But to the girls on the 1968 Track Team, it was worth it. The girls, coached by Mrs. Compton, and Mrs. Deaton captured first place in the Fayette County Invitational Track meet and second place in the regional meet. 7i State Wrestling Tournament Held at BS Wrestling Team 0 to rt BACK ROW: B. Long hours of practice and performances at school basketball games paid off for the 1968 Gymnastics team when they entered local and state competition. After placing first in the Fayette County Invita- tional Meet, the boys team went on to rank sixth in the state. The girls placed second in the Fayette County Meet. They Might Have Been Muddy, Battered, and Cold, but . .. 76 They weren't beaten, no, not even in the Harrison County game when the final score testified differently. The football team fought so long and so hard that the freezing rain and biting wind became sec- ond nature to them. Frost-bitten hands and ears were just as unimportant as the temperature to the proud unfaltering team. When they raced onto the field they existed for that touchdown and nothing more. Led by the spirited attack of Billy Lane tquarter-backT, Brian Foster thalf-backT, Jerome Howard ttackleT, and Dale White tfuIl-backT, the Defenders battled their way into the best season ever recorded by a Bryan Station team. With a schedule equal to that of any school in the area, the Defenders stormed off the field with a 9-1e1 record. The only defeat suffered by the team was ad- ministered by Harrison County, winner of the conference. And, although statistically defeated, the Defenders were within one point and twenty yards of victory when the final buzzer sounded. The tie came in one of the many soggy home games when the Defenders met Woodford County. In the mud, fog, and rain, the Defender's speed was hampered considerably, and the Woodford County Yellow Jackets, outweighing the Defend- ers, played them to a 0-0 tie. Each victory was a major one, because al- most every team on the schedule out- weighed the Defenders by more than twenty pounds per man; however, the wins that proved most impressive to the loyal fans were with arch rivals Henry Clay, Lafayette, and Bourbon County. 77 They d b go 00 u U S n O 78 role in football during the 1968 season. A trip to Clearwater, Florida proved to be a high- light of the season. Team members collected bottles to finance the trip sanctioned by the Kentucky and Florida High School Athletic Boards. While in Florida, they played and beat St. Petersburg and Tarpin Springs High Schools. However, the first de- feat of the season was administered by Ciearwater. Back in Kentucky the team was to face some sweet victories and some very bitter disappointments. They ended the season by being named co-cham- pions of the Mid-State Conference Title. The difficulties arose from such problems as rainy football weather and long, tedious, after-school practices. Although the job was hard, the cheerlead- ers succeeded in promoting spirit and supporting the teams. The girls were rewarded for their efforts when they received the second place trophy in the FORTY-THIRD DISTRICT BASKETBALL TOURNEY. The Pep Club aided the cheerleaders in a drive to boost school spirit. The club sponsored special skits at school pep rallies, several bonfires, and a motor- cade to the Lafayette game. Superior ratings were won by the Advanced Choir tpictured at tom, the Girl's Chorus, ttop rightL and the Chamber Choir trighU in a state- wide contest held at the University of Kentucky. In addition, the Advanced Choir received the title of Best Choir Participating in the Central Kentucky Division of the state contest, a very high honor. Mr. Charles Wells directed all choirs. Representing Bryan Station in All-State Chorus held in Louisville, Ky. were Deborah Greene, soprano; Terry Grimes, bass; Michele Johnson, alto; and Gary Williams, tenor. H2 Summer students at Eastern Ken- tucky University were disturbed in late August by the sounds of brass and drum beats which pierced the air as the Bryan Station Marching Defenders began their annual prac- tice camp. The band members were rewarded for their efforts when they made their triumphant showing at half-time at Bryan Station football games. Orchestra and band members worked hard and practiced long hours to perfect their talents and abilities. Other school organiza- tions were invited to build booths for the festival and compete for the best booth. At the dance that even- ing, Debbie Nash was crowned queen of the festival. Other activities the club sponsored this year were the Christmas decorations in the front hall, a Spring art show at the Eastland Shopping Center, and a rum- mage sale. The club also opened a school art gallery, the first permanent high school art gallery in Kentucky. 116 H7 The Von Trapp children line up for their father's strict military inspection. tRighU Maria Uudy MonthieT meets the stern Captain Von Trapp tDavid WyattT. First there were weeks of preparation- auditioning, rehearsing, searching for props, making costumes, painting scen- ery, memorizing lines and music. Then it was opening night for The Sound of Music under the direction of Mrs. Barbe ara Hull and Mr. Charles Wells. The cast was delighted with one member of the audience who turned out to be the grandson of the original Maria Von Trapp, about whom the play was written. The Man Who Came to Dinner Delights Audience 120 Since all the Hull productions have their great mo- ments The Man Who Came to Dinner could be no exception. From the Lee Cogan-Marilyn De Long love scenes to Sylvia Gingrich in her mummy case, it was a humorous but memorable production. Perhaps it was Sandy Page whose axe-happy disposition saved the day for Doug Howard, or Barbara Hopwood who couldn't wait to get her hands on Sylvia's hair, or the impossible couple, Vicki Glass and Ken Murphy, who set the side-bursting tempo. Whatever the motiva- tion, this group of young actors and actresses created some unforgettable characters who have become as much a part of the school as the people who por- trayed them. Selling ads, gathering news, taking pictures, following up stories, meeting deadlines, completing page layouts, editing, and proof- reading were the journalistic duties carried out by the Defender's editors and staff. Sponsored by Mrs. Stapleton, they worked long hours to provide Bryan Station with a superior school newspaper in 1967-68. For the juniors, the feeling was the pressure of trying to finish the decorations and other plans for the big day, while for seniors, the excitement was the knowledge that this was to be their last prom. Even many faculty members, particularly the junior sponsors, were anxious about Prom arrangements. This feeling of expectation continued on the day of the Prom when boys and girls made last minute preparations for the dance. Finally, as couples slowly gathered at the Tates Creek Student Center, one could still see a look of anticipation on their faces which probably would not leave them until the last song had been played or the final decoration had been thrown away. 123 The Crown-Bearers Come Forward. .. 124 And Debbi I5 Queen Candle light flickers across expectant faces, faces alive with anticipation, softly radiant with joy, sparkling with emotion. But the lam- bent flame also plays among solemn, thought- ful faces that are touched with a tinge of sad- ness. In the soft glow of the candlelit interior, the varied moods of the 1968 Senior Prom are reflected. Those in attendance will have cher- ished memories of this night that will linger on long after flowers have wilted, bids have yel- lowed, curls have fallen, and the last candle has flickered, bringing the long night to a re- luctant close. Juniors served as a link between sophomores and seniors in 1967-68. They raised money for their class project, the Junior-Senior Prom, by sponsoring various activities. These included a Jam Session, Spaghetti Supper, and the Ju- niors vs. Seniors football game. Junior Class officers U. to r3 are: Donna Showalter, Vice- president; Lynn Dix, President; Susan Hicks, Treasurer; and Joyce Sallee, Secretary.
