FRANCE UbB5-1687t Under the leadership of La Salle, the French arrived in Texas and built Ft. St. Louis near Matagorda Bay. Spanish interest, which had begun to lag, was suddenly re-activated. Thus the French played a significant role in The Saga of Texas. MEXICO t1821-1836t After breaking away from Spain, Mexico became a symbol of tyranny to the Texans much as the British had been to the Americans in 1775. After a brief but most heroic strug- gle, Texas became a member in the community of sovereign powers of the world. TEXAS t1836-1845t The Republic of Texas found itself independent, but with problems that seemed inisoivable. Consequently, af- ter nine years, she found her way un- der the sheltering wings of the US. Eagle as the 28th State of the Union. CONFEDE-RATE t1861-1865t For reasons of heritage, Texas with ten other Southern States, began this four year adventure with destiny which richly added to her record of valor and honor. UNITED STATES H865-presentt Once again an honored state of the now fifty-star Union, Texas has cre- ated for her posterity a record of triumph, honor and gallant devotion that is deserving of our allegiance.
