Published by the Students of the BUCHANAN HIGH SCHOOL Buchanan, Virginia Foreword We, the Annual Staff of 1942, leave this COLONNADE as a reminder of that por- tion of our lives spent in work and play at Buchanan High School. May this in later years bring back those memories of scenes we shared in our four years; and through this, our Annual, may we recall both the happy and the sad moments with our faculty and friends. Dedication to LOHRING C. STAPLES Principal To express our gratitude for your guidance and for your understanding, We, the Staff of 1942, do dedicate this issue of the COLONNADE 'If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and imbue them with principles and with a just fear of God and love of their fellowmen, we engrave on those tablets something • that will brighten to all eternity!” —WEBSTER Faculty Superintendent Principal Mr. Hunter M. Class History In September of 1939 the Pied Piper blew his flute and from the Grammar School seventy-eight “Rats” came tumbling. All kinds of “Rats” scuttled across the street to seek new quarters in the High School. We, those “Rats”, were tolled into the rooms of Miss Riley and Mr. Kranke. We have scrambled madly through the halls, have been ordered around by the principal, have been run over by the upper classmen, and caught in many traps set by the faculty. But in spite of all these dangers, there are now forty-six survivors. By our Sophomore year our number had dropped to sixty-four. By then we felt more capable to take part in school activities. As our Junior year rolled around, we found that our greatest problem was the Junior-Senior Entertainment. Early in the spring we started preparation for the gala event. We chose the theme, “A Trip Around The World”. It ended in a dance with the Seniors. In 1942 forty-six Seniors are looking forward to commencement ex- ercises. Thus ends the gay and colorful high school careers of the “Rats” of ’39. Class Prophecy Just as the class prophets for a hundred years have done, I, too, have had a dream of what my classmates will be doing in the future. “So listen my children and you will hear of many things that will soon appear.” Prize Fighting: Our class sure turned out one first class prize fighter, Dennis Booze. He received several broken bones, a mashed mouth and other minor injuries in a match with a youngster. I turned on the radio yesterday and what did I hear but, “Your sta- tion S. 0. T. Rabbit Run, Harold Carter announcing.” Who would have thought it? And listen: E. J. Craft is now Instructor of Music at Yale University and his assistant is Jack Fitzgerald, and I almost forgot, Eldridge Mar- shall is another assistant. Lester Hodges, I’ve been told, is a successful farmer, and William Lawless is his Foreman. Chan Mabry, who is a typist in New York, is at home on a short visit. He makes a striking appearance in his well cut clothes. We remember J. P. Shorter as a woman hater. He recently gave up his freedom by saying, “I do.” Russel Smith is a budding novelist and is regarded by many critics as the Dickens of modern times. The airplane industry claims Joseph Spangler. He has just made a spectacular flight from Earth to Mars. We thought Junious St. Clair would never pass the course, but now he has a play om Broadway: “My Kingdom For A Horse”. Vandai- Wallace who played basketball at Buchanan, is now with the Celtic team and charms all the ladies. Doris Booth is a dress designer and Mae Wells, the famous model, is working for her. The last we heard of Beatrice Booze, she was declared tennis cham- pion of America. Evelyn Caldwell is the only well known woman architect in America. Dorothy Camper is also outstanding in that field and they both have of- fices in Speck, Virginia and are bitter rivals in the business. Sue DeVilbiss, who is now Eldridge’s spouse, is busy reading their children stories about Mickey Mouse. Pearl Falls is now taking care of refugees from the earthquake in Thati. Juanita Goode, that sweet voiced charmer, was recently married to a prosperous farmer. Margaret Harlow, the girl with the sweet disposition, is now pulling rabbits from a hat—a lady magician. Inus King, who was such a studious lass, is now making every effort in college to pass. I met up with a “tar heel” the other day and found out that Armis- tice Lemon is teaching Home Economics in North Carolina. One day not long ago, I dropped in at the U. S. Patent Office and there I saw Mary Lankenhoker at a piano. She is employed as a tune de- tector. Ethel Lugar is now in Washington supervising Social Service Activ- ities for the President. And wait, there was Mariam Manspile, where is she now? Yes, I remember, she is the famous basketball coach for Columbia University. Ruby Manspile is a famous young lawyer. Her latest case was de- fending the accused assassinator of the Governor of Virginia. Eleanor Markham has recently completed the decoration of Doris Marshall’s mansion in Beverly Hills. Rebecca McClelland is now quite a settled young “farmerette”. Remember Iris Mowles who giggled all the day? She is giggling for the movies now and gets plenty of pay. Juanita O’Connor is in a musical comedy, now, and quite a scream. Mary Perry, ever an industrious soul, patiently teaches Kangaroos to bowl. Isabelle Ransone is married to the Head of Michigan’s Tourist Bu- reau. One of our number, Agnes Reynolds, has followed in the footsteps of Edna St. Vincent Millay to become a famous poet. Irene Ruble is now modeling dresses for the Junior Department of Miller and Rhodes. Mary Spangler is doing Stenographic work for her future husband. Nell Stinnett, who a teacher wished to be, is now married and raising children three. Kathryn Stinett, the girl with the pretty brown eyes, is meeting Thursday afternoons with the “Circle of Young Wives”. Marie Thorn, the girl with the light brown hair, is now doing a skit in the Vanity Fair. Cornelia Vassar leads the list of America’s first ten in athletics and amateur sports. Nancy Walker is now star reporter for the Atlanta Journal. Hilda Welch, that blond haired girl, is now earning a living by mak- ing hair curl. The industrious Home Economics student, Mae Wells, now owns a shop famous for its baking. Nancy Wickline is making political speeches in behalf of Hazel Wright, who is running for Mayor of Buchanan on the Goldigger’s ticket. You see the years have treated us well, and so we bid you a fond fare- well.
