BASKETB LL After passing through a period of Dark Ages, The Bry- ant Owls emerged into a Renaissance Period ! After the boys who would play on the team began hearing and read- ing accounts of our fellow schools' basketball practices and games, they yearned for a Bryant team. Bryant was without a gymnasium, a coach, and a sched- ule. Added to this was the problem of transportation to a gmynasium for practices and to the games if a schedule should be made. After a prudent study on the subject, Mr. Beck and the future ball players agreed that a basketball team could be managed by the cooperation of all involved. Bryant was able to rent a gymnasium th1'ough the kind- ness of the officials of the Geneva school. Bryant was able to arrange a schedule of nine games. It was also possible to enter the Jay County Tournament and the Sectional Tournament. On the opening practice date, Mr. Beck, who had agreed to act as coach, was greeted by a group of eighteen enthusiastic boys. Only two of the entire group had had any varsity experience and only three had had even second team experience. Several of the group had never seen a basketball game. Work began in earnest. Despite all the handicaps, the boys developed rapidly in their knowledge and ability to play the game. The record of the team and their opponents is as follows: Bryant 12 Poling 29 Bryant 20 Poling 55 Bryant 21 Geneva 71 Bryant 43 Jefferson 5 Bryant 16 Madison 30 Bryant 23 CTournamentJ Poling 33 Bryant 37 Jefferson 8 Bryant 16 Geneva 39 Bryant Poling Bryant Madison Let us hope that the 1944-45 season can start with fewer handicaps and that Bryant High School can take her rightful place in the field of sports.
