Orchestras Round Out Ambitious Musical Program Under the direction of Mr. Orville Dally. the string orchestra was started two and a half years ago. The orchestra now has a membership of fifty- five students who play violin, viola. cello. and string bass. ln addition there is a training program including forty-five future orchestra players. The main purpose of the string orchestra is to provide a balanced instrumental program, provid- ing full-time orchestra activity throughout the school. Bryan is the only school in Northwestern Ohio which offers opportunity in both band and orchestrag it will require only about five years to develop a fully-instrumented organization, S ecial honors this 'ear included a ratin' of . . 5 . . . Excellent in the string orchestra auditions held in Br 'an. ln anuarf the frou was re uested to lav . . 5 . . 4 in a string demonstration in Bowling Green. A cello player. Jeanette Ledyard. was further honored p c twenty by being selected to play with an accomplished string group in Columbus. The orchestra also traveled to a music festival at Hillsdale which included schools from South Bend. Hillsdale, and Bryan. Approximately a hundred students partici- pated in the festival. Another organization in Bryans Music Depart- ment is the dance orchestra. This smooth outfit plays for the dances after the home basketball and football games. under the direction of Mr. john Hartman. Waltcliing his guiding baton. the orchestra swings its way through the intermissions of both the Senior Class and the Mask and Sandal plays. Also, our Dance Orchestra is a vital part of the Minstrel Show, supplying features and ac- companiments. For this years Ethiopian Antics. the orchestra furnished specials by the trombone section. Joel McKee on sax. Chuck Hauger on trumpet. and Tom Wagner and Roger Drummond as vocalists. ,1 , r, Dirumrs-Onnllc D.1Hx. ,luhn H11rr111.111. l'r11Vn1 nm' 5 i.111n.1n, YX:lJ11n Ihrxu. ,Incl Bhlicc. Perhaps it was only the lil-l.S. A Cappella tuning up. Under the direction of Mr. Orville Dally, they practiced the sixth period every Monday, Wfednesday, and Friday. The A Cappella made many appearances this year, including the Thanksgiving Service, their annual Christmas concert, and several programs for the Lions' Club and the Rotary Club. They also participated in the Minstrel Show and entered the District Music Auditions held March 13, in Bryan, where they received a Superior rating. Outstanding numbers in this years repertoire were Battle Hymn of the Republic, arranged by Waring, The Wfood' chuck Song , Dry Bones, and She Wrilks in Beauty, their contest selection. This year the A Cappella elected as their otficers Sharon Zeller, Presidentg Bill Rogge, Vice-Presidentg and Christine Roebuck. Secre- tary-Treasurer. Awards were given according to the system previously used. Students who had been A Cappella members three years received a gold ping two-year members a silver pin, one-year members a bronze pin. Junior A Cappella The junior A Cappella is a group of fifty- live voices composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores who wish to train for Senior A Ca- pella. The junior A Cappella is also led by Mr. Orville Dally. They joined the Senior A Cappella in their annual Christmas program. To start the Min- strel Show they came down the aisles singing Dixie and Swanee, and joined the Senior A Cappella to make a one hundred and twenty- voice chorus which sang a very impressive Battle Hymn of the Republic. page tw entv-tw u lfntlofti row Salli Xlason. Chooses nMoonlight an The Girls' Athletic Association consists of the girls in the upper four grades who are ardent enthusiasts of sports. G.A.A. is supervised by Miss Dorotha O'Brien, the girls' physical education teacher. The girls meet once a month for a business meeting, then usually have a game of volleyball or the game of the particular season. The members always start the season by initiating the freshman newcomers. This year the club held their initiation at Garver Park, with the girls dressed as hoboes. Each girl brought a sack lunch to eat, and later everyone played truth or consequences. After that gala event, things settled down to sports. The Varsity Volleyball team won a volleyball at Montpelier at the Sports' Day Contest. The team con- sisted of Wilma Thomas, Charlene Isaac, janet Vannors- dall, Charlene Stotz, Ruth McNany, Mary Goebel, Mary Bodenbender, Margaret Krill, and Kay Yahraus. The Juniors were class champs in softball this year with Sharon Allison, Barbara Blaisdell, Margaret Ktill, Thelma Hall, janet Vannorsdall, Mary Lorntz, joan Reller, Clare Wischmeyer, jean Balzer, and Nita Clark on the winning team. In February the Senior girls played basketball at Defiance and came home runners-up. page thirty-four cl Rosesi' As Theme for Big Night Later in the season the bowlers of the club journeyed to Hillsdale to compete. In order to raise money for their main objective. the G.A.A. semi-formal dance, the club held a bake sale, sold Golden Bear sweatshirts, and had concessions at a basketball game. The most memorable event was the annual G.A.A. Banquet and Dance. Marilyn Munger and her decoration committee took the guests to the land of Moonlight and Roses. The new officers were announced and awards were given out. Girls who had four hundred points received their numeral, and those who had eight hundred points received a letter Two girls received the highest award, a pin acknowledging twelve hundred points. Then came the great moment, the announcement of the girls who had been voted the 1954 honors. Wilma Thomas received the title of Honor Girl and Mary Bodenbender was voted Maid of Honor. The require- ments for Honor Girl and Maid of Honor are the fol- lowing: must be a G.A.A. member in good standing, must have been in at least one musical organization, must be in either a dramatic or journalistic activity, must have a B average, and muSt have a citizenship rating of 98 merits.
