BROAD MINDS Class History We entered Bryant High School in S-eptember in the fall of '41 with 27 mem- bers in our class. Jene Wendel, Delbert Flesher, Bobby Scott and Bob Davidson were new. We were rather shy. The following officers were elected: President. Fred Haffnerg Vice President. Dora Dean Shrider: Secretary and Treasurer, Joe Arnold. Wanda Pyle represented our class in the Queen contest winning third place. Our sponsor was Miss Violet' Funk. We enjoyed many parties and of course some of the freshmen boys were initiated. Joe Arnold left us to go to Portland and Betty Morgan came to us from Pennville in the latter part of the year. In the fall of '42 most of us returned to be sophomores. With 25 members, Junior Butcher and Arthur Huey failed to return. We werent quite so shy this year, as our teachers soon found out. We elected the following officers: President, Jimmy Miller: Vice President, Delbert Flesher: Secretary and Treasurer, Bill Orr. Our sponsor was Mr. Lee Glentzer. We enjoyed several parties. Mary Harden and Nelda Iliff dropped out during the year. Again we came back to our school rooms in the fall of '43, to find that only 20 members returned. Now classified as juniors we felt fairly sure of ourselves. Just to think only one more year and we would be seniors! Jimmy Miller went to Portland to school, and Bob Scott and Dora Dean Shrider dropped out. We electcd the following officers: President, Royce Wright: Vice President, Keith Gill- espieg Secretary and Treasurer, Delbert Flesher. Our sponsor, and also director of our play, was Mr. Donald Deaton. The name of the play which we gave was, They Gave Him a Co-Ed. The proceeds went to finance the Junior and Senior Reception. Hazel Pyle represented our class as queen in the Queen contest by taking first place. We also had several parties all of which we enjoyed. Duane Dickson from Penn- ville joined us in the second semester. As we returned as seniors we began to realize our place in the world, There were 21 of us, but Marvin Towell soon left us to join Uncle Sam's Navy. Hazel Pyle was elected President: Dorothy Frank, Vice President: Eugene Dynes, Secre- tary and Treasurer. Mr. Wayne Haffner was chosen as our sponsor. We presented the play, Arn I lntruding? under the direction of Mr. C. E. Beck. Virginia Upty- graft represented our class in the Queen contest taking second place. A few parties were held which we enjoyed. Now we leave you to go out into the world. Some of us have gone all twelve years together. Some may go to college. Others may get married. Many may be called into Uncle Sam's fighting forces. M. Fashion shop on Fifth Avenue, and take a trip over the week-end. After packing our overnight bags we started out in our Piper Cub for England. .5 We arrived at the estate of Mr, and Mrs. Chester Knight. Mrs. Knight was the former Miss Betty Morgan. We found Betty in the best of health and very happy with her husband and three children. In the morning we started back to the United States and stopped at a small island in the Atlantic and found Bob Davidson was the owner. He farmed the entire island by push button so that he could get his needed rest. Since we had not seen our friends in the middle west for a while, we flew on to Detroit. We visited Delbert Flesher's flower shop and undertaking establish- ment, and ran across Betty Jean Smith. She said she had married a famous band leader and they had just returned from Hollywood where he had played in a movie, Heavcnly Hideaway, co-starring Virginia Craig and Rosco Hayworth. Betty Jean was buying flowers to send to Virginia Uptygraft, Republican candidate for president of 1956. Miss Uptygraft was resting up at the Fairview Hospital before her final campaign against Roosevelt. NVe went to the hospital with Betty Jean and found Jene Wendel there acting as head nurse. Jene told us that Wanda Pyle was also working there as a dietition. After visiting Miss Uptygraft we saw Royce Wright who was recently featured :it a local arena with his gang of dare-devil drivers. After the show Royce had the misfortune to slip on a bananna peeling and break his leg. Stopping in Ft. Wayne we looked around for a place to eat our evening meal and saw a large sign reading, Dine at Dyners . We went inside and found it was managed by our classmate. Eugene Dynes. In the morning we rushed out to Hoagland to hear a sermon by the famous Rev. William H. Orr. His subject was, 'Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not. Eccl. 1211. After this very inspiring sernirn we continued our way to Bryant. The next day we went to the Modern Beauty Shoppe and found Beatrice Kenyon, the owner, curling Bob Mastefs hair. Bob told us he was head of the Jey County Road Build- ers, Inc, He said that he had recently paved our old familiar lover's lanes. At Portland we saw Keith Gillespie on the street. He was going to the County Agent's ofhce tor information on feeding his new breed of hog, the bop- shire. We went :long with him and found the county agent was Leonard Dale. He said he enjoyed his work very much. When we arrived in New York we stooped at an air field. The field was cwned and Operated by Duane Dicksfn and Fred Haffrer. We also saw Richard Shawver there. He was getting his heilicopter refueled. He said he had been at traveling salesman ever since he had graduated from High School. We went back to our shop very well satisfied with our short vacation. - Jene Wtndel. Hazel Pyle. Dorothy Frank SINGING IN PERIL Can U Imagine ? 'P 'P Virginia Craig not crackin' her gum? Second team yell leaders. Hazel and Dorothy. YET, IN OUR HEARTS. Our Class Here come the seniors. Of nineteen fourty-five. Marching along so cheerfully, To the Bryant High School jive. I'll try to name them. As they come marching past, And say a little about each. If they don't come too fast. First we'll have Virginia Craig. Who really likes her candy, Who is always in a joyful mood, With laughter always handy. Leonard Dale comes next, And of course his Model A. He is always having trouble. With the darned thing eveiy day. Bob Davidson comes marching on, With his happiness so dear, He likes to ride on horses, And graduate from here. Here comes a familiar face. I believe it's Eugene Dynes, Who wants both rest and peace, And for happiness he pines. Delbert Flesher comes marcing by, He had a swell G. I.. He likes to dance and swing, But never tells a lie. Here comes Dorothy Frank. Who is laughing all the while, And any time you can't find her, Just look for Hazel Pyle. Next is Keith Gillespie. Who is a friend to all, He got some brand new tires, When his gas was gone this fall. Here comes Fred Haffner, From the Main Street Service Station. Of course that's in Portland. He thinks it's the best in the nation. Beatrice Kenyon is coming now. Her sportsmanship is swell, We call her all kinds of names, But the source she considers well. Bob Masters is following her. Alphebetically of course I mean. He runs around with the Uptygraft girls At least that's what we've seen. Ah! I see Betty Morgan, She works down at the General Store. We call her Cig for short. But she doesn't care any more. Come on kids clear the stage, Bill Orr is coming on, And every place that you have been, You'll find that he has gone. Here comes Hazel Pyle, She is the president of our class. Ask the girls about the election, And they'll just let the matter pass. This girl you see is Wanda Pyle, No relation to Hazel at all, Say,-Wanda, where's your beau, The one you had last fall? Richard Shawver is coming next, A fine lad you'll find is he. Vie all torment him about the girls, That he is trying to see. Betty Jean Smith we know you're here So come out and show your face, Let these people have a look at you, Come on smile. just in case. Jene Wendel comes marching out. As if she were in a parade, Come on kid, just relax, There's no need to be afraid. Here comes Virginia Uptygraft, You certainly should know her, Bob Masters does I know, From the scenes I've seen occur. Here comes Royce Wright, Who never drives too slow. His Ford is like a Chameleon. It changed color not long ago. And last of all just me. Who really likes a friend, Who hasn't been here long, But Irstayed until the end. After much advertising, hard work, and practicing. we had the play ready to present on Febiuaiy 10th and 12th. Unfortunately, there was Z1 bad snow storm that week and the roads were blocked so that we had to put it off for a week. The first night we all had slight cases of stage fright but soon found that there was really nothing to fear. The second night Royce Wright was unable to take his part and Mr. Deaton, our director, very successfully played it. Leonard Dale played the part of a country boyg Fred Haffncr, the new dean of Cold Canyon Collegeg Jene Wendel, college registrar: Delbert' Flesher, a young man looking for his idealg and Eugene Dynes, a lunatic. A group of college boys and girls added much to the play with their heart troubles and loves. Playing the parts of these were: Bill Orr, Hazel Pyle, Virginia llptygraft, Royce Wright, Wanda Pyle, Virginia Craig. Hits and Runs With superb playing by all the boys on the squad the Bryant Owls finished one of their most successful baseball seasons with a record of five wins and one game lost. The team started the season with an easy victory over their old rival, Gray, by a score of 14 to 6. Defending our home diamond against Poling we scored an overwhelming victory of 22 to 5. Still feeling the bitter effects of last years defeat handed us by Berne, we won a hard fought game to a score of 14 to 12. On October 11 we were handed our first defeat by a magnificent Berne team, 5 to 3. Winding up the season Bryant defeated Gray 19 to 4.
