On April 'I2th the Freshman class put on the Freshman assembly. The members of the class have worked hard in their studies and have participated in our special programs. The Freshman Class, the largest class in the school, was made up of many hard workers, it was due to the hard work and cooperation of all the mem- bers that our class had such a successful year. Selling refreshments at bas- ketball games, sponsoring a trophy for the best class assembly, conducting yearly freshmen receptions, and supervising elections are some of the many proiects. Student Council members are elected by popular vote. Each class is rep- resented equally onthe council. This year it had forty-tive members. The otticers were as follows: President, Ellen Daggett, Vice President, Dick Garrison, Secre- tary, Deanne Rollins, Co-Secretary, Mary Lovell, Treasurer, Mary Hanks. The council advisor was Mrs. Krauter. New proiects this year included: sponsoring two paid assemblies, pur- chasing refreshments for school clubs, the sale of Brunswick pins and beannies. This year the council ran Chip Black for President of the State Student Council Association at the Bangor convention. We were very proud that Chip won this ottice. The Student Council with the support of the student body continually works for school improvement. v V ' v I eq' First Row: D. Moreau, S. Tougas, R. Snow, Mr. Tucker, Mr. Barlow, E. Projects for this year included: hand-made gifts and toys for the Hyde Home, Town Farm, Togus, and the Brunswick Hospital shoe shines, fudge sales, a visit to Camden's Tri-Hi-Y, a dance, a joint meeting with the Key Club, and the serving of refreshments to basketball players after games. The Tri-Hi-Y can boast of another successful year. lt is hoped that next year's group will do as well. .ir-1 .- ,sfo x l,. The membership of the club is composed of boys from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. The only requirement to belong to the club is a willingness to work and uphold the standards of the club. The club operated under the spon- sorship and assistance of the local Kiwanis Club. Although the club is relatively new to the school, it has performed many invaluable services, consequently becoming one of the most active organiza- tions in school. Among this year's activities are some of the following: caring for school grounds, ushering at games, a Cure Vandalism Campaign, the raising of funds for the Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund, Vocational Guidance Program, and many other helpful services. Working in cooperation with the principal, the club endeavors to fulfill the standards and requirements set for them by Key Club International. At present the roster of this club contains nearly seventy names. The purpose of this club is to make friendships through correspondence with young people in other lands. After the correspondance has been estab- lished, cards, pictures, and small gifts are exchanged. Frequently, lasting friendships are begun in this way. Also, much is learned about the customs, traditions, people, and life in other countries. At present the school is working toward affiliation with a school abroad. This will bring Brunswick High School in close association with the school selected. The big social event of the year is the dance which usually occurs around Thanksgiving time. The club also puts on fund-raising sales and holds parties and picnics at various times during the year. gf! VN l Qlflf ff, First Row: L. Linnell, M. Hanks, R. The Dramatic Club has earned a reputation for both quantity and quality, having a membership of nearly one hundred and fifty and a long record of sen- sitive and excellent productions. The B. H. S. Thespians, who have presented many challenging and difficult plays since 1938, have contributed to the cul- tural enrichment of the lives of our students, the community, and an ever widen- ing circle of friends as our casts have traveled to present their plays in every part of New England. The club is now the proud owner of seven beautiful trophy cups, all won in the State One-Act Play Contest Finals, presented by Bowdoin College, our host. We are sure that in the future years the Dramatic Club will continue this enviable record and continue to hold top place in the state. Our last year's contest play, The Ring of General Macias , added the latest laurels by winning second place in the State Finals and by placing three actors in the New England Cast Qno other school in New England achieved thisl chosen at the New England Drama Festival, at Concord, New Hampshire, in April, 1956. Our three were David Lovell, Roberta Potter, and Clement Rowe from our cast of five. We accredit the success of our club to the able leadership of Mrs. Thalhei- mer, who has been in charge throughout this time, and who has been assisted in the past few years by Mr. French and Mr. Leblanc. 7-K 4 K o?l 1:21 0 Z! 5.1 241315 Second Row: J. The club has three radio shows a week, two of which are broadcasted from WBOA, the college radio station. The other show is on Saturday mornings over WCME, and features the top five tunes around the school, and usually a panel, composed of high school students, would comment on new records. The WBOA shows are broadcast on Monday and Friday afternoons from 2:30-5:30 and feature popular music. Since the station is limited to campus coverage, most students have never heard of these programs. The success of the club this year depended largely upon the club advisor, Mr. Hart, who spent many hours preparing our programs. f 7 First Row: S, Small, M. Simpson, R. Potter, J. Morgan, A. However, good times are shared by all in activities such as the Annual School Science Fair and lectures given by noted authorities in the community. Several Club members entered in the Science Fair with good results. Among the eve- ning lectures, the Club has enjoyed Doctor J. M. Moulton's talk on the sounds made by fish. This was supplemented by actual recordings of the sounds which proved most interesting. Another of the Club's activities is keeping the biology laboratory and classroom clean. One of the aims of the Club is to increase our knowledge of biology which was certainly accomplished in the past year. -1- ,vt -,4- 5. Hl0lBAll During a pre-season scrimmage with Cheverus, Dick Garrison, Brunswick's star back, received an unfortunate leg injury which kept him out of several games. Even in the light of this sudden loss the team wasn't discouraged, and team spirit was very high. Each player worked harder and more seriously to offset this blow. Brunswick had a surprisingly successful season even though they did lose some of the major games. Brunswick opened the season with a smashing 27 to O win over Rockland. Dave Baribeau set the pace with three touchdowns and setting up the fourth. George Allen and John Dudley also contributed timely gains for the Dragons. Jack Frost was the outstanding lineman throwing two timely blocks which en- abled Dave Baribeou to go for his touchdowns. The whole line played well on defense. Against Cony of Augusta, the Dragons iust couldn't seem to get rolling and lost the game 20 to 12. Brunswick bounced back from this defeat by beating Lawrence of Fairfield 26 to 6. Dave Baribeau scored three touchdowns, one of which was an 85-yard run. The line played a very hard and aggressive game. Sanford won a close and hard fought 14 to 13 game over the Dragons. John Dudley had a good afternoon with line plunges and he got Brunswick's touchdown. Sanford later went on to win the State Championship. Brunswick's hard hitting lineman and fast moving backs won an easy 33 to 0 game over Biddeford. Chip Black went 55 yards for one touchdown and Dan Brilliant ran 91 yards for another. SWININII li lll57 Although several individual swimmers had an excellent showing at the closing of the season, the team as a whole performed somewhat under par this year. Bruce Frost, a sophomore, broke the school record for the two hundred freestyle. The previous record, two minutes and sixteen seconds, set by Ronald Snow in 1954 and tied by Eddie Langley in 1955 was broken. Frosts new record time was two minutes and fifteen and seven-tenths seconds. New records were also set in the two hundred yard medley relay and the two hundred yard freestyle relay. The record time for the medley relay, set by Bill Blood, John Hentz, Jack Frost and Dick Snow was two minutes six and three- tenths seconds. The record time of one minute and forty-tive seconds was set in the freestyle relay by Bill Blood, Bruce Frost, Dick Snow and Jack Frost. Brunswick finished its swimming season with two state champions. Stanley Favor, who took the state crown in diving also placed sixth in the New England competition at Yale pool. Dick Snow swept the fifty yard freestyle for the mer- men and went on to place third in the hundred yard freestyle, the diving and both relay races, combined to give Brunswick a third place in the Maine State Finals. Mr. Crimmins, the coach, has been appointed director of next year's New England swimming meet at M. l. T. The team would have fared for better had they had more depth. The cindermen opened their season by losing a close meet 61 to 56 to a fine Waterville team. In this meet fine performances were turned in by Pa Bourque, Frank Goodwin, Dave Baribeau, and a freshman, Ronald Lammarne. ln the next meet the Dragons, paced by Pa Bourque and Gary Kellett, won their only meet of the year by defeating Cony and Lewiston in a triangular meet. The following week the Dragons were defeated by a powerful Bowdoin Freshman team by a 78 to 'l8 score. However, fine performances were turned in by Bourque, Baribeau, and Kellett, The next week the team iourneyed to Lewiston for the annual Andy Valley Meet. lnclement weather caused many bad performances as the team wound up fifth. Brunswick's only first place was turned in by Dave Baribeau who copped the high iump. The following week the cindermen lost two close meets. They were edged by Morse, but took second place in a triangular meet by soundly trouncing Gardiner. On Friday the Dragons were again edged by Morse in a dual meet. Fine performance by Gary Kellett and Pa Bourque were not enough to offset the Morse victories. The next weekend the team travelled to Waterville for the Kennebec Valley Meet. Brunswick copped fourth place in an eight team field. In this meet Dave Baribeau won the high iump, Gary Kellett took the pole vault, and Ron Lam- marre won the iavelin. The following weekend the team iourneyed to Waterville for the State Meet. The competition was very keen as Brunswick could place only two men. Dave Baribeau took second place in Class L high iump, and Gary Kellett took third place in the Class L pole vault. These two were chosen to be on the all-Maine track team which represented Maine in the New England Meet at Bowdoin Col- lege. Brunswick can look forward to a good season next year as there are many lettermen returning and many fine underclassmen coming up.
