I was too young for love or even full apprecnatlon of hxs qualmes I could only gaze rn admxrauon. He reminded me of a young Indxan brave destmed to be the cluef of his tube Sunburned, supple handsome not too tall-the perfect athlete He seemed to stand out among all my brothers frxends and classmates I used to watch them what seemed to me an endless and brutal playfulness They wrestled Ln a manner that makes me wonder why one of them wasnt krlled Sometunes xt was two agaxnst two, sometimes just one and one But my hero never gave m no matter rf ten jumped on lum and msxsted on gwe up Not once drd he gxve up but would sooner h ve dxed than sqy he was beaten The summer rolled on Once hrs sarlboad turned over and one of the occupants a gxrl couldnt swim The wmd llxpped the sarl over flat on the water leavlng the cllngmg group under If half drowned from 1ts pressure He rescued them He dxved down again and agam unul he had unstepped the mast He encounaged them to clmg on paddled vxolently on one stde of the boat towards shore and perhaps saved thexr hves Three or four years passed andI was begummg to realize hrs qualmes of all the boys he had become a man to me He could alwqys take care of hxmself but only when he had first thought of others My hero had become more fearless 1n these few years or should I say less reckless and more courageous I remember one day we took turns at bexng towed behmd the motor boat on the end of a long rope It seemed to! be great fun The boat would go so fast dhat the person on the end of the rope would be dragged under the water and when he could hold his breath no longer hed just let go Bux one tune, when rt was my henos turn apparently the rope became tw1sted around hrs wnsts and he couldnlt let go The boat seemed to go on mdefmrtely It was long eno fbr anyone to drown I'Ie was under water for an unbelievable length of tune but fortunately the motor stalled. He came to the surface and I could see he was almost gone But m a moment he had revxved and no one knew of hrs narrow escape except me He never told He never gave up Icould go on wmth canoe races rn whxch because he had a bad canoe because of hrs paddles and hrs comparuons he was outclassed and outmatched from the start and yet he fou t lske a dog strax t to the very end A bad start never d1SC0lll'Zg8d hun he never gave up and often came m lengths ahead In tennrs xt was the same He was all over the court when hrs partner needed support and even the mediocre seemed to take on h1s courage and hls deternunatlon to wm It used to worry me so when mby brother would tell of how they would gang up on hxm at school to make hlm say Im llcked Im through There were perhaps half a dozen after hxm at once usmg all the thoughtless dangerous methods of school boys determ med to wm thexr pomt But he never sa1d Im through He graduated from school and then went to college and one summer he worked ln the lron mxnes amongst the mmers of the iron range country The bully of the camp undoubtedly an expert boxer declded a boxing match fwould be fun and somehow my heno was selected as the opponent H was not an experlened boxer by any means but he fearlessly tackled the bully In the thrrd round my hero came out with hls jaw broken but this wouldn t stop htm He had to l1 k that bully and the fourth round drd II He beat the bully all rlght No he couldnt and wouldn t give up And so nt went unnl the war came along He was stlll at college but he enllsred m the Arr Corps OE he went to Texas and before long he was commlssloned Tl '1 h was sent overseas We got frequent reports that he was U1 ra1ds over France Holland and Germany I'Ie always came back for he was skxllful and courageous to the dare dev1l pomt No German plane would ever dxstract htm from hxs objectwe So often his frlends would tell me that hed always come back He had married just before he went overseas and LU one of hls letters to hrs wxfe he wrote 'If you ever hear Im mlssmg or lost or dead dont worry Ill be back I belreved every word of xt He was mdestructlble It would be a sm for a man lrke that to be lost 25 - S 5 . , ' , . y - . . 111 ' , . . . . Then m july, 1943 hu squadron was ordered to bomb a German axrport in Holland As my hero had been appointed squadron commander his plane was rn the lead, and the fxrst over the enemy au held Enemy planes concentranng on the leader shot one of the engmes out of commxssron U1 the light. Three German fighter planes saw their chance As they approached, my hero and hu crew got two of the attackers and began to crrcle slowly towards the Brmsh Channel bopmg to make England One enemy plane snll clung on It obvxously had the advantage over the dxsabled bomber just as they were over the channel, the bomber Bred, making a telhng hrt on the German attacker but not before the German plane also made a tellmg Int on the bomber Both planes plunged mto the channel at terrdic speed There were a number of wztnesses Both planes chs appeared below the surface There appeared to be no survnvors. A11 were lost, erther by gun wounds or Impact wxth the water My hero was gone I thought of the efforts he must have made to free his mates and himself I remembered the length of time he stayed under the water w1th that rope around his wnst: I remembered hu many dsves under water to unstep the mast when the saxlboat turned over I remembered that he had never grven up had never sand Im through Im hcked. It was no surprise to me when the report came from the Red Cross One survxvor reported, commg to the surface and slowly and paxnfully swzmmrng ashore He made lt-on the shores of the devasted German occupxed but sympathenc Holland The report went on to say that he had dred of wounds on reachmg shore Iwonder He never sand, 'Im through-Im lrcked Had he been taken away some fnendly Hollanders?
