Although this petite, brown-haired nurse was kept busy by a wide-spread epidemic of flu and mumps, she still found time to soothe tummy aches, nurse minor cuts and bruises, or to join in a friendly conversa- tion with us. We often found Mrs. Settles hurrying busily to and from her office at the high school on her way to the two grade schools, or on an errand for some- one who was ill. Under her guidance, our school health program has improved and expanded. Here we see her with Barbara Cooley and Leroy Lepley. EUSTURIANS Sweeping the study hall and then the typing room, scraping the gum off the floor, washing the windows and empty- ing the wastepaper baskets. These were a few duties of the efficient custodians: Mr. Delber Long, Mr. Ralph Perry, and Mr. Tom Guise. Mr. Long and Mr. Perry are licensed boiler operators. These gentlemen were always consid- erate and cheerful as they scurried around with a broom, shovel, rag, or lad- der, cleaning and caring for our building. If your mother worries about the com- motion caused by three or four of her brood, tell her about our housekeepers of seven hundred children. RUS DRIVERS Six men in whom many mothers put a special trust each morning are our bus drivers. This year the men at the wheel were Rev. S. G. Cameron, Route 6: Mr. Willis McKarns, Route 192: Rev. V. C. Roebuck, Route 15: Rev. M. W. Stahl, Route 54: Mr. Wilmer Schartzer, Route 15: and Mr. Maynard Daft, Route 127. Besides driving farm pupils to and from school each day, these men, who hold Red Cross First Aid Certificates, took the band to all the football games and made special requested trips for various organi- zations. SMILI E STH TTEH5 The synchronized baton work and precision march- ing of the twirlers helped to mcrke the BHS bond Cx leoder in its division. The twirling ensemble was hecrded by Lu Ann Dean, whose spectacular fire bd- ton twirling with Sally Bowers thrilled audiences in the stadium. For the first time in its history, the band was led by two drum morjorettes, Icxri Himes and Sully Bowers, both of whom have won distinction in twirling competitions. y it M Vfilf J SSN f-ff ' 4 uve, ,M 1 4' , ,www 3 ,., ', , 5,4 , V ,7f.,:,.w f 'bf TIL-4 I' wxx W 5 ff ff, X for an QE ,Q ' ,ff 2 f 'NYJK bfi, -4 . iw, vw igiftiii U H SPANISH AMIIiUS 'Fir TOP ROW: Miss Hunt-Adviser, Moore, Sanders, Pufienberger, Hutchinson, Dierks. Later that same month, the Bryan Hi-Y played host to all presidents and advisers of the district. This year the club, under the direction of Coach Ebersole and Coach Iohnson, revised its constitution to fit present standards more efficiently. The project of Varsity B was a 50 year sports scrapbook. This book contains pictures, identifications, records, and scores of all football, basketball, and track contests since the beginning of sports in Bryan. Baseball, which has not been a school organized sport since 1918, was once again organized by Varsity B. Games were scheduled and played, new equipment was purchased by the Athletic Association, and ap- proximately thirty interested candidates turned out. The Minstrel Show in March was the scene of both a square dance by A Cappella members and countrified music including Barnyard Capers, fea- turing Country Style and Lane County Bachelor. The A Cappella was the nucleus of a joint school-community choir in an Easter Cantata which presented the Seven Last Words of Christ by Theidore Dubois. Over one hundred voices, plus soloists, a string ensemble, and ac- companiment by organ and piano made this an outstanding choral event, The band and A Cappella gave a joint public concert in May and the Choir concluded the year with appropriate music at Baccalaureate. 42 fi ,fn . It's the stu- dents' own time to discuss the problems that somehow don't fit into a course in math or English - such items as making friends, dating etiquette, getting along with the family, budgeting time and money, finding the right job. In each home room, student panels take over, student opinions are voiced, and everybody thinks about how to build a better life for now and the future. It's all part of our Guidance Program- a plan set up by a faculty committee and designed to help all our students under- stand themselves and their associates better. Besides the discussion period, our Guidance Program includes various stan- dardized tests to help students discover their best abilities and interests, and the assignment of counselors who interview each student and help him with what- ever problems may arise. This program was begun in 1948 and continues each year to improve in this important area. PANELS IN XIIITIIIN 1. lim Nye with Humbarger, Rau, Mendez, and Pack. 2. It seems only yesterday we looked forward eagerly to seeing our pictures here as freshmen. Yes, four years have passed quickly. Yet these years will be unforgettable ones, for they have held some of the most wonderful friendships and exciting experiences of our lifetime. After being officially welcomed at the Kick-Off Dance, as freshmen we slowly began to feel a part of that special group, high school. Being sophomores meant becoming better l acquainted with our fellow students, and the Iim Rubel, treasurer: Mary Io Iefferis, vice-president: Sarah Smith, sec- fC1Cll1lYI Olll' k11OWlGdge Gnd special skills retary: Herb salsbury. president. increased, and our self-assurance gradually developed. The shiny gold class rings distinguished us as juniors. We began the first of a series of money'- making projects for the Iunior-Senior. Finally we reached the pinnacle-We were seniors. We edited the annual and school news- paper, we held the seats of honor at assemblies, played our last football and basketball games, and participated in our last track meet. How nice it was to be the honored guests at the Iunior-Senior! The senior picnic marked the end of our social activities as a group, before the finale-graduation. Now that the strains of Pornp and Circumstance have faded in our minds, and we hold that small paper, the evidence of these four years-our diploma, we wonder if we are ready to take our place in the world in some chosen occupation, the armed services, or college. Yes, with Time and Experience as our teachers, we are ready to be a tiny piece in the complex machine of civilization.
