Campbell, and Marie Ellis. SOCIETIES Usher Club Freddie Portz The Usher Club which has been in existance since 1925, has ably prov- ed that it is one of the most essential organizations in school. Its pur- pose is to accummodate, in a systematic way, the needs of the public dur- ing the school entertainments. The club consists of members from the junior and senior classes ex- clusively. Only ten members are voted into the society each year. The club is under the sponsorship of Miss Dorothea Chandler. The officers are: Doris Campbell, president, Ruth Cripe, vice-president: Mary Donley, secretary-treasurer: Freddie Portz, head usher. Debating Anita Andrews The timely question, Resolved: that the State of Michigan should adopt an Income Tax, was the question debated by the members of the state debating league. The year so far has been very successful. By winning three out of four debates in the preliminaries, we received a wall plaque, which en- ables us to enter the state elimination series. The first three debates were with Dowagiac, Paw Paw, and Comstock. The fourth debate was lost to Grand Rapids Union. The first debate of the elimination series was with Coldwater, the dis- cussion was won by Buchanan. Those comprising the debate team are Helen Mogford, Marvin Gross, and Thomas Quirk. Other members on the debating squad are Mary Jane Zerbe, Donald Burrus, James Everingham, Otis Flenar, and Una Kelley. With such support, the return of one experienced man, Thomas Quirk, and a large number of other members, the prospects for the year of 1933-34 look very bright. Twenty-Five

MUSIC DEPARTMENT Glee Club Mary Louise Beardsley Girls' and Boys' glee clubs were united this year into a mixed chorus under the direction of Mr. Robinson. It consists of fourteen girls and four- teen boys. 4 The entire chorus participated in the Berrien County Music Festival held at Dowagiac, December eighth, and a boy's quartet, taken from the chorus, has done quite a bit of outside singing. Mr. Robinson hopes to put on an assembly program using the entire chorus sometime during the present school year. Twenty-five minutes each day, four days in the week, are used for prac- tice. The music has been mostly four part songs of a high type. Band and Orchestra Vivianne E. Wissler This year has been a successful year for the band which consists of thirty-one pieces. The members of the senior class participating in this ac- tivity are: Maurice Aronson, saxaphoneg Lester Beadle, baritoneg Alene Riley, saxaphone and baritoneg Eddie Rolen, bass, Robert Bowers, trum- pet, John Colvin, clarinet, Marion Mitchell, saxaphone, Vivianne Wissler, drum major, clarinet. This fall for the first time since its organization, a band major was added. The band played and paraded for all the home football and basketball games and also for several celebrations. The high school orchestra is composed of thirty-seven members, seven of whi.ch are seniors: Maurice Aronson, Alene Riley, Lester Beadle, Ed- die Rolen, Marian Mitchell, Vivianne Wissler, and Mary Louise Beardsley. This last year the orchestra was asked to play at various dinners and en- tertainments. Under the leadership and capable instruction of Mr. Ralph Robinson, Buchanan High School has turned out an orchestra of which every student may well be proud. Twenty-Seven
