B yan Station Senior High School Lexington, Kentucky I 969- 70 t y a I'tiik',.' l, 02 x O Time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, lifetimes. Memories are not measured, only held onto as moments of time not yet slipped away. The time you spent at Bryan Station High School will long be remem- bered; times of tears, heartaches, smiles, laughter, winning, losing, teachers, classes, friends. That is the purpose of this book: to bring those memories closer and keep them for you. Time is a never stopping phenomena that ticks its way into the future, dulling minds and covering memories. There is only you and this book to hold force against timels swift passage. Neither is complete, but together they can capture those moments that made your life at Bryan Station during 1969-1970utruly a time for us. A Time For Us All Time Is Ours A moment here, a moment there, And soon an hour has passed away. We note while hardly yet aware, The passing of another day. We think we have no time to spare; How well we fill it, who can say? A moment here, a moment there, And soon an hour has passed away. Yet this is certain everywhere, Then figure it as best you may: All time is ours for work or play, All time is ours to richly share, A moment here, a moment there. If anything, this year was more active, more exciting, and more trying than those which have gone before. Mr. Grider provided a tower of strength and a voice of auothority during the year. XVhen his voice came over the loudspeaker, every- one stopped what they were doing to listen. He sought and came up with solutions to the many problems with which he was faced. Under Mr. Grideris capable and able leadership, Bryan Sta- tion has grown into one of the leading,Y schools in the state of Kentucky. Student Council In a year beset with problems, the Student Council did an admirable job of providing a bond between all the students at Bryan Station and a forum for all their viewpoints. Under the capable leadership of the officers and sponsor, the Student Council solved most of their problems and counted 1969-70 as a successful year. Attacking student apathy early, the Student Council provided many activities to get students involved. The Council sponsored Homecoming Dance, several as- semblies, and set aside a special week as llGet it To- getheru XVeek for fun and activities which would in- volve everyone at Bryan Station with their school. The Bryan Station Student Council was active in Student Council organizations locally and statewide. A Bryan Station student served as President of the Inter- School Student Council and other Bryan Station students served as officers and in other capacities in ISSC. Bryan Station became the President school of the Kentucky Association of Student Councils and as President school served as an example for other councils in the state. Bryan Station was also represented in the state Student Council workshop and in the national Student Council convention. This was a year of experimentation for the Student Council. Trying many types of meeting styles and dif- ferent means of student representation, the Council sought the best way to provide a democratic student government for Bryan Station that involved all the students and could answer to all of them. Through their experimentation, the Student Council discovered the weak and strong points of all the plans and then combined the best parts of each to make a stronger and better Student Council at Bryan Station. Under the direction of Head Coach Dan Haley, the Big Green Machine ground out an impressive record of 110-1. The only defeat was dealt by Elizabethtown during the state finals play-off. Up to that time, the Machine had defeated all teams on their regular schedule and had gained fame throughout the state as a tough opponent as they downed such highly ranked teams as Thomas Jefferson, Camp- bell County, and Corbin. Despite the cold weather, each win was a solid victory as BS. averaged 31.7 points per game, allowing their opponents only 5.7 points per game. At each game they brought recognition to Bryan Sta- tion as spectators crowded the stadium eager to see the Big Green Machine in action. Their spirit and determination were qualities that set them apart from other teams, as their desire to win made them set their goals high for nothing but the best. Most impressive, however, was their unity-unity that could be seen as the players operated as onPa machine with each man doing his part of the job. They had a 3-1 record in dual meets and placed second in both the junior and senior high divisions at the Fayette County Invitational. In the state meet, the BS girls placed fourth. Wlorking under the direction of Coach Barnett, the birls, gym- nastic team worked long and hard and hzd a fine season be- cause of it. Swimming If nothing else, it can be said that Bryan Statiods swimming team was determined and dedicated. Beginning the year without a pool and with a limited number of par- ticipants, the team swam on to the state meet. After finally locating facilities, they swam a mile a day on weekdays and two miles a day on weekends. Under Coach Giancola's guidance, each team member showed much improvement during the year. The team made a good showing against area schools and several from out of town. For the swimming team, 1969-70 was a year of individual effort and resulting achievement. Coach Giancola presents a trophy to Adele Green who qualified among the top six 1' the state in two events. Coach Giancola presents letters to members of the team. A. Captain Norman Olsen drives. Golf Although the golf teamhs record of three wins and sixteen losses may not sound suc- cessful, it did show a marked improvement for the team over the year before. Bryan Station had many excellent players Who sac- rificed most of their spare time for golf. Both Coach Barlow and the team gained much experience during the yearhs play and practice and counted the time on the golf team as well spent. Track mom Dedication and hard work are elements necessary to make any team a winning team. The 1970 Boys Track Team proved this over and over as their long hours of tough practice gave them winning results. Under the direction of Coach Paul Woodall, outstanding truckmen participated in nearly every event. The boys spread their fame as they won or placed in meets in Boone County, Bellevue, Knoxville, and Paducah. Their efforts and hard work were rewarded as they captured such vital meets as the Mid-State Conference and the Louisville Invitational, which only the top eight AA teams in the state attend, and as they placed second in the regional meet. Barney Blair receives the Most Valuable award. Kenneth Chenault places in the long jump. Distance runner Mark Bruins finishes first again. Jeff Fuller vaults his way to second place in regional meet. New talent appeared and blended in with more experienced members, adding new depth to the 1970 Girls Track Team. Coached by Mrs. Compton, the girls were required to put in hours of practice that were long and tiring. Yet these long hours of practice, whether in the school halls or on the track, were what proved to make the difference as the girls captured first place in the Fayette Invitational, and tied for second in the regional meet. Both Bryan Station's tennis teams worked long and hard and it paid off in the end as both teams had record breaking seasons. Weatherwise, the ten- nis season occurs at a bad time of the year, but the tennis play- I I . 3 , t - , :' .7 3 ; ers did not let snow, rain, or , , ' t i 7am... p f't wind stop them as they practiced , 1t . Baseball Bryan Stati'oxfs baseball team had a successful year, finishing the season with a 12-6 record. Overcoming rain and other difficul- ties, the team managed to play a full schedule and met most of the area teams. All the work proved worthwhile, though, when they played to capacity audiences and received standing ovations every night. The story, based on the Dicken's novel, Oliver Twist, is set in Victorian England. It is the story of a poor orphan boy, Oliver, who turns out to be the grandson of a wealthy family. The story follows him from the Parrish Wtorkhouse run by the XWidow Comey and the town beadle, Mr. Bumble, t0 the undertakers, Mr. Sowerberry, tKevin O,Conn00. He goes from there to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and is inducted into the Thievest Kitchen by Mister Fagin. There he meets. all the low life of London-Nancy, Bet, Bill, and Fagin's Boys. His worry spreads to Bill Sikes who, according to Fagin, is the best thief in London. They plan to recapture Oliver. Bill forces Nancy, who is his girl, to pose as Oliver's sister. They are successful and bring Oliver back to the Kitchen. Fagin, Virgil Covington, reviews the Oliver Situation. The Artful Dodger offers the hungry and homeless Oliver all the necessities of life . . . and then some! Maybe I'll finally make Eagle Scout for this good deed! Don't look now, but is somebody watching me? Meanwhile Mr. Brownlow has discovered that Oliver is his grandson and is very anxious to have him back. Mr. Bumble, now married to the XVidow Corney, is forced by her to go see Mr. Brownlow. As a result they both lose their jobs. Back at the kitchen Nancy's conscience begins to bother her. She goes to see Brownlow and promises to bringT Oliver to London Bridge at midnight. Bill follows them and murders Nancy at the Bridge. He grabs Oliver and runs, but to no avail. He is shot on the Bridge. Oliver is reunited with his grandfather. Oliver comforts Bet aftff Nancy's murder. It'll only hurt a second when I pull that nasty 01d cavity.
