Page 12 GRASPTNG AT GRAMMAR Tossing away our funny books and suppressing our am ts we en tered our Junior high English and liter ature classes There Mrs Trees taught us to write letters to carry on conver sa ion and to use the parts of speech correctly in our social lite Miss Roux showed us that Tom Sawyer and Treasure lsland are even more exciting than Superman Under her guidance we learned how and what to read Our freshman English was in the hands of Miss Kuhn who untangled our difficulties with pronouns and verbs We took special pains to re member that 1 comes beiore e ex cept after c as we saw in the spelling books tor the last time Miss Zaugg who taught sophomore English kept us in stitches with witty sayings ln addition to studying the usual grammar and literature the class carried on fiery debates and was in itiated into parliamentary procedure Mr l-lauger gave us the final polish in our 1un1or and senior year empha sizing perfection in preparation for col lege work. The final test was being able to write compositions which were appealing and correct to the last comma. ln the journalism class which was also under Mr. Haugers supervision we acquired an understanding ot ne Nspaper work public speaking and dramatics. Our goal in studying English is to become part of a cultured society. As science gives us methods ot communi- cation - the printing press the tele- phone and the radio-we must know how to use them properly.

TCCLS PCR DEMCCRACY With textbooks as winged slippers and maps to show the way, we flew across the sands of time in our history periods. ln lunior High, Mr. Mick told us the story of America-and of the trek of the pioneer, of the flash of the Confed- erate's gun, of the clang of the hammer as skyscrapers rose. We joined both common people and kings in Mr. Wagner's world history class and learned about not only the glories of the ancient world, but also the mistakes, so that we might profit from them. Then when spring came, and we no longer could keep our minds on the text book, Mr. Wagner as- signed projects for each pupil. Choices varied and our history classes were turned into a museum for a few days, We kept up with the world today by the use of Young America, a current events newspaper. Then the tools of democracy were placed in our hands as we reviewed American history. We realized then how much we had forgotten about our own country and our forefathers. Dur- ing this year the 'llfteaders' Digest was our key to modern times. Studying the final groundwork be- fore our flight into the civic problems of adulthood in Mr. Rogges and Mr. Hauger's American Problems classes, we took the Constitution apart to seo what made it work. There we discuss- ed the privileges and responsibilties of the American citizen so that our gener- ation might realize the dreams of our forefathers. We devoted one day a week to current events in this class with the help of the weekly paper. 'Z Page i., iw
