There were six teams in our division and we ended up in third place. This got us ready for the county league. In the county league we ended up with 8 wins and 2 losses which earned us second place in the league. The seniors lost from the team are: Dwight Michael, Larry Orr, Dennis Link, and Bill Moore. w -29 - Zmck 1962 % rjHrj Bryant ' s track team did very well last spring. Because of their hard work and desire, they again won the County track meet at Dunkirk. Most of the track meets were held at Adams Central last year. The team didn fare too well at these meets. But Danny Montgomery and Earl Hayden would usually get us some first places. We also had a few meets at Geneva. At these meets we usually won or were second. One of the meets, which pleased our coach, Mr. Harris, was at Dunkirk. In a triangular, three-team meet, Bryant came out on top, beating Dunkirk and Farmland. This also made the boys very happy. During the last part of school the count) meet was held at Dunkirk. Bryant placed first in many events. Some of them were the 100 yard dash, the 22i yard dash, the broad jump, the mile relay, and the half-mile relay. We also picked up important points on second and third places. The meet was very close till the end when our mile and half-mile relay teams won both of their races. Our team hopes to take the county track trophy again this year. We have many fine runners back again this year and some other boys that didn ' t participate last year. Some of the boys to watch: Seniors - Larry Orr Les Hayden, Bill Moore, and Dwight Michael; Juniors - Kenny Keller, John Garlinger, and Don Minch; Sopho- mores - Joe Huey, Don Shoemaker, John Hoffman, and Mike Ninde; Freshmen - Ray Shultz, Larry Boice, and Dwain Michael. These boys appeared to be good prospects last year, but we will also have other good runners not mentioned. 30 Cross Country Kneeling- Ray Schultz, Ernie F if er, Tom Laux, Tom Muhlenkamp, and Les Hayden. Standing- Don Shoemaker, John Hoffm.an, Ed Garlinger, Don Snow, Larry Boice, and Earl Hayden. The Cross Country Team represented our school in fine form this season. They had a bad break by loosing Earl Hayden from the team but still did very well. The team, which was made up mostly of underclassmen, placed in the top group in the county. They didn ' t win first, but for the first time Bryant had the first and second place individuals. Ray Schultz, a freshman, and Les Hayden, a senior, placed first and second, respectively. Although the team looses seniors Les Hayden and Ed Garlinger they should have a very successful season next year. The picture at the right is of Ray Schultz coming in first in the County Meet. With some extra practice they tied their county competitors for first place in the District Contest. This gave them the chance to participate in the State Contest at the State Fair. They practiced very hard all summer. At the State the team took ninth place. With all the members back this year, they hope to try to better their record. The members of all judging teams and our school ought to thank our coach Mr. Haffner for the time and effort he gives these boys. The Livestock Judging Teams did very well in the County Contest this year. They won both first and second place and therefore won the right for both teams to participate in the District Con- test. They didn ' t have quite the same luck there, unfortunately. You had to be either first or second in the District to get to go to the State. ■51 School Mig ft lights Fish Fry Professional Dancers 52 Cafeteria amtor j us Dtims We all ought to be proud of the job out janitor, Tom Hoehammer, does. He keeps our school in tip top shape, and uys to keep us warm in winter. Most of the students see one of these smiling faces each morning as they brave rain and snow to bring us all to school. BONIFAS HARDWARE Bryant, Indiana 53- Class Prophecy 1973 THIS IS YOUR LIFE, CLASS OF 1963 Journeying across the country, looking up our old high school classmates, we first find in the Eastern States, Dennis Dink Link as business manager of Macy ' s Department Store. We heard that the store was doing very well since Dink became manager. But he modestly tells us that this is due to the efficiency of his secretary, Lorene Armantrout. She said she has been kept extremely busy with the arrangement of the annual Macy ' s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which officially opens the Christmas Season. The new proprietor of the fantastic Peppermint Lounge in New York City is Les Hayden. We thought we would go in to see Les, but the crowd was too large. Later, Les came out to talk to us. He told us he bought the Lounge about two years ago; and he must be doing fine because he said he has a new home, also a yacht, and a four-passenger plane. While walking down the street, we notice this huge poster. On it was a picture of our old classmate, Barbara Orr, who is now the World ' s Champion Lady Wrestler. She is appearing at Madison Square Gardens. We plan to see the exhibition match tonight. Good luck, Barb. We visited the White House and found Dorwin Starr, who is the fashion designer to the First Lady. He told us that he has designed a fabulous new wardrobe for her coming trip to Europe. Dorwin wanted us to be sure to stop downstairs to see Connie Koon. She is the chauffeur to the President. She drives his 1974 Cadillac, and, man, does she rod that thing. You ought to see all those patches around the Capitol building. Esther Muhlenkamp is also well-known in Washington, since she is serving as Ambassa- dor to Russia. I think she is making progress there; at least they now have a two-party system. She has been in the U. S. S. R. for the past several weeks on a good- will tour. Marlene Goss, now married to Chancey Sipe, is teaching the third grade at Washington, D. C, West Elementary. She teaches the children of the Congressmen ' s families. Boy, are they getting brainy. We ran into Judy Reitz as she was leaving the Smithsonian Institute. She said she is doing work in Paleonthology; which is the branch of Geology dealing with the study of fossils. She has made some very important contributions to the prehistoric science world. Her discoveries include bones and fossils of dinosaurs. Many museums, especially the Smithsonian, are anxious to obtain her findings. In the Middle West States, we find Kathy Luedeke and Marjorie Mushie Lindsey, who are co-owners of the K M Cigarette Factory. We thought it was very foggy around the vicinity, and when we ran into them, we understood why. We ' d better leave right quick, because they are having a nicotine fit. On through Illinois, in Chicago, we come upon a man buzzing around the Loop on a .motorcycle--in fact, he almost ran over us. You probably have guessed who it was--Douglas Saxman. We later met him in a restaurant for dinner, and he surprised us by saying he is Presi- dent of the National Motorcycle Safe Driving Association having a large membership of over three thousand. Also in Chicago is Elenore Vorhees, now a very successful marriage counselor, although she has had three failures of her own. She mentioned that she has just remarried, but she won ' t tell us to whom. We suspect that he is some noted Chicago lawyer. Donna Laux, who is married to Richard Haffner, is living in Colorado. They own the R D Horse Ranch. This is the home of the world famous white stallion, Charlie, winner of many trophies and awards throughout the country. 54 In the Far West States, we come across Jack Caster in Nevada. He is the owner and operator of the Caster Uranium Plantation. He is very wealthy, and owns a large mansion and two Cadillacs. One of his favorite recreation spots is Las Vegas. I guess he keeps his money in circulation that way. In the neighboring state of California, one of the former Bryant Owls, Larry Orr is head basketball coach at U. C. L. A. He married his high school sweetheart. Alice Wall, and they now have a darling set of twin girls. After games, Alice is hostess to the ball players, cheer- leaders, and guests. Their home is very well suited for parties since they have a swimming pool and other types of recreational enjoyments. Also in the Sunshine State is Eddie Garlinger. He is being kept busy with his campaign, as he is now running for Governor. He married a very rich old lady and she is financially help- ing him with his campaign. It will be an exciting gubernatorial race as his running mate is Steve Chrisman. 1 am sure all the old Bryant friends will be keeping a close watch on this election. Previous to Steve ' s decision to run for Governor, he was a very successful lawyer in Los Angeles. In the state of Washington, Wanda Kraner is owner of a one-hundred acre apple orchard. She employs over eight hundred workers who pick, sort, and ship the fruit to various well-known restaurants and super markets all over the country. In our largest state. Alaska, we discover that Bill Lawrence and Bill Moore are co-owners of the Bill Bill Trading Post. They are very popular among the Eskimos. In fact, when we entered the trading post, we caught them rubbing noses with two Eskimo girls. On the Pacific island of Hawaii, we learn that Dwight Michael is married to a high school underclassman. He is head of the Wiggle, Wiggle Hula Dance School. The Hula is as popular as the Twist is on the mainland. He has a waiting list of six hundred to be enrolled in the dance school. Earl Hayden is a pearl diver on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. When we saw him. he gave us each a pearl ring as a souvenir. He also holds the world ' s record of staying underwater when diving without commercial diving equipment. While shopping in Honolulu ' s department stores, we bought cosmetics with the famous Nancy label on them. We looked into the matter and learned that Nancy (Arnold) Dull is the originator of these products. We tried her cosmetics, incidentally, and they are very recommend- This brings our trip to an end. A superior rating is the highest that is given, excellent is second. 57 Sherlyn Caster won a superior rating at the District Music Contest on her Bell -Lyra. She also received a superior rating at the State Contest. The boys pictured above composed Bryant ' s Dairy Judging Team. They won first place in the District last spring and won the right to compete in the State Contest. At the State Contest they placed ninth, which is very good. Dorwin Starr, theY.F.C. Pres- ident, proudly displays the at- tendance trophy that the club has won at the rallies at Bernea The picture above was taken after the Second Team Tourney at Pleasant Mills. Bryant won the morning game with Pleasant Mills and squeaked through their afternoon game with Decatur Catholic to win the Championship. Pictured above is Mr. Cardin ' s 5th and 6th basketball team of last year. His team had a very good season and they also won the Invitational Tournarrient, which they held. -58- W ' NOT AVAILABLE Listed below are other students who have gained a place in our Parade of Champs section but who ' s pictures were not available. Bryant again this year had something new happen. Our Second Team won the Second Team County Tourney. This is the first time Bryant has ever won it. Besides that the team has a very successful season behind it. At times the team played very good basketball for a Second Team. In the line of music, we had another st udent receive a superior rating at the District Music Contest. Her name was Crystal King. At the State Contest she also played her piano solo very nicely and received a high superior rating. Also most of the members of our high school band took part in the District Contest but not in solos but in ensembles. Many of them received excellent ratings, which is very good. Another superior rating at the District Contest was taken by Janice and Janelle Stauffer in their clarinet and flute duet. Because of Janelle ' s age, they did not participate in the State Contest. Last in our spotlight of winners are the senior boys who received honor jackets. This was a great thrill to the boys to receive these. Earl Hayden won his jacket in track and cross country. Les Hayden won his in track and cross country. Eddie Garlinger won his jacket in baseball and basketball. Bill Moore won his in track, baseball, and basketball. Larry Orr won his in track, baseball, and basketball. Dennis Link won his jacket in baseball and basket- ball. Dwight Michael won his in track, baseball, and basketball. You will probably see these boys proudly wearing their jackets around school. To the Reader: We,, the Seniors of 1963, hope you have enjoyed our Annual. Do not stop here but go on and read the advertisements of the people who made this annual possible. Thank You. 59 Class Poem Our goal has been reached, Graduation is near. We ' ve written a poem, And we ' ll start it here: Coming first is a girl we wouldn ' t want to miss, Lorene Armantrout is the name on our list; She ' s about 5 ft. 2 and her eyes are brown, We often see her heading toward Portland town. Next in line is Nancy Arnold, A real sweet gal whose always on the ball. Of course, she ' s always thinking of. That special guy named Dull. Elenore Vorhees goes walking by, Can you guess what ' s on her mind? Mike Cain, of course, it is. He really leaves her in a tiz! Here comes a guy who is a bit shy. Dark brown hair with a twinkle in his eye; He makes all the girls sit up and sigh, As he, Steve Chrisman, goes roddin ' by. Marlene Goss, a real sweet girl, Knows how to keep that Chancey in a whirl. We from the class extend our best wishes. And hope that she may stay ambitious. Now there ' s Eddie Garlinger, For whom all the fans scream. He ' s a mighty valuable man. On the Owls Basketball Team. Earl Hayden, often seen with a smile. Is Bryant ' s best man to run the mile. A real nice guy in the Senior Class, In Civics, he ' s really quite fast. Coming up is Dorwin Starr, Our bass-drummer in the band; But when it comes to flower arrangements. He ' s the best man in the land. Then there ' s Larry Orr whose shots are great. On Bryant ' s team he really rates. A bit quiet, but never -the -less mild, Alice Jeane sure makes him smile. Alice Wall, a cheerleader in our grade. Has a smile that ' s really great. Pert and pretty, a blond in our class. She really makes Larry ' s heart beat fast. I Wanda Kraner, next on our list, Is really kept busy at Phillips 66; She goes with a guy whose name is Clyde; He really makes that Wanda sigh. Then there is Doug Saxman Whose voice is really loud . You can recognize him. In almost every crowd. Of course, here comes Connie Koon, Who really makes her Plymouth fly; Connie, we find is usually busy. Filling her time at Surplus City. Next in line comes Judy Reitz, A real cute gal and very bright. There ' s a guy who thinks - - SOME DAJv It ' s none other than Good ole Wayne. Here comes Kathy Luedeke, Looking real keen. Her future is already planned. With that guy named Gene. A toast to Dwight Michael, Our editor of the annual; May he be congratulated. By the staff he had to handle. Bill Lawrence is coming up next, His many experiences could fill a text. He handles a car with a lot of skill. And really starts to live behind the wheel. Margie Lindsey, whom we call Mushie, Is the life of a crowd and a joy to us. She ' s a gal who ' s really neat, And has a disposition which we call sweet Another boy who is rather bold. But a real nice guy I ' ve been told, His goal is to go out West, It ' s Bill Moore, never -the -less. Next comes Les Hayden, A quiet boy in our class. We are almost certain. He has his eye on some cute lass. Barbara Orr, tall and slim. Is always on the go; But when it comes to style and class. She ' s really In The Know. I 60 There ' s a guy who came from Trinity, His name is Dennis Link, but is known as Dink; Being quite smart and always full of fun, In the school halls he ' s always on the run. A familiar figure coming down the hall, A smile lights his face and he ' s not real tall; I ' m sure in his future he will reach much fame, You ' ve probably guessed by now Jack Caster is his name. Last, but not least, comes Esther Muhlenkamp and Donna Laux, The authors of this mess. When thinking of Eddie and Richard, Their minds are never at rest. 61 Senior Autographs 10 ,)0 f O ' -j (A _y 62- Advertising Quality and Service You Can Depend On P.O.
