Q-iL!f 1958 Dallas, Newest High School Bryan Adams Same View From Back Why el Conquistador? The founders ot this city-within-a-city which Bryan Adams High School serves gave Spanish names to its principal shopping centers-Casa View and Casa Linda-as well as to scores ot its streets, and merchants here stage seasonal fiestas. As an integral part ot a community with such a motit, it is only natural that we should pay tribute to our Spanish heritage. This we are glad to do. We have named our yearbook el Conquistador and our newspaper el Cuguar. The latter, with its anglicized spelling ot Cougar, is also our otticial mascot, emblematic ot the king ot animals native to the Western Hemisphere. El Conquistador honors an heroic breed of supermen unique in the annals ot world history. So strongly were they convinced ot their in- vincibility they in tact became invincible. Obsessed with the determina- tion to spread the true religion and extend the dominion ot their mon- archs-with lust ot gold as an added incentive-they overcame astronom- ical odds and conquered a bright new world. We as the statt members ot this tirst edition ot el Conquistador may not hope to conquer new worlds, but we can at least look skyward. -THE STAFF Contents Administration Faculty Activities Classes Athletics Personalities Military Organizations Advertisements I BRYAN ADAMS Our school proudly bears The name of Bryan Adams, SecreTary-Business Manager of The Dallas Public Schools from I943 unTil his unTimeIy deaTh in I955. WHITE'S EULOGY I have The pleasanT opporTuniTy To say a word abouT Bryan Adams. lT's difficulT be- cause iT isn'T easy To know which one To choose. ThroughouT a long period of Time fwhich now seems shorTI as we worked TogeTher, Mr. Adams was righT in The middle of The planning, The execu- Tion, and The adminisTraTion of The Dallas Public School sysTem. BuT ThaT wasn'T The Thing we valued him mosT for, Though The Type of service ThaT he gave was unexcelled. We valued Bryan mosT because he was Bryan. I never did hear anybody excepT someone who didn'T know him very well, or someone who was referring To him in a formal siTua- Tion, call him Mr. Adams. He deserved The TiTle all righT, buT we admired him and enioyed him so much ThaT iT was always Bryan. If There was some iob To be done ThaT required TacT and good iudg- menT, iT usually ended up wiTh, well, leT Bryan do ThaT. I never saw Bryan Adams when he wasn'T opTimisTic. I don'T Think ThaT I ever saw him when he wasn'T happy. And his influence in The school sysTem was reflecTed and is reflecTed now in a Thousand ways ThaT he would never have imagined. Even To The end of his days he never did admiT ThaT he was very sick. He was The mosT courageous, mosT admirable, The mosT lovable man I iusT abouT ever knew, so ThaT when The naming of This school came up, The Board of EducaTion sponTaneously ThoughT of The name Bryan Adams. And Those of us who conTinue here shall Treasure as long as we live our associaTion wiTh and memories of Bryan. We are loT beTTer folks because we had him for our friend . . .
