In this simple phrase is couched 'then deeper meaning of cue of the manifold benefits of education, and much of the exiiianafion-of, what is usually termed success. One of the most necessary alld gratifying eicperiences that 'can come to an individual is the acquisition of positive belief in his own powers and capa- bilities, and knowledge of his limitations. Of the numerous good results that should accrue from high school training none is more important than the development of self- reliance and initiative. For without self-confidence, without faith in one's own ability and decisions, nothing can be undertaken with any assurance and satisfactiong and, without self-trust, fear, timidity and hesitation will always be present to disiturb and annoy. I '- Self-trust, says Emerson, is the basis of successg' and again, says he, 'fTrust thyself, for every heart vibrates to that iron string. This does not mean presum-ptious belief based on false pride, egotism, or ignoranceg but rather confidence that springs from knowledge gained from difficulties overccme, from powers tested and proved, from desires and aspirations felt, and from determination that knows no hindrance. Self- reliance, while based upon conscious knowledge of present powers and limitations, must anticipate future attainments by making adequate preparation for their realization. This implies studyand testing of self along the line of native bent and desire. 3 Some one has said 'Count that man your worst enemy who shakes belief in yourself. Just as truly it may be said that individual is our best friendwho believes most in us and who causes us to believe most in ourselves. Likewise that teacher is the greatest teacher who can best draw out the pupil thus causing him to have confidence himself believe in his own possibilities and face out upon the world with th feeling fthat he s able to achieve something and contribute something to the world s needs. The earlier -one learns to .rely upon himself and the more fully to discover his powers the more meaningful life will become. On the contrary it is one of the sad but not uncommon sights to find pupils everywhere who are utterly lacking in self-confidence, pupils. who have not learned to rely upon themselves and who have never experienced the satis- faction lthat comes from self-reliance and achievement. W It is the increasing purpose of the high school to provide. through varied courses and varied methods of instruction adequate means for giving each pupil the fullest oppor- tunity for self-realization. Indeed, the wonderful expansion that has taken plalce in the high, school course of study is but the conscious attempt on the part of the school to minister more adequately to the varying 'needs and capacities of all pupils-to provide some work that.will be within hthe reach and the interest of all. 'It is the glory of America that men may and do rise above native environment and social conditions-that positions from the lowest to the highest are open .to all lwlio will qualify for them. Not fate nct chance but the fiat of ones own wiill isfthe criterion of success. The measure of achievement is in direct proportion to the determination and effort put forth to meet the conditions of success. Ability to do, ability to achieve ability to excel in any lint will not be possible in a large measure without insight and desire without application and preparation. without courage and determination without integrity of life and honesty of purpose. 1 5 ' L.
