HAUGER B.A., M.A. MEMORIAM As we began our Senior year, we were saddened by the absence of Mr. VV. F. Hauger, who passed away July 20, 1957. Mr. Hanger was a teacher in Bryan High School for thirty-one years, during which time he taught journalism, English, and literature. He was an advisor to Mask and Sandal for twenty-one years, and he directed all the Sen- ior class plays during the time he was here. He was the originator of Hi-Life, which won many awards for excellence. We dedicate our book to his memory, mindful of the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes which he taught to so many of us: Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by lifefs unresting seal C 'Q , 5 a ,Af ,if ., Hr if in Srrrlvr Ilve' l,e flI'l' Ifrlzfurl I IJIA1' HH nf lflr' rlfllwl f1'rII'lZ1'lx Alfxs Alzlx H1111 ,UL Ifflgflrr' fllrrlm nl Ihr flmfl' VTQHIIIII1' fm' mail N111 rlzvwzgm. sem,-W 'T gg M-M-M f H. W. ROGGE Supt. Rogge is pic- tured standing in front of the new high school. Enrollment Increases School Heads Plan Expansion The new Bryan High School was the major concern of Superintendent Howard Rogge and the Bryan Board of Education for the past year. Since the actual construc- tion began last summer, the group held many extra meetings. Mr. Rogge is active in several professional organiza- tions including the State Department of Education Transportations Committee, the State Music Education Association, and the Public Relations of the Ohio Edu- cation Association. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green and Ohio Northern and his Master of Arts in School Administration from Ohio State. Mrs. Kenneth Rychencr, Mr. Rogge's secretary, was a Bryan High School graduate of 19-H. BRYAN CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION l CARL MILLER F. R. PARKER K Y t r R. K. MIGNERY ARTHUR SPLETZER, J I' MARGARET H. A. LINDSEY HOWARD MANEVAL RYCHENER H. S. Office Moves junior High Has New Principal Mr. Newell spent his third year as principal at Bryan High School planning and arranging for the move from the old building to the new school. By this rearrangement, the pupils under his supervision were reduced to the upper four grades only, comprising about 580 students. Mrs. Zeta Cordia Reflects Student Life Yearbook Staff Publishes Volume 45 Starting their year with a trip to Chicago to the N.S.P.A. oonvention, the Annual Staff then settled down to regular Thursday night meetings at Mrs. Robrock's home. This year they had a deadline on the fifteenth of every month from September through March and spent many weekends with last-minute work. Along with the work they enjoyed the snacks always on hand, and the antics of the Robrock zoo. The business staff, with Mr. Johnson as advisor, was kept busy with tax stamps, pencil sales, coat check at the basketball games, subscriptions, and patrons. A new project this year was the Christmas semi-formal dance with White Christmas as the theme. The profit from these helped to pay for our 152 page an- nual, which was available this year for the first time with the buyer's name stamped in gold on the cover. Another innovation this year was the admission of yearbook staff members to the honorary journalism society, Quill and Scroll. Becky Rogge, David Cayton, Larry Raymond, jenny Hester, and Wayne Long qualified for membership by carrying major responsi- bility for the publication of the journal. j The 1957 Zeta Cordia received a First Class Honor Rating from N.S.P.A., giving this year's staff a high goal to match. The name, Zeta Cordia, is rich in Bryan tradition, being derived from the names of the two literary societies which published the first yearbook in 1913. Seven hundred copies of the 1958 book were printed, six hundred were bound in padded covers and one hundred in paper. The price to students was three dollars and seventy-five cents, or four dollars for a per- sonalized copy. ZETA CORDIA BUSINESS STAFF. Seated: Sals- bury, Frank, Smith, Murray, Miller. Hanger had done so much to advance. Nlilae O'Neil was in charge of business, keeping the price per copy at fifteen cents. Assistant editors were lNlzu'y Fisher. Alma Bly. Larry Salsbury. Larry Jackson. and .lim Ginther. Staff members attended the summer workshop at Ohio University and the fall conference at Ohio State. Many earned membership in Quill and Scroll. Fosters Interest in Teaching Bryan Does Its Part to Combat Teacher Shortage larger than ever this year with 132 members. They started with a wiener roast at Mrs. Robroclis home. At a later meeting, Mr. Saunders spoke on Vocational Agriculture to them and at other meetings they enjoyed good educational movies. A book, lVhy Teach?,' was purchased for tl1e members to read. This book, edited by Louise Sharp, is a collection of tributes to teachers by 120 famous people. Supervised by Mr. Webster and Mr. Johnson, the Bryan club had charge of the district F.T.A. meeting in Toledo when the Northwest Ohio Education Associa- tion met in October. At their annual Christmas party in Washington School, they had a comical gift exchange. A schedule of elementary classroom visitation was especially valuable. A point system was adopted to stimulate good attendance. The members received a point for each meeting they attended and were given two extra points for perfect attendance. Other points were given for helping teachers with classroom work. 104 F.T.A. OFFICERS Kathleen Keen ............................ President Dick Brannan . . . .... Stadium crowds thrilled to these words as the hall'-tiiue hand show began at the nine football games and hir. Dally served as announcer. Complet- ing his lilteenth year with us, Mr. Hartman kept the band hard at work during seventh period practices to give its audiences snappy drill and dance routines, plus occasional comedy, such as the Minstrel Show act. llryan's parade list included To1edo's Labor Day celebration, the Van XN'ert Peony Festival, the Wlau- seon Homecoming, and a trip to Bob-Lo Island. Locally the band stepped out for the Fireman's Con- vention, the Bryan Jubilee, the Recreation Park open- ing. and the Halloween, Christmas, and Memorial Day parades. They went to the State Fair for the second time, ond made their usual fine showing at the Williams County Fair. The concert band gave Hve performances, plus competing in the district contest at Napoleon, taking part in the Panorama of Music. and playing for stu- dent assemblies in Stryker and lVauseon. Being the largest group thus far, they helped in the recruitment of other beginners. In March they presented a joint concert with the B Band. JUNIOR CHORUS Composed of Freshmen and Sophomores, this year's Junior Choruses were divided into two sections of seventy members each. In spite of the difficulty in scheduling such a large number, each group had an even distribution of voices. The activities of the choruses, directed by Mr. Dally, were mainly for improvement in reading skill, repertoire building, and vocal development. Approx- imately sixty songs passed through their folders. They placed little emphasis on performance: however, the groups sang two selections at the Christmas concert and at the Panorama of Music in May. Bryan Bears Post 7-2 Mark Best Since 1940 The Golden Bear Gridders turned in their finest season in the last 17 years. Although the squad was light, the boys showed the qualities which make for greatness. The co-operation and hard work at practice contributed greatly to success of the team. SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Wleaver fired the passes which pulled the team out of some tight spots. Perkins was the man who saw that the ball was snapped on the signal and with Weaver was co-captain. Sals- bury could pull out of the line with the best of them, while White helped out with some hard blocks. Stecovich was feared for his bone- crushing tackles. A fine blocking end, Ginther, teamed up with a hard hitting tackle, Showalter, to form a mean set of inside linebackers. Slow proved his versatility by learning to play several positions, on offense and defense. Friley was outstanding as a defensive halfback. Although these players were important, next year will find 13 lcttcrmen returning who also played an important role in the success of the season. The team won all five of their dual meets with little difficulty. They were crowned League Champs at Napoleon, win- ning an easy victory. On May 15 the thinclads played host for night relays. the first time Bryan has attempted such an event. They showed little sym- pathy for their guests. as they won five of the six trophies. losing only the shuttle-hurdle relay. Two Jims, Brannan and Martin, combined for three records. Red Brannan tied the League rec- ord and set a school record by running the 120-yard low hurdles in I4 seconds. Big Jim Martin set a new school and League record in the shot put with a toss of 48 feet Mg inches. At the District Meet, -lim set a school mark in the discus with a heave of I33 feet 3 inches. The underclass teams showed promise. The Freshmen were undefeated in two meets, overcom- ing Vtlauseon twice. The Reserves had only one meet. but it was a dandy. Gleaming in the winter sunlight, the new Bryan High School lies waiting for future generations. This Was the Year This Was the Year. . . This was IGY, the International Geophysical Year, July 1, 1957 to Dec. 31, 1958. It was a tur- bulent year, blazing with sun spots, comets' tails, and Northern Lights. In Bryan on July 4, a small, savage tornado ripped the clock from the court house and roofs from store buildings. . .And on October 4 Rus- sia launched Sputnik I, the first Earth satellite, fol- lowed shortly by Sputnik II, or Mutnik, carrying the dog Laika to her death. On February 1, the U.S. satellite Explorer took to the stratosphere. In Bryan it was the year of the bricklayer. The new high school, St. Patrick's Church, and a wing on the hospital were completed, and the armory was begun. All all-out effort to develop the Recreation Park landed Bryan in the top 22 Cities of America and made an impressive entry in the Community Achievement contest. B.G.S.U. opened a branch in Bryan. Congressman Clevenger retired, and John Hartman became a candidate in the May primary. Death claimed Bryan business men Carson Connin, Charles Hutchison, and Harry and Walter Gardner, and on February 28 Joe DeLong, B.H.S. junior, died suddenly of a heart ailment. Headlines featured integration riots in Little Rock, Billy Gra.ham's Madison Square Garden evan- gelistic campaign, and an oflicial visit from England's charming Queen Elizabeth II. The con- troversy of the year centered around American educa- tional methods versus European ones. Sportswise, the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, and Lew Burdette hurled the Milwaukee Braves to a 4-3 World Series victory over the Yankees. Ohio State defeated Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Pat Boone captured hearts with April Love. Jimmy Rogers was a hit with Honeycomb and Kisses Sweeter than Winef' The Eberle brothers sent the rock-and-roll fans with Wake Up, Little Susie. The Ten Commandments came to Bryan, and Bryanites went elsewhere to see Around the World in Eighty Days. TV favorites were the Nel- sons, Alfred Hitchcock, Gunsmoke, Steve Allen, Garry Moore, and Perry Mason. Small foreign cars became more numerous, and last year's fins were receding. Dress fashions took on a 1920 look and the sack led the Easter parade with shorter skirts and lowered waistline. And back of the facade of spring gaiety, April 1958 found fear lurking. Unemployment, the cold war, the cost of living, juvenile delinquency-all were problems that refused to go away. To the graduates of the year there was un- limited challenge and opportunity to learn more and to live up to their fullest capacities. 147 ..-......k,,,..... . , V, , f .... , vu-n.......m,.......v ,. . . --- 2, 2. gh I0 S 'll , ni f 5 as l ? i i V ' zo. ,., , 1.
