Gaining experience as the season drew to a close, the Owls made it to the semi-finals in the E. I. B. L. playoffs. They beat Mon- mouth in the first game but were then overpowered by Hartford City. The only Senior leaving the team will be Dave Bergman, so chances of a winning season are evident. 47 Cross-Country ■If. itB? BJL El The above group made up our cross country squad. The boys in uniforms won the Pennville Invitational for us led by Steve Fennig. The prospects for this team next year looks very bright, since the only Seniors lost were Dave Bergman and Keith Huey. Steve Fennig was our outstanding runner turning in his fastest time of 9:56 in the County meet. Bryant finished second in the County, losing a close meet by three points. A special note of gratitude is given to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Grogg for letting us boys practice on their farm. 48 Zrack tbimmmmmmmismaBA The Bryant Owls again ended a very prosperous track season by -winning the county meet. For the Owls this was the seventh consecutive county championship. Our team turned in an impressive record at the finish of the season, winning ten of their eleven meets. The only one we lost was a three-way meet in which we placed second. In the county meet, we won seven out of the fourteen first places. Dwain Michael was our top individual winning three events and running also in the half-mile relay team. Ray Shultz, Dave Laux, and Terry Masters were Bryant ' s only other individual win- ners in this county meet. The final score for the 1966 County meet was: Bryant Madison Redkey Dunkirk Pennville 77-3 4 47-3 4 47-3 4 29 21-3 4 49 Cheerleaders Jennie Bellis Junior Jeanne Glassford Sophomore 50 Varsity STANDING: Coach, Mr. Wallace; Jim Schoenlein, Jon Campbell, Gary Foltz, Mike Moore, Mark Hous- er, Jim Minch. The senior class of 67 not being the greatest class ever! !!!!!! ■ ' • We Predict Mr. Wayne Haffner has just returned from a world tour. As we join him, Mrs. Scholar has just asked what he saw on his bachelor ' s fling , and he is telling her about all the graduates of ' 67 he had seen recently, thirteen years later. Before starting on my trip, I decided that I needed a new car. I had planned t j get another Dodge, but when I arrived at Fort Wayne I found that there were no Doc dealers aroun d at all. Neither could I find any of the other well-known dealers. T only advertisements I saw were about the Geomar Car , so I decided to stop in at Geomar dealer. He told me that this car was developed by two men from here in t Midwest, GEORGE BOICE and MARION DAILEY. This car was so much more powerful, comfortable and inexpensive to operate than the others that it had driven other dealers out of business. On the way home, I passed the new rest home, Happy Park, along highway 27. I saw the home ' s head nurse, CHERYL GETTINGER. After reminiscing about old times at Bryant, I began to feel hungry so I left to find a good restaurant. A huge flashing neon sign caught my eye. Bright lights spelled out Nona ' s Nook - Good Food. I wondered if this could be OUR Nona, so I went inside. Once inside, I saw a sign which read The Home of the Boss of the Year . I knew imme diately that this was our NONA. She saw me and rushed over to my table. She mentioned that her award was won because of her consideration of her employees when needing time off. After a good meal, I resumed my journey home. However, just before I got into Berne, I noticed a tall tower along the highway. It resembled a forest ranger ' tower, and since there were no forests around, I stopped to inquire about it. The tower was so tall and I was trying to see who was in the observation room when I realized that I wasn ' t watching where I was going for I had just run into the base of the tower. Someone came running down the steps shouting, Help! ! ! There has been an earthquake! To my surprise, it was LEE FENNIG. I explained what had happened and apologized for running into his tower. Then I asked him what was its purpose. He told me that after his previous experience with tornadoes he felt that Berne should have someone to warn them of the impending disaster. I left with the confident feeling that Berne would never again be taken by surprise. The car wasn ' t badly damaged, but I felt I should get it checked before driving far. So I stopped at the first garage I saw. I don ' t think anyone could help but see it because it covered an entire block and was five stories high. As soon as I drove the car in, a grease jockey came running up calling out, Hi, Wayne . After a second look, I saw that it was really MARGARET (CHOWNING) HUMMEL. She told me, I became so interested in cars that I now come in occasionally jus t to help out. You knew that Herb owns this garage, didn ' t you? She checked the car then she assured me that it could make the trip. I started to pay her but she refus it saying, It was worth it to see you again, Wayne . I thanked her, then I started out again for home. En route home I was taken back by the scene that presented itself directly before me, for a ship was knocking out the bridge over the Wabash. When the captain rushed out onto the deck, I was surprised to see that it was RANDY LOY. He shouted down Sorry, Wayne and returned to the bridge. Although this made me detour several miles, it was good to see Randy doing so well. I decided that I should practice my surfing in California before trying the big surfs of Australia during my world tour. While in California, I saw a woman that was driving down the sidewalk in her Volkswagen. I stopped her to find out where I co uld get a good haircut, and I met none other than our own LINDA REITZ who was on her way to Sunset Strip to lead protest march against work. She told me of Pinky ' s Parlor , which was just around the corner. As I stepped in, I saw LEAANN PINGRY applying an electric 80 shock to Phyllis Diller ' s hair. While sitting in the chair, I heard a familiar voice on the radio. LeaAnn told me that the song was an excerpt from KEITH HUEY ' s pest selling album, Songs I Learned from Boys ' State . After a hard day of surfing, I decided I needed a change of pace, so I stopped in at a swinging nite club called Hoffman ' s Hideaway . While inside, I saw ERNIE MILLER, who was working as the bartender. Before I got the opportunity to talk with him, I saw a familiar face. It was Glassford of the Nile , who formerly was Ijust plain SHARON GLASSFORD. I sat down at one of the tables to get a better look at the performer, and I heard a voice over my shoulder say, Isn ' t she Great? When I turned around, I saw the proprietor, DANNY HOFFMAN, another Bryant grad. A few days later, after mastering surfing, I began heading East. My first stop was in Washington D. C. While in Washington, I stopped in at the Internal Revenue Bureau, at their request. I was led down a long corridor and into a room with a red carpet. Someone gave a sinister chuckle and said, It ' s awfully nice to see you here, Wayne . I was greatly relieved to see ROGER RITTENHOUSE step out of the shadows. He consoled me with the explanation that his reason for calling me was nothing more than wanting to visit. I asked him how he liked being the chief tax collector. He told me that this job of collecting the taxes wasn ' t half as hard as the one he had tackled in high school, trying to get the Seniors to pay their dues. While in the office, Roger reminded me that a new cabinet office had been formed. It was given the name, Department of Human Relations. Roger told me that a graduate of ' 67, FRED TWIGG, had just been appointed as the Secretary of the Department. While I was in the East, I decided to stop in at Annapolis and find out who Randy ' s navigation instructor was. While wandering about the campus, I happened to see one of the boys ' Phys. Ed. classes with their instructor, THERESA WELSCH, who was putting them through their paces. I was just about to go over and talk with her, when I saw smoke billowing out one of the windows. I noticed that no one was getting too excited, so I asked what was going on. They explained that it was just one of their new Home Economic teacher ' s cooking classes. I was amazed to find out that this teacher was PATTY SCHMIT. I stayed in Maryland that night, and the next day drove on to New York. Before I left New York, I wanted to buy a gift for one of my ol ' d friends. I had heard about a sale of cigars at Macy ' s, so I went there and on the fifth floor I found JANELLE STAUFFER behind a big display of Dutch Master cigars. I asked Janelle if they were very good. She assured me that they were the best on the market. I know because I have tried almost every other brand , she said. Just around the corner was a book store so I went in and browsed around for a book to read on the plane. There was a separate table of the best selling book, How I Overcame My Teen-Age Love Problems . I picked it up and DAVE BERG- MAN written in big gold letters caught my eye. I bought it because I knew that the author had had plenty of experiences to write about. The next time I heard about a Bryant graduate, I was in England. I was walk- ing down Carnaby street in my new Mod outfit, when I heard a newspaper boy calling, Extra, Extra, Read All About It. America ' s first lady in space . This interested me so I bought a paper. The headline that caught my eye read, PATTY HAY DEN and JUNE ILIFF - the only woman team at a men-ed space station . I was very happy to see that Patty and June were working in an environ- ment they enjoyed. While traveling through the Far East, my plane was grounded in North Vietnam. I was escorted to the United States Embassy where I met our Ambassador, KAREN GOINS. She told me that she had revised her plans because she hadn ' t been able to master Chinese or Russian. She also told me of another one of her classmates, MARK HOUSER. He was stationed in South Vietnam and had just won a medal for being the most physically fit of all the men in the Chaplin Corps. She said that he attributed his good conditioning to his nightly exercise of chasing WACS. While sitting in Karen ' s office, I realized that I had seen all of the ' 67 class q. Continued on page 84 82 We Predict students except JOHN LAUX, PATTY HERMAN, and ANN BROCKWAY. I also decided that my trip would not be complete without mountain climbing in the Himalayas. So I left Vietnam and set off for Tibet. I wanted a real challenge, so I asked the guide to choose a formerly uncon- j quered peak. However, when we reached the top, we found a house with John andl Patty living there. Their only servant was a Governess, Ann Brockway. Well, Mrs. Scholar, it seems as if the class of 1967 has done all right for itself. It isn ' t surprising since they decided Not merely to exist, but to accomplish . Mark Houser and Karen Goins 84 Class Poem Now the time has come, [For us to say adieu, But please, before we go, May we present us to you. First is Janelle, who loves to have fun, And her parties never get out of hand, But still there ' s one thing you should know, You have to bring your own rubber band. Next in line and headed for fame, A guy who is really sweet, Roger Rittenhouse is his name. He ' s a guy who ' s hard to beat. And next is June Iliff Who couldn ' t stay away forever, Has come back to Bryant Just as ornery as ever. If he ' s in a big red Mercury And he ' s acting like a clown, Then everyone knows Keith Huey ' s in town. From way down South Where the bananas grow Came our Karen Goins Whom we all now know. Especially Mark Houser Who can fly like an eagle On his way out to Karen ' s It ' s really illegal. Who ' s the wise-cracker in our class No doubt you all can guess In a group she causes a riot Yes, Linda Reitz is never quiet. Which brings us to Pat Hayden Mostly the quiet, shy type But her friendly smile treats us all And you ' ll never hear from her a gripe. Another girl who ' s in our class Who ' s real quick and snappy Is our Sharon Glassford Who could make any boy happy. For a guy who lives in the country Danny Hoffman is Mr. Defiant I wonder -why we see him a lot In the north end of Bryant. Marion Dailey and his Ford Is a combination that we all know Wow, he sure can make those tires spin As long as there ' s lots of snow. And next comes Ernie Miller Into who ' s future we ' ll peek Yep, there ' s our Ernie Trying success to seek. We haven ' t forgotten Cheryl Gettinger Who wants to become a nurse Maybe someday she ' ll move to Africa And learn a Witch Doctor ' s curse. George Boice is our mechanic Knows all about stroked and bored Maybe someday he ' ll build a great car But for now it ' s a flat head Ford. Who ' s always talking to some boy A blonde hair blue eyed lass No doubt someday she ' ll make her catch It ' s Patti Schmit who ' s in our class. Now here ' s a guy tall and slim And in Ohio you ' ll usually find him For all the girls he opens the door As you can see, Lee Fennig ' s no bore. A great statesman once said, Go West young man That was his wish and not an order But still Fred Twigg has never made it Much more than a mile and a quarter. Who ' s always having open house And a lot of visitors they say No doubt it must be LeaAnn Pingry Who takes what you say the wrong way. Another new arrival this year Has brought us plenty of cheer Bryant ' s gain is Madison ' s loss I bet Marg shows Herb who ' s boss. John Laux and Patty Herman A couple who ' s always together I guess it ' s like the saying goes They ' re two birds of a feather . Who ' s the young girl That helps Mrs. Scholar It ' s none other than Ann Brockway That Bookkeeping scholar. Randy is what we call him But Randy Loy is his name A real good sport in everything We hope he ' ll always stay the same. This person is one in a million And a good name she ' s got Theresa Rose Welsch is the name The question is, a million what? We, the editors of this annual, Would like to thank one person Writing this poem is no easy job We ' ll bet Dave did a lot of cur sin ' Maybe this isn ' t so funny But it ' s all so true It really means a lot to us I hope you enjoyed it too.
