Hzstor of the Class 0 1959 After eight years of grade school flfty two freshmen entered old B H S on September 6 1955 We all felt lnferxor to the big upperclassmen Our class was enlarged this year as we greeted eleven students from the DeWitt School and six students fromthe St Boniface Catholic School School had barely started when we elected class officers They were Darold Knowles President Kexth R106 Vice Presldent Judy Baxley Secretary and Judith Newsom Treasurer We chose Jack Wright Donna Browning and Cecllla Grotjan to serve on the Student Council w1th Kay Gross as the alternate Our freshman sponsor was Mlss Helen Hunt Freshman 1n1t1at1on rolled around and September 23 found the freshman boys clad in long flannel underwear with a girl's bathing suit over it high heels hose and abraxd t1ed ln a pink rxbbon The girls wore coveralls back slde to the front a.nd wrong side out a hip boot on one foot four buckle overshoe on the other and their ha1r ln ten braids tied w1th green rlbbons And of course the rulmg Semors d1dn't forget all the makeup the bushel basket equipped w1th supplies for hard work and the onions! The day was topped off with a party held by the Semors m our honor with an original funhouse of thexr own for us to crawl through This crawl was cllmaxed with a barefoot walk through amixture they said was f1sh1ng worms raw eggs and rotten grapes It felt that way too' Our Fall Festival Queen Candldate our Freshman year was Carolyn Gooch The basketball season began in all the wonderful glory Newsom Our Homecoming Queen Candxdate was Donna Browning with J lm Fowler as her escort The Wildcat team worked its way to the top as Coach Chff Lear and the boys accepted the Reglonal trophy Then the team wentto the State Tournament at Columbla where the team from Bragg City down in the boot heel ol M1SS0llIl booted us rlght out of the tournament Nevertheless we wxll never forget the thrlll that golng to STATE gave to us The year soon ended as we wished the Class of '56 good luck From green little freshmen we returned to school feeling much older and more experienced We welcomed 1nto our midst students from the B K Bruce School and Dalton Vocatxonal School Agam thls year Mrs Helen Watson was our sponsor We elected the followxng officers Keith Rice Presldent Bertie VanDeVente1 V1ce President Arta Welchert Secretary Treasurer Student Councxl members were Jack Wright Darold Knowles w1th Gary Kaiser as alternate With most of the class contrlbuting either brams or mus cles we entered a float in the Fall Festival Parade The theme was ABC 's We proudly placed thxrd among all the other beautiful floats Basketball season arrived in its usual splendor and as cheerleaders we chose Karen Messenbrmk and Arta Weichert With basketball season comes Homecoming and Cecilia GrotJan was our Queen Candidate and John Moser acted as her escort Kelth Rlce chosen by the popular vote of the entire school, attended the Sophomore Pilgrimage in Jefferson City Most of us were very anxious to see the last of May come so that we could stop being sophisticated Sophomores and become jocular Juniors We were big upperclassmen now With the coming of our Junior year we had passed the half way mark Junior officers were Larry Twyman Pres ldent Bill Hill Vice President Fritzie Gottschalk Secretary and Kay Gross Treasurer Student Council members were Darold Knowles Keith Rlce and Gary Kalser alternate At the beginning of this year B H S was changed to B1 unswick Junior Senlor High Basketball season arrived a.nd the Juniors elected Carolyn Gooch and Cecllia Grotyan for cheerleaders On November 5 we presented our Jumor Play It s A Date ' It was a story of typlcal teenage romance and confusion and was a great success We were all thanldul to our young Fnglish teacher Miss Shirley Tlpton our director and to Mrs Jeanne Barr one of our sponsors For our Homecommg Queen Candidate we elected Suzanne Heisel with Gerald Fox as her escort After Chrxstmas it was a rare thing not to see a Jumor carrylng a copy of the U S Constltution We were preparing to take those decisive tests Our clas rmgs of tue Starlxte Design arrlved on Feb ruary 25 1958 The majority of the class seemed pleased w1th the rmgs Wlth the commg of spring Coach George Carter had his track team up in shape The boys placed f1rst in the conference and second rn the d1str1ct We were really proud of them sxnce thls was the f1rst tlme a track team from B H S had done that well in years' Flnally the time arrived banquet Heap Big Pow Wow V' The theme was carried out w1th a teepee fall leaves the Indlan summer moon Indlan By the vote of the faculty members of the Jumor class were chosen to attend Boys' and Gxrls' State at Warrensburg and Fulton respectively For Girls'State FrltzleGottscha1k and Nancy Grossman were chosen with Judy Baxley and Ceclha Grotjan as the alternates Boys'State attenders were Kexth Rice Jack Wright and Charles Rrchardson and the alternate was John Moser On April 27 1958 our school system was mterrupted by an event we all had looked forward to Thanks to our admlmstratlve body we were able to move 1nto our new S450 000 school buxldlng rn the east part of Brunswlck Well lt fmally arrlved the year we would be the oldest of the upperclassmen Our Senior officers were Jack Wrxght President Sandra Grotjan Vice President Keith R106 Secretary and Darold Knowles Treasurer Student Council members were Gary Kaiser Fritzle Gottschalk and Carolyn Gooch alternate Gary was elected President of the ruling councxl and Fritzle Vice President James Kelllker and Arthur Huff were our class sponsors Carolyn Gooch our Senior candidate was crowned queen of the Fall Horse Show 1n the Brunswick Invitation I Tournament which was the first to1u'ney to be held here in many years Sandra Grotjan our Senior candidate was elected to be Home coming Queen of 1958 Darold Knowles was her escort As our annual goes to press we the Seniors have ordered our cards and annolmcements for Baccalaureate Day May 17 and Graduation on May 20th First though we hope to be invited to a Junior
