CLASS HISTORY Early one rainy September morning a group of cheery-faced youngsters, eight of whom are members of the present senior class, entered the Dayton Street School. They were Patty Alexander, Nancy Acton, Billy Mefferd, Tom Fess, Ronnie Lingo, Leonard See, Sue DeWine, and Joyce Clark. Under the direction of our first grade teacher, Mrs. Morton, we produced the Owl and the Pussy-Cat. It was a tremendous production and will be remembered as one of the finest of first grade productions. During the succeeding five years we were joined by the following students: Diantha Whitmore, Xarifa Sallume, Avanell Gibbs, Harold Blackwood, Jim Bridgett, and Luise Rothemund. The highlights of those years were the Easter egg hunts on Mills Lawn, going to the public library to hear stories read aloud, the end of the year picnics, Mrs. Westerman's teaching us the game of dare base, and helping Mr. Lawson around the school. By 1948 we felt quite grown up for we had entered the seventh grade at Bryan High School. We were joined by Joan Shoemaker, Marian Wingfield, Walter Knecht, and Allan Hoffman. We had quite a time becoming adjusted to the new environment, and our home room teacher, Miss Jane Brown, had an equally hard time adjusting to us. In the eighth grade we were joined by Pat Sayer of Elberton, Georgia. The Highlight of the eighth grade was Mrs. Cochran's making us say yes instead of yea to the cafeteria call. Under the leadership of Mr. Gaffner, we produced our first dance, the Blarney Stone Bounce. In our sophomore year we gave the annual Christmas dance, Mistletoe Magic: we were ably assisted by our home room advisor Mr. Poux sometimes known as Willie the Pooh. Also we were joined by Sonia Louden. At the beginning of our junior year the mad Californian, Dan O'Gara, was initiated into the fold. It was in this year that we gave the greatest prom that has been produced in many a year, Moulin Rouge. The outstanding memory of this dance is that it rained all day, it stopped raining during the dance: then after the dance it began to rain again. During our senior year we had many interesting and challenging experi- ences, one of them being the arrival of Portia Robb. We began to discover that we had many responsibilities, and that life was not always a bed of roses. We finally began to reach the goal of twelve years of education. We are now ready to take the future years of education in many varied and diversified occupations. Some of us will go to college, some of us will begin to work, and some of us will go to serve our country. All of us will look back through the years to our high school days as the times when we learned to study, to adjust ourselves to each other, learn our responsibilities, and try to become useful citizens. PATRICIA SAYER FASHION EDITOR MADEMOISELLE MAGAZINE 575 MADISON AVENUE NEW YORK 22, NEW YORK March 10, 1964 Dear Mom and Dad, ' You'll have to excuse my using the official stationery. I'm here at my of- fice before closing time of a strenuous and exciting day. This morninglwas assigned to cover a fashion show by some of the young designers here on the coast and was surprised to find that some of the best new fashions were done by Marian Wingfield whose trade name is Mari . She suggested that we lunch together at the 21 Club, where one of our former Bryan classmates, Portia Robb, is appearing as guest pianist for this week. After Portia finished her smooth music, she came over and talked with us for a while. We learned that Sonia Louden is now head child psychologist at Fels Institute in Yellow Springs and that Luise Rothemund holds one of the top positions with the Kettering Research Foundation. After lunch as we were driving back to my office in my See Special, lYou remember - I told you that Leonard designed this jet-propelled car for mel we turned on the television set and caught the last of New York's most popu- lar disc jockey program, Joyce the Voice Clark. Someone flew over pretty low in a helicopter and if it hadn't been for the excellent traffic plan drawn up by Dr. Walter Knecht, we would have crashed into the wall of a nearby theater. I thought that the picture on the poster we brushed by looked familiar, and Marian said, Oh, yes, that's Joan Shoemaker. Her modern dance group is here for a six-week's booking. By the way, Marian, I asked, what is Tom Fess doing nowadays? QI think I wrote you that he was appointed ambassador to Lower Slobbovia.j Oh, he's started a. Shakespearean theater group in his adopted country. Guess he's got grease paint in his blood. We whizzed by a. chartered plane which had landed on the Broadway air strip. On the side was written Lightning Lingo's Lankies. Oh, that was the famous basketball team which is the sequel to the Har- lem Globetrotters. You know, we have some pretty famous people who were classmates of ours. We surely do - look at Jim Bridgett, top sports announcer, and Diantha Whitmore, whose art work is on exhibit at the Museum of Ultra-Modern Art now. Say, Pat, whatever happened to those people who stayed in and around Yellow Springs? Marian asked. Well, let's see. I answered. Bill Mefferd is president of N. C. R. in Dayton. Harold Blackwood and Al Hoffman are both ministers in Ohio. Harold married Nancy Acton after he finished college. By the way, did you read about her winning the Goose Down baking contest? No, I didn't. What happened to Pat Alexander and Avanell Gibbs? she inquired. Pat has a. music school in Dayton and Avanell is head stenographer at the Morris Bean Company, I told her. And what about Sue DeWine's being elected state senator from her dis- triCt? By this time we were outside Marian's apartment building, so I dropped her off and came back to the office. When I walked in I was handed two interviews to cover for our Interest- ing People section. One was a young man from California who operates a camp-type school on the west coast for children who wish to become cartoonists - Daniel Michael O'Gara. The next name I saw was that ofXarifa Sallume, who - the statistics claim - lives on an island in the middle of the Seine. Even the Left Bank is too con- ventional for her! This young woman owns half of Europe's wine industries. Well, folks, it's closing time, so I'll sign off for now. Much love, Pat I Sponsored by A. C. SERVICE 17 25 g , 'WW 555 52 JR' 'Hn-ws YC!
