The final test was being able to write compositions which were appealing and correct to the last comma. ln the journalism class which was also under Mr. Haugers supervision we acquired an understanding ot ne Nspaper work public speaking and dramatics. Our goal in studying English is to become part of a cultured society. As science gives us methods ot communi- cation - the printing press the tele- phone and the radio-we must know how to use them properly. TCCLS PCR DEMCCRACY With textbooks as winged slippers and maps to show the way, we flew across the sands of time in our history periods. ln lunior High, Mr. Mick told us the story of America-and of the trek of the pioneer, of the flash of the Confed- erate's gun, of the clang of the hammer as skyscrapers rose. We joined both common people and kings in Mr. Wagner's world history class and learned about not only the glories of the ancient world, but also the mistakes, so that we might profit from them. Then when spring came, and we no longer could keep our minds on the text book, Mr. Wagner as- signed projects for each pupil. Choices varied and our history classes were turned into a museum for a few days, We kept up with the world today by the use of Young America, a current events newspaper. Then the tools of democracy were placed in our hands as we reviewed American history. We realized then how much we had forgotten about our own country and our forefathers. Dur- ing this year the 'llfteaders' Digest was our key to modern times. Studying the final groundwork be- fore our flight into the civic problems of adulthood in Mr. Rogges and Mr. Hauger's American Problems classes, we took the Constitution apart to seo what made it work. There we discuss- ed the privileges and responsibilties of the American citizen so that our gener- ation might realize the dreams of our forefathers. We devoted one day a week to current events in this class with the help of the weekly paper. 'Z Page i., iw Page PRCDVE THAT l After six years of 2 2 4 and how many apples we started out on high er mathematics in the seventh grade Mr Husted saw to it that we reviewed the basic arithmetic principles thor oughly added some tricky problems and gave us a foundation in practical math We found we had just begun when Miss Andrew took us over in freshman general math and algebra classes We struggled many an hour over an egua tion only to discover that we had for gotten to change one of these gremlin + or signs Then we graduated into sophomore geometry and Junior senior advanced algebra and trigonometry All these facts and figures were im portant but we gained most from math in learning to think for ourselves We may forget the Pythagorean theorem but the ability to reason once attain ed will stick IUST BROWSING Whether we were looking for a book about cowboys and Indians or infor- mation on the chemistry of the blast furnace we were sure to find it in our 5 OOO- l l' ' ' vo ume ibrary. Miss Zimmerman busy as she was always found time to recommend a good book or to show us where to look for what we wanted. Miss Roux is overseer of the branch junior high library, where we often chuckled over a joke from one of the many magazines or did last minute re- search for that history project. Much of the routine work was done by twenty student librarians, who will- ingly checked out books and saw that the 'ip's were not mixed with the gs The growth of the library was record- y, mimeographed pa ed in a bi-weekl per, the Browser, which kept us ini formed on all new books. We planned and served breakfas and lunches and sewed a 'lfine sear on an apron and a cotton dress. Aft a year of experience We served eig complete dinners as part of the cour for the second year, which sent tant lizing odors of roast beef through ti halls. Then in a more extensive trai ing in child care, We learned how get along with little Iunior and Mai Home Ec III was mostly theory, lvl Campbell taught us how to bathe bedridden patient and to read a the mometer in a Red Cross Home Nursii Course. We prepared for our futu homes by studying marriage and fai ily relationships. Qur final accomplis ment was serving a meal for fifty pe ple. This is the course that lays ti foundation for better living in o homes. WITH SCISSCHS, PAINT, AND GLUE Our Workshop, supervised by IVI: Ames, had the atmosphere of a stud Odors of paint and glue emanati from our Work. In the seventh ai eighth grades, classes were fascinat by bright colors from Mexico and stu ies of the art of that country. We're making art reach to the fc thest corner of the school by starti3 an annual mural project in more c vanced classes. We added to the c fund by selling Easter egg bunnie Sambos and Sinatras. Page Zl OUR LOYAL CUSTODIANS Someone must have the task of pick- ing up after six hundred students, keeping the grounds well trimmed, and the building warrn on wintry days. Our faithful janitors and janitress are the ones assigned to the job, and it is a big one. Of course, there are a million little unofficial tasks or favors per- formed, but nevertheless take effort on the part of the custodians. ln the spring there is the lawn to be rolled - in summer the Delber Long grass to be cut - in the fall the leaves to be raked, and in the win- ter snow to be shoveled in the ear- ly hours before school begins. Mr. Ralph Perry and Mr. Delber Long are the ones responsible for the warmth of the building and many other jobs which make up their work. They have traversed the halls tor three years, and during this year President Rensberger, Vice President Cline, and Secretary-Treasurer Miller have been their guiding stars. Mr. Robrock, Miss Strine, and Miss Beattie have served as their advisers. Action is their mottol They are Well represented in the var- ious organizations, and also in the field ot sports. Two of the more agile girls are cheerleaders. Music seems to hold its own with this group, which has twenty-two representatives in the band. Orchestras are directed by members from this class. The A Cappella has some students from this class also. Page 34 Harry Castor, Bob Garber, Nat Acker, and Evadna Culler represent the juniors on the Student Council. This group has shown its ability during the past year, in which time Harry has served as vice pres- ident of the Council. Now that they have given the Iunior-Senior prom for the seniors, they have only one more high school year before them. There seems to be a mixed feeling of expectation and sorrow among them. , M rrrlyrr Mrllwr ' Shirley Mrller VV:Il1'1rrr Moorf- Howard Morton Annze Motter Clara Murrllo Richard McClellan Charles McCord Mildred Mcllanree Opdycke Patterson Dolores Peltcs Mary Phrllrps Martha Poet Kay Raymond Max Rensberqer loyce Rrngenburrr Georure Marilyn Mary Rrnkel Mar.on Rosenberry Duane Royal Helen Royal Bill Scott Phillrrr Shook Darlene Srrres lean Slrfe Marilyn Srrrrth Arleen Sprre Eldon Spletzer Clifford St. lohn Keith Strayer Pat Starr Helen Stutzman Dick Suter Iack Vaughn Laurzne Weber Carson Wertz lean Wheeler' Norman White Norma Wilson Karl Wolt Ioan Wrschrrreyer CLASS OFFICERS Shirley Miller, Charles Cline, Max Rensberger Page 35 Marrfruerrte McBride HALF WAY THROUGH - lohn Altman Isabel Ames Glen Bansbach Darrell Bayes Euaenza Berryman Bob Beavers Vileta Bostater Richard Bourquin Harold Boylan loyce Brenner Mary Butler Pat Byanskie Arvori Byroads Gerald Carlin Betty Carteyn Norman Castor Bernard Champion Eloise Connell lim Connolly Norma Cook Marie Cooley Bichard Cotter Pat Cross Ralph Culler lunior DeGrolf M t D G ti or on e ro Lela DeWitt Theron Diehl All E. t ce aon l.aVon Eschhoten Raymond Fisher Warren Forbes Ned Frrsbie lo Anne Fuller Richard Garver Allan Goller loan Gurwell Beverly Hageman Margaret Hamilton Marilyn Haufger Betty Hesrick Norma Hire lackie Holmes lerry Houqhlan Betty Kinter CLASS OF l946 President ,......... .... MARCHING ON AND CDN . liCOII'lG on, basses, surely you can make more noise than that. New lets hear that cymf bal crash. These are only a sample of the familiar instructions given by Mr. and Mrs. l-lartman during one of those practice periods which always seem so short. The out-ofetown activities of the band were again limited, but they did manage to get to tl1e county fair. Backing the war effort, the band cheerfully marched for blocks for the Third War Bond Rally, and played some of the favorites, such as 'Billboard' and l'Keifer's Special. During the football season, despite the mud and rain, brisk formations were handled by the bancl and each performance brought new formations to the crowd. Later, much of the time was spent in learning many of the finer points of concert playe ing. The band has acquired a great deal of new music and has played many airs from Victor llerbert, Pinafore Qperetta, and many from more modern composers. MUSICALLY INCLINED This year marked a growth in our musical organizations. The A Cappel- la, with its eighty members, and the training chorus with nearly as many, were the largest of the groups. Interest in the music department seems to have been school-wide. During the first semester most of the time was spent in preparing for the annual Christmas concert. Mr. Hart- man and the chorus worked long and hard on the various numbers included in the Scenes from the Nativity. The narratives were taken from the Bible and background music was furnished by the eighth grade girls in the bal- cony. The Ethiopian Antics, which was given but two months later, also called forth the chorus, and the auditorium rang with the jolly Dixieland airs and renditions of several familiar hits from musical comedies. The freshman chorus was conducted twice weekly, and consisted of over half a hundred members. The music in the Iunior High was directed very effi- ciently by Miss Zimmerman, who is a valuable asset to our music depart- ment. The voices which she is training now are the ones which will be singing in the larger chorus in a year or so, and the training which they receive now is very helpful. At the close of the year, the attention was focused on the spring concert, The students cooperated whole-heartedly with Mrs. Hartman and produced an- other program of which Bryan High School may be proud. These organizations have had diffi- culties to overcome just as all the oth- ers have had, but, taken as a whole, they have been very instructive and a source of pleasure and fun to all who were included. The minstrel show, the Mardi Gras, the sophomore dance, the junior-senior prom, and many others have made up Bryan Hi's social lite. Page 55 z 5 E? QUTLL AND QUTBBLE Quill and Quibble was or- iginally for furthering the in- terest of literature, but this year it has changed some- what. They were out for plen- ty of fun and they got it. They made trips to Home Ec. and Shop, displaying their talents, and have had many parties. Qther events include glorious sledding parties, games in the gym, and a big scavenger hunt. All of these get togethers were supplied with an abundance of good eats furnished by the mem- bers. EL CTRCULCD DE ESPANGL Everyone who takes Span- ish automatically becomes a member of the Spanish Club, entitled l'El Circulo de Espan- ol. Although the activities of this club are somewhat limit- ed, the members do get much enjoyment in trying to do things the Spanish way. The chief motive of the club is to promote a friendly and inter- ested feeling to w a r d our southern neighbors. TWIN ARTS The Twin Arts Club is to promote interest in the busi- ness world. Due to certain cir- cumstances the club was rath- er slow in starting this year, but by the beginning of the second semester it was organ- ized and running smoothly. Election of officers and the adoption of the clubs consti- tution were important events of the first meeting, Miss Ruby Kunkle and Mrs. l-lelen Sheets entertained at two meetings and the club has planned a few parties during the year for fun and good eats, GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSQCIATTQN Miss Strine, how many points do We get tor bowling? The purpose of this club is to develop rural lead- ership and responsibility, and to promote co-operation in the rural areas. Among the outstanding activ- ities of the F. F. A. were the ra- dio raffle, rural scrap drive, and several parties held in the fall. The chapter also sponsored two teams which brought honors to our school. The Parliamentary Procedure team won second in the district, and in the Conser- vation Contest, the boys were first in the county. The Parent and Son Banquet held in May is one of the outstanding social events of the year. BRYAN C. A. P. C. The Bryan Flight of the Civil Air Patrol was organized during the school year due to the de- mand for it by the students, and with the full cooperation of the School Board and the faculty, they got an early start. After completing the required number of hours of specified training, the Cadets received their uniforms and were inducted into the CAP Cadets. The Cadets meet for a- bout two hours on Monday eve- nings, having lessons in meteor- ology, aerodynamics, and radio code, as well as military disci- pline, courtesy, and general or- ders. ln addition to this they must have at least one-half hour of military drill. On Thursdays, eighth period, they meet for gen- eral discussion and drill prac- tice. Mr. Robrock, the Flight advis- er, is a Master Sergeant in the regular CAP and, of course, is indispensable in the mainte- nance of the flight. Miss Strine, a provisional CAP member, is the girls' adviser, and Miss Bar- stow has charge of the lunior Cadets. Q - fi , L ,A R 5 .J '-wA4, fe X -f , Egg N THE GRIDIRO ' Lf? This board plays an important part in school life and has been very efficient. COACHES Coach Taylor has now com- pleted his sixth year in Bryan. During this time he has compil- ed a very outstanding record. His basketball teams have gone to the state tournament in Co- lumbus twice and his football teams have annexed a number of league championships. His track teams have done equally as well. All in all, we think Bry- an High School should be very proud of its coach. Mr. Knecht, assistant coach, and Mr. Smith, spotter and han- dy man, also deserve much praise for the commendable jobs they have done. Mr. Husted has done a fine job of coaching in the 7th and 8th grades, and has started the boys in the right direction for future years. ON THE GRIDIRON This year the Bryan High Golden Bears probably had one of the most unsuccessful seasons which has been experienced by this ball club in quite some time. This was almost entirely due to inexperience, the Bears having only four boys on the varsity who were out for football the year before. There Were several juniors and some sophomores who saw' action on Bryan Hi's field, thus gaining valuable experience for next season, at Which time we hope the final verdict will be a different tale.
