Steps to Success Higher mathematics proves attractive to seniors this year as thirty-five enroll in a new college-level course which includes solid geometry, advanced al- gebra, and trigonometry. This, added to our basic courses in general and business math, two years of algebra and two years of geometry, makes a strong mathematics maior. SOCIAL STUDIES Seniors find themselves absorbed in social prob- lems as all take the required course in American government, one semester of which consists of eco- nomics. In addition, eighty-three enroll in the half- year psychology and sociology courses. Practical problems of family budget, insurance, and consumer science are included. All iuniors study U.S. history, while fifty-five soph- omores elect the courses in world history. CURRICULUM BALANCE Rounding out our major academic fields, we have such daytime brighteners as art, vocal music, or- chestra, band, health, physical education, and driver training. These help us develop our personal talents and make us better citizens. We also have a strong department of audio-visual education which makes movies, filmstrips, slides and records available to enrich all courses. Right: LAND HO! David Huntley and Dee Copeland survey the football field as part of their senior math course. Ways with Words In an age when ability to communicate with others is often the key to success, our language and commercial courses give us ability to make better use of words, spoken, written or read. Required to take three years of English, we all be- come familiar with great literature, learn to use the resources of the library, improve our speech in so- cial and business situations, and organize our ideas in written compositions. Seniors may study journalism, and fourth year English takes pre-college seniors into world literature and the preparation of more advanced research papers. Speech, another elective for seniors, trains us in all aspects of this universal function from its physiological basis to the finished public speech. Speech therapy is available to those who need it. Our Spanish course is enriched by lab work, while Latin students, for the first time, are able to round out their work with the fourth year study of Vergil. Our commercial department enrolls more than half our students for some type of business training. This year typing became a one-period course ex- tending over the sophomore and iuniors years, busi- ness English and math are electives for sophomores. About one fourth of the senior class will graduate with ability to do some kind of commercial work. The department also provides each teacher with student typists.
