The Light comes, and fills us with love: In the day, we can see our fellow man. Light comes, and fills us with joy: In the day, we are not afraid to smile. As freshmen, we arrive reluctantly in station wagons bulging with teddy bears, suitcases, and anxious parents. As continuing students, we return with less luggage, but higher hopes. All of us eager, excited, and a little scared too. For the freshmen, it is the beginning of an apparently endless learning process. Four years is a long time when you ' re only eighteen. For the seniors, though, it is the last time and college is already beginning to be a memory. Four years is a very short time when you have a lifetime in front of you. 1 6 Arriva ' r iiil It is not easy for any of us. Unpacking, registration, and chapel services fill our days. Spare time is scarce, and sleep is precious. But there is one consolation: school has started, and we are on our way! Registration 17 We were in darkness, Then, Light came And we saw Joy. Now we shine out Praising the Light That came through darl ness for us. I, THE LIGHT J] m m m D 20 Honors Day HONORS DAY To God be the Glory! The Fall, 1977, Semester began with a Spiritual Life Conference with Rev. Manfred Kettering of Orlando, Florida, as speaker. The challenging messages of Mr. Kettering moved us to examine our own walk in the Spirit, The Spring, 1978, Semester opened with the Bryan Missionary Conference. Once again Bryan students were stirred up by the messages of speakers Al Piatt and George Verwer, while a variety of workshops and informal meetings provided indepth views into missions and their role in our lives. Conferences 51 Around us, there is darkness But through it, Light has come Scattered ashes of night Fall around us as the Light Dawns in our hearts and awakens our minds. THE LIGHT m m O H m D PRESIDENT ' S RECEPTION We were told it was a tradition — an unbreakable one at that. Arguing was to no avail— we were doomed to go. The traumatic experience of running in formal clothes through a gauntlet of howling, rice-slinging upperclassmen dulled the initial shock of meeting our blind dates. After passing through that line, facing the long line of smiling professors and staff was easy. During the skit and slides that followed the reception line, we finally began to get to know our dates. After almost forever we left, and the dreaded President ' s Reception was over. Another Freshman memory was complete. 54 President ' s Reception FRESHMAN INITIATION We were terrified. Countless tales of woe and warning, all calculated to set our hair on end, circulated among us. We heard of electric hot seats, of being bombarded with rotten eggs, and of 20-mile treks through the country at 4 a.m. But fortunately our fears had little ground. The worst we got was the embarrassing privilege of acting in an impromptu one-act play, or of participating in a chocolate- banana pig-out. It wasn ' t half as bad as we ' d expected, and when it was over, we decided it had been fun— almost!
