CLASS HISTORY Early one rainy September morning a group of cheery-faced youngsters, eight of whom are members of the present senior class, entered the Dayton Street School. They were Patty Alexander, Nancy Acton, Billy Mefferd, Tom Fess, Ronnie Lingo, Leonard See, Sue DeWine, and Joyce Clark. Under the direction of our first grade teacher, Mrs. Morton, we produced the Owl and the Pussy-Cat. It was a tremendous production and will be remembered as one of the finest of first grade productions. During the succeeding five years we were joined by the following students: Diantha Whitmore, Xarifa Sallume, Avanell Gibbs, Harold Blackwood, Jim Bridgett, and Luise Rothemund. The highlights of those years were the Easter egg hunts on Mills Lawn, going to the public library to hear stories read aloud, the end of the year picnics, Mrs. Westerman's teaching us the game of dare base, and helping Mr. Lawson around the school. By 1948 we felt quite grown up for we had entered the seventh grade at Bryan High School. We were joined by Joan Shoemaker, Marian Wingfield, Walter Knecht, and Allan Hoffman. We had quite a time becoming adjusted to the new environment, and our home room teacher, Miss Jane Brown, had an equally hard time adjusting to us. In the eighth grade we were joined by Pat Sayer of Elberton, Georgia. The Highlight of the eighth grade was Mrs. Cochran's making us say yes instead of yea to the cafeteria call. Under the leadership of Mr. Gaffner, we produced our first dance, the Blarney Stone Bounce. In our sophomore year we gave the annual Christmas dance, Mistletoe Magic: we were ably assisted by our home room advisor Mr. Poux sometimes known as Willie the Pooh. Also we were joined by Sonia Louden. At the beginning of our junior year the mad Californian, Dan O'Gara, was initiated into the fold. It was in this year that we gave the greatest prom that has been produced in many a year, Moulin Rouge. The outstanding memory of this dance is that it rained all day, it stopped raining during the dance: then after the dance it began to rain again. During our senior year we had many interesting and challenging experi- ences, one of them being the arrival of Portia Robb. We began to discover that we had many responsibilities, and that life was not always a bed of roses. We finally began to reach the goal of twelve years of education. We are now ready to take the future years of education in many varied and diversified occupations. Some of us will go to college, some of us will begin to work, and some of us will go to serve our country. All of us will look back through the years to our high school days as the times when we learned to study, to adjust ourselves to each other, learn our responsibilities, and try to become useful citizens.
