During our first year we plunged enthusiastically into both the intellectual and social aspects of school life. Most of us looked at the upperclass- men as some kind of superhuman creature-as indeed they seemed. The first thing we accomplished as a class was the electing of our class oiicers. We elected Peter Brown president, Dick Crossman vice-president, Sally Favor secretary, and Danny Caron treasurer. This Freshmen class made a fine showing at Snogard that year. The theme of our booth was ring the bell and dunk the duncef' Some unfortunate members of this Freshmen group were subjected to a very pasty mixture whenever a sharp-shooter rang a cow bell by hitting it with a ball. Our assembly that year was a contrast between schools in the United States and Russia with a grand finale of American entertainment-a talent show. Freshmen teams that year made a credible stand. The cheerleaders who backed these teams continued to do so in the next few years. The Varsity cheering squad has been dominated by the class of 62 for the past three years. The following year a promising group of Sophomores appeared on the portals of BlH.S. However, their number had dwindled slightly from the previous year. Our class officers were president, Brian Warren, vice-president, Linda Pierce, secretary, Carole Lachanceg and treasurer, Mary Ieppesen. Under their capable leadership, we produced an assembly about TV quiz programs. Our Snogard booth that year was a game where balls were thrown into cans for prizes. As juniors, the Class of 62 was represented by President Dick Gurney, Vice- President Larry Crooker, Secretary Jean Brush, and Treasurer Carol Brooks. It was during this year that we acquired a theme song- Night Theme. Our Snogard booth, which contained three games, dart throwing, ring tossing, and a magic trick, which was chosen the best booth at the carnival and remained up for the annual Snogard dance. The assembly that year featured a brave group of Juniors absconding with Castro's Cuban rum. This last year at B.H.S. has been a busy one. The hard work of our Senior boys on the football team resulted in a non-defeated season and the State Championship. The Senior Class Play Arsenic and Old Lace' was received very well by its audience. Oflicers this year are President, Mary Jeppesen, Vice- President Pam Neal, Treasurer Bobbie Lott, and Secretaries Carole Lachance and Linda Pierce. As we leave B.H.S. we abandon one life and enter another, but the memories of the past few years shall remain with us always. 64 Heinz Behrmann of Germany B.H.S. was privileged to play host this year to exchange student Heinz Behrmann from Halstenbek, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Heinz succeeded Barbara Bauke of Lubeck as our third exchange student in as many years. He came to us from the Bismarkschule in Elmshorn in the absence of a student prepared to come from the Iohanneun, where one of our students, David Millay, is studying this year. Heinz studied with the juniors this year and we sincerely hope he enjoys the rest of his stay with us in Brunswick. He feels that Americans are friendlier than Germans and have more friends. They take life easier. Heinz's pleasant personality and friendly ways have won him many friends around Brunswick. We extend to him our best wishes for happiness and success and hope that he will carry our warmest greetings back with him to our German friends. . 65 CLASS OF '63 PRESIDENT Gwyath Smith VICE PRESIDENT joan McDuff SECRETARY Sue F ides TREASURER Loretta Michaud 1.1 vi' my' ww uf Vx' 'J L-fur Q-wwwwr CLASS OF '64 PRESIDENT Laura Jeppesen VICE PRESIDENT Carol Ann Van Sant SECRETARY Jeannine Pelletier TREASURERS Sally Coulette-Priscilla Michaud l Q K CLASS UF '65 PRESIDENT Denis Beaudoin VICE PRESIDENT Linda St. Piere SECRETARY Caroline Dane TREASURER Anne Webster many Pam Glynn m Bobliie Lott Linda Pierce Pam Neal m Mary Sxmard m Claire Labbe Joan McDuff 69 Sue Fides Hunt DRAGUN S BECUMI Cloutier does it again! SE IOR F OUTB LL The Seniors on the Varsity Football Team should feel proud to have led the Dragons to their first, undefeated, state class B championship in the history of Brunswick High. For our money, B.H.S. had one of the finest quarterbacks in the state in Carl Merrill. He not only led the team with his own running, but his passing proved to be the key point of the offense. Al Cloutier was a standout at end. The Merrill to Cloutier combinadon proved hard to stop. With the addition of jim Nesbitt and Fred Cole to their backneld, the Dragons iielded a well- balanced attack. Dave Packard, Teddy Peacock, Bob Tripe, Fred Bean, and Dan Caron added to the running attack with Packard running wild on the first play of the Winslow game. The line this year was made up of some hard veterans. jim Dumais, switching to defensive end, proved effective on defense. Charlie Descheneaux, the captain of this year's team, threw key blocks in countless plays. Tim Bensema and Harold Schock proved to be fine linemen. Ray Rossignol, one of the finest guards any- where, proved his talent to the B.H.S. fans with hard defensive charges. Ray made honorable mention on the All American High School Team. The fine kick- ing of Al Cloutier pulled the Dragons out of many diflicult situations. Acknowledgement and thanks are also in store for all the hard work Dan Kenny and Scott Robinson put in as managers of this champion team. 72 Bottom: S. Robinson, W. Hansen, F. Coles, Felter, D. VARSITY FOOTBALL This year's Varsity football team, despite the rather pessimistic outlook of coaches Pearl, Billings and Cockburn at the beginning of the season, compiled the best record in football history at Brunswick High. The Dragons won all seven of their scheduled games. This impressive record proved more than enough to make them State Class B Champs. The Dragons' backfield proved to be much sharper than expected. The veteran line, good running and passing attacks, and alert quarterbacking, proved to be an unbeatable combination. Although many lettermen have played their last game for B.H.S., the outlook for next season is bright with Pat Labbe, Bob Hoftsez, Dave Ponziani, Ron Bernier, Harry Garrison, Wayne Miller, George Wallace and Charlie Hewitt, all who played an important role in this year's wins, returning. The team's record is 3-9 so far, however, with a few breaks, they could have won their three two-point losses to Portland, Waterville, and Rockland. With a never ending determinadon to win, the Dragons still cannot be counted out with four impor- tant games remaining, they could conceivably squeeze into a tourney berth. Though the players do not lack stamina and aggressiveness, they are some- what short of experience. This year's team is led by an excellent first line comprised of Maurice Cyr, james Dumais, and Robert Tripeg all seniors. Last year Bob Tripe was voted Most Valuable Player, and Maurice Cyr was given the Most Improved Player Award. The second line, made up of Chris Coles, jim Russell and David Hannaford, we are recognized by many as three of the most hustling players on the team. George Wallace, Donald F avereau, Joe Holbrook and Richard Anderson make up the Ice Dragon's defensive unit. The nets are tended by Dan Caron and Gerry Bernier, who show considerable improve- ment with each game. With the problem of ice time and the lack of knowledge of hockey by most players conquered, the B.H.S. hockey team figures to finish the 1962 season with a respectable won-lost record. The Golf team missed win- ning the K.V.C. by only one match. This year,s Golf team will be very strong with all of last year's starters back. Through the fine coaching of Mr. Hart and his patient work with the players, this year's team hopes to go undefeated. The starting four golfers this year will be Cary Wilson, Barry Burns, Dale Moeykens, and Robert Beno who are capable of shooting scores in the seventies. Adding depth to this year's team are Peter Blood, Leo Thiboutot, and Sophomore John Stevens who came along very nicely last spring. Barry Burns, Dale Moeykens and Peter Blood played in the 1961 school boys, tournament. This year's team has aspirations of winning the State Schoolboy Golf Team Championship. 89 TRACK e Mike Skaling Allen McGowan Dick Watt N l Arnold Delaite Phil Marriner William Woods Jon Carr Alden Perry Gary Mather 90 Dave Field Bottom Row: M. Delaite holds the school record in the shot put with a throw of 53'9 and the Iavelin with a distance of 196'7 . Skaling holds the record in the pole vault with a high 12'. Zubko holds the record for the Hop, Step, and Iump at 41'5 . Others who scored heavily were Dick Watt, Alden Perry, Phil Marriner, jon Carr, Allen McGowan, Dave Field, Bill Woods, and Rickie Fisher. The team ended the year with a record of 5-2 and by cap- turing the K.V.C. when Delaite broke the Javelin and shot put record. The team also scored in the State Meet, placing third. In the New England Meet, Skaling placed first in the pole vault at 12' and Delaite placed fifth in the shot put. Next year's team looks very good with the return of Dave Packard, jim Nesbitt, George Wallace, David Wright, Mike Zubko, Bill Brown, Ralph Black, Richard Merriman, Denny Baird, Ray Rossignol, Brian Curtis, Larry Crocker, Pat Labbe, Robert Churchill, and William Oakes. AF F ILIATION COM ITT EE The Brunswick High School Student Afliliation Committee conducts all activi- ties relative to our affiliation with two partner schools in Lubeck, Germany, the Thomas Mann Schule, a girls' school, and the johameum, a boys' school. Under the Afliliation program, students and gifts have been exchanged between Bruns- wick and Lubeck. Two years ago, Brunswick High was host to a boy, Berni Schwen, and last year to a girl, Barbara Bauke. Our guest this year, Heinz Behrmann, is from the Bismark Schule in Elmshorn. This year, for the first time, a student from Brunswick, Dave Millay, is attending school in Lubeck. The Student Aiiiliation Committee is composed of club representatives and all interested students. The Committee conducts annual dances and suppers as major fund raising events. Last year, Brunswick High introduced another annual event to our program, an Exchange Student Day held in March in which the foreign students from surrounding schools are invited to speak in a special assembly and visit classes. The purpose of the program is to promote friendship and understanding of the culture of other nations. If ever I saw combined concerted effort by many, many students, I would be justified to say without reservation that Bruns- wick High School students certainly know how to work toward desirable goals. The net profit of the three day festival was S1,500. Most of the money will go toward 1962 scholarships. A portion of it will be reserved for in-school pupil needs for hardship cases, and a small portion will go toward the capital fund which will help other students in later years. This example of fine work once again indicates clearly that young people can do a difficult job very well.
