That this idea wasn't removed at an early date by the sophs may be accounted to fate, and probably more to the fact that there was no initiation. The revengeful sophs, how-ever, did not forget and at the Latin Club initiation saw to it that many a Latin-minded freshman learn- ed how to roll a peanut down the corridors of old B. H. S. , At sports the freshies showed true colors. There were eight freshman boys who received awards in football and two who attained the second team squad in basketball. The girls, not to be outdone, also participat- ed in many sports and in volley-ball were proclaimed the tournament champions. In the field of music we were also prominent, having six members in the orchestra, six in the band, and four in Mr. Robinson's selected glee club. As one method of earning money the Freshmen gave a Valentine party. The date set was February 11, but 15 degrees below zero weather not only decided but forced the class to postpone it a week. During this time the class officers, Shirley Rolen, president, Ted Lyon, vice-president, and Dorothy Brown, secretary-treasurer, went around with frantic stares. But everything came out all right, and All's well that ends well is a very fitting senten-ce with which to close a history of first year high. Twenty-Three

SOCIETIES Microphone Staff Marjorie Weaver Our high school paper, the Microphone, appears weekly in the Berrien County Record. This year the journalism class, made up of juniors, seniors, and post graduates, under the direction of Miss Helen Hanlin, acted as the report- ers for the paper. These students collected news from high school, junior high, and grade classes. Special columns included school slants, the inquiring reporter, faculty facts, book reviews, who's who, and sport news. The editor-in-chief for the first semester was Bernice Newsom, a senior, Marjorie Weaver, also a senior, was appointed editor-in-chief the second semester. Since many of this year's staff will return next year, the high school paper should continue to be a success. Velmarian Literary Society Madeline Hamilton The Velmarian Literary Society was organized in 1923 by Mrs. Velma Dunbar, sponsor of this year's society. lt has proved a constant source of ease in public speaking and in stimulating interest in all literary writings. During this year three one-act plays, written and presented by mem- bers of this society, have been considered a great success. The plays, written by Alene Riley, Doris Campbell, and Dee Weaver, abounded in clever originality and variety. We are continuing the sponsorship of a creative writing contest which was inaugurated by last year's society. All high school members are privileged to enter this contest in the essay, the short story, and the poet- ry divisions. Medals will be awarded the contest Winners. Outside judges will render the decisions. Officers this year are: president, Marvin Gross, vice-president, Doris Campbell, secretary, Marjorie Weaver, treasurer, Lee Donleyg literary critic, Marjory Campbell, chairman of programs, Dee Weaver. We feel sure that the future members will do their best to keep up the good standing of the society. Twenty-Four
