M., Boston University Commander, U.S. Naval Reserve Time brings changes in yearbooks as in everything else. The class of 1954 has done an outstanding and original piece of work in producing this thirty-fourth annual issue. This yearbook not only has a new title and new cover design, but con- tains many improvements. The school, and particularly the senior class, is grateful to the few upper classmen who have done all the work in making such a yearbook Dossible. Although, seniors, you may now feel that you have been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders and that you have been overworked, actually you will never have life so easy again. As your responsiibilifliies in life gradually increase, un- doubtedly you will reflect and realize what a comparatively sheltered and non-frus- trated life you once led back in those carefree high school days. This class of 1954 is one of the finest with which I have ever been associated. The good influence that it has exerned this year has done much to improve the morale of our school and make it a better one. I only regret that it will be the last graduating class at Brunswick High School with which I will be working. The world into which you are venturing is perhaps filled with more uncertainty than is usually faced by a graduating class. There is much to be done and many problems to be solved if the world is to live in peace. Let us hope that all of you will bear your full share of the load. I sincerely offer my best wishes and hope each of you has a very successful life. JAMES TORRANCE, B. s. Savage School for Physical Education, East Stroudsburg State Teachers' College, Univer- sity of Maine, Civics, P. O. D. Ieclicafion We, the class of 1954, with pride and honor, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. James Torrance, who 'has shown us all 'how to win the friendship of others through sports- manship, courtesy, and scholarship. His progressive guidance will be a remembered tribute 'to 'all who were associated with him. FRONT Row: Mrs. Rearick. This past year, in order to make the Council a more representative body, an equal number of students was elected from each class. No one class held a majority on the Council. There were twenty-four members on the Council this past year. The officers were as follows: Jane Dudley, President, Richard Munsey, Vice-Presi- dent, Mildred McCarthy, Secretary, Lorraine Sauve, Treasurer, Mr. Torrance, Ad- visor. The major purpose of the Council is to undertake projects which will benefit the school and students. The Council has worked for this purpose by sponsoring such projects as staffing the clinic, planning assemblies, selling refreshments at games, buying magazines for the library, and conducting the student elections. Also, there have been numerous minor projects. The Council has avoided the handling of any disciplinary problems for the past two years. Students feel they are qualified only to make suggestions 4 not hand out punishments. True, the Student Council has little actual authority: yet it is an or- ganization which will continue endeavoring to improve the school. 5 4--N 3 lst Row. loft to right: P. Hall. With our presentation of scenes from Harriet, Qfrom the one-hundredth anniversary presentation in honor of Harriet Beecher Stowe's publication of her famous Uncle Torn's Cabin, written while she lived here in Brunswickj , we again took the hurdles in preliminary competition, made the State Finals, and for the sixth time won the coveted privilege of representing the State of Maine in the New England Drama Festival. This makes us high man on the totem pole by three counts. Bowdoin College has been host to the State One-Act Play Finals for twenty-one years. Our club went to the State Finals, for the first time under Mrs. Thalheirner's direction, in 1938. The resume of the top records of Maine High Schools attending the New England Drama Festival speaks for itself: South Portland--4, Q3 times before 1938, once sincel Madison-3 times Lewiston-3 times Rockland-3 times Mexico-2 times East Millinocket-2 times Brunswick-H6 times 1938- Rich Man, Poor Man -New England Drama Festival, Apponang, Rhode Island. 1940-'lBack to Adam -New England Drama Festival, Greenwich, Conn. 1942- The Doctor in Spite of Himself -Worcester, Mass. fWar years-no festival heldj 1947- Still Stands the Housen-Middletown, Conn. 1952- Harrietl'-Woodbury, Conn. The New England Drama Festival will be held in Maine this year, with 'San- ford High School the host school. Herels hoping Brunswick is there! The Dramatic Club is one of the largest clubs in BHS. Therels room for every- one who wants to work for 'better theater. We earn our way, in a most expensive field, turn any profits 'back into service for the entire school by purchasing permanent equipment for the auditorium. VVe are all proud of our Dramatic Club and know it will continue to be an out- standing organization under the guidance of Mrs. Thalheimer. 0l'll0I' H665 Comeha. It was felt that too much emphasis was given to athletics and debating societies and not enough to the studious students. Before the founding of the National Honor Society, some way to better stimu- late and promote higher ideals of citizenship was being sought by leading educators. After much analization the needs of training for good citizenship the National Honor Society was established. The Hawthorne Chapter of Brunswick High School became a member of the Society in 1935. Members to the Hawthorne Chapter are selected primarily on the basis of scholarship. Twenty percent of the top Junior and Senior class are elected - five percent Juniors and fifteen percent Seniors. Two hundred and ninety two mem- bers have been elected since the Hawthorne Chapter was formed in 1935. Last year the Hawthorne Chapter lost someone who, for three years, was its most devoted and respected advisor. Mrs. Bibber gave time and energy to those who need help and guidance and to the training of good citizens. An induction ceremony is planned this year for the new members. It is hoped that this ceremony will become a yearly occasion. .xdfidfiw COACHES ' i of A 1 or 1' f. --vi ' ' . 1, - ,Q a . j- K , H 'J' . 4 f if A 1 '15 A if - Q! 1' ls H . . The managers were 'Maurice Boucher and David 'L'achance. The Dragons opened their 1953 football season with a loss to Skowhegan. A pass from LaCourse to Munsey late in the game was the only score of the day for Brunswick. The final score was Skowhegan 12 and 'Brunswick 7. After gaining a little experience, the Dragons had their first home night game against Biddeford's Tigers. The Dragons won this game by a score of 13 to 7. Dick Munsey scored the first T.D. and 'then Johnny LaCourse scored the winning touch- down. The Dragons began to function more smoothly now and went on to take the measure of Old Orchard by a score of 13 to 0. Dick Munsey and Dave Smith were the scorers in this game. In the next game Brunswick ran into a little difiiculty with a strong St. Doms team. Brunswick 'lost this game by a 33 to 6 score. John LaCourse scored the only T.D. on a pass from Dick Munsey in the -second period. This was 'Brunswick's second loss of 'the season. Brunswick's third loss was to Madison. The score was 16 to 6. John LaCourse ran the ball to the Madison one and then Pappy Labbe scored on an end run. The upset of the year occurred when Brunswick beat Westbrook 12 to 7. Against a bard and experienced line, Brunswick's first T.D. came when John La- Course broke loose on an end run behind good blocking. The second 6 pointer came at the end of the game with three seconds remaining. A pass from LaCourse to Welner was blocked but Welner caught the ball before it hit the ground. Team- work was the 'deciding factor in this game. Brunswick blanked Rockland 13 to 0 in a game at Rockland. Dick Lord pushed over from the seven yard stripe and a pass from Munsey to Eddie Young lmade the score 7 to 0. Munsey then ran 25 yards behind good blocking for the second score of the game. The try for the extra point failed. The Dragons got back in the win column again by 'a 26 to 9 victory over Kennebunk. Dick Munsey ran 60 yards to Kennebunk's 3 yard 'line and Phil Coffin ran for the score. LaCourse scored the extra point. Phil Coflin scored again from the 5 yard stripe and a pass from Coflin to Eddie Young was good for the third touchdown. LaCourse made the conversion good. Coflin pitched to LaCourse for the las-t score of the game. In the last game of the year Brunswick lost to its arch enemy, Morse. The score was 26 to 20. LaCourse scored the first T.D. from one yard out and passed to Eddie Young for the point after. A 15 yard penalty and Smith's 14 yard run made the Score 26 to 13 in favor of Morse. LaCourse scored again in the last 'two minutes of play and the point after was good to make the score 26 to 20. The line was very strong due to 'hard work by the letterrnen and a few new- cofmers. John Caldwell, John Williams, Gary 'I-Ialey, Bob Brillant, Fred Caron, Robert Alexander, Louis Ouelette, Ed Young, Charles Welner, and Maurice Bou- chard were -a few of the hard-working linemen. soo A if 1... Literally speaking, the team ended with a 16-3 record against schoolboy competition. Due to a late mix-up over the eligibility of a player, however, eight games were forfeited bringing our record down to 10-9. Excluding this fact, Bruns- wick had the longest win streak in the history of the school. After losing the first two games, the team started on the climb of a twelve-game streak. This was broken by Winslow whom we had squeaked 'by in the First game against them. The team went on to win the last six games despite the loss of Ronnie LeClair, who passed the age limit in February. The Pearlmen's record landed them a berth in the state tourney where they were paired against Stephens High of Rumford. Brunswick lost 62-43 after overwhelming the Rumford team twice during the season. Next year's team will 'be without the tactics of seniors Ed Young, Scott MacLean and Verge Forbes. However, there are many underclassmen left to build up a fine squad. Players like Jack Morrison. Pappy Labbee, Phil Coffin, Joe Fournier, Maurice Michaud, David Larrabee. jack Priestly, and Louis Ouelette have seen some action this year and will see much more next season. During the season Brunswick scored 1226 points while limiting opponents to 1074. This means that 55.7 points were averaged each game. Most of these points were made by ace Eddie Young with Ronnie LeClair coming in second. In handing out the congratulations to the team, we cannot forget Mr. Pearl. In the two years he has been at Brunswick, he has given us something well worth remembering in later days. ara, 1 zz: K1 K Rlllfwlf 4RUN5w 2k sauugwm. 'T First Row, Left to Right: R. Tetrault, J. Bosse. wimming Under the guidance of Mr. Crimmins, the 'team made a good showing in its opening meet against the Bowdoin -I.V.'s, who were victorious by a 41-34 count. The following evening the custom of a team party was revived. After a two week lay-off over Christmas vacation, a frantic week was spent in preparation for the Deering meet. The work plus smart placing of his men by Coach Crimmins brought about an upset in favor of Brunswick as it downed the Rams 40 to 35. Those who took first places were Ed Langley in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, Philip Bosse in the diving, and Co-captain Jonathan Helmreich in the backstroke. The following week the aqua-Dragons came from behind in the -last relay to defeat Edward Little by a score of 39 to 36. In doing so the 200 yard relay of Reil, Atwood, Holbrook, and Langley set a new Brunswick High record for that event. Co-captain Ronnie Snow took the individual medley and the breaststroke, while Joe Stetson copped a first in the diving. Following mid-year exams the team journeyed to Waterville High, bringing home 'the bacon by a 43 to 23 count. The next week it met Portland High's de- fending state champions and came out on the short end of a 49-26 score. Bruns- wick's one .bright spot was a double win in the individual medley and the breast stroke by Ronald Snow. On February 12th the team traveled to Hebron. There a combination of bad luck and a strange pool helped to down the mermen by a 41 to 34 score. First place winners were Langley in the 50, Stetson in the diving, and the freestyle relay. The most exciting dual meet of the year was dehnitely the second contest with the Bowdoin J.V.'s. Amid much excitement Bowdoin nabbed the relay by four feet, thus winning by a 43-32 score. The State Meet was held at Bowdoin the last Friday in March. Portland again won the title and Brunswick was nipped in the last relay to take third placeby one point behind Deering. The next weekend nine members of the team traveled with Coach Crimmins to Cambridge, Ma-ss., to participate in the New England Swimming Meet at M. I. T. Ronald Snow became the second Brunswick swimmer 'to place there as he took a sixth in the finals, setting a new Brunswick High record for the 150 yard individual medley. Walt Reil, Dick Snow, Ron Snow, and Ed Langley broke the record that was set earlier in the season. Following the last practice session of the year, as is the custom, an election of captain and manager was held. William Daggett was elected manager and Edward Langley was chosen to lead the team next year as captain. The junior high squad compiled ia 3-3 record against competition supplied by 'Greater 'Portland League teams, and placed 4th in the Junior High State Meet. Bazfegaf The 1953 baseball season began, as usual, with many tryouts. Most of the boys seemed willing to get out and work, though gradually a few started dropping out. The 50 or 60 boys that first started the season diminished to a mere 30. Each day the gruellin-g practice began 'at 2:45 and ended around 5:00. Steady pitching and pepper games usually of 4 to 5 fellows were part of the day's schedule. Infield prac- tice was worked on as the most important drill. Some of the pitchers were veterans Dick Yanok, John LaCourse, Charles Wel- ner, George Thibeault and two new comers Don Rogers and Ronnie Holbrook. The infield was made up by John LaCourse, Jack Priestly, Don Harrington, Frank Bichrest and Bump Pierce. Walker and Manson defended the right and center fields leaving the left field to whomever Coach Dallaire wished to put in as the best defense. Morse High's victory of 18-2 over Brunswick was the biggest defeat of 'the sea- son. Both teams 'tried their best and as the Brunswick pitching began to fail Morse 'leaped ahead and went on to win. Brunswick was unable to make any counter- attack against the hard fighting Morse team. The season was very unsuccessful but the boys leamed a lot and they look promising for 1954. QW .lnnifi Brunswick's 1953 tennis team had a successful year despite the fact that it was forced to play all its matches away and lost many practice sessions due to bad weather. The racket-wielders compiled a record of four wins and three losses. The team twice defeated Kents Hill and Portland. They then lost heartbreakers to St. Domfs and to the Hebron J.V.'s. In the state tournament Brunswick played well, finishing in a second place tie with St. Dom's, two points behind Deering High. Captain S'Skip Kelley reached the semi-finals of the singles matches and then joined with Phil Forbes to take second place in the doubles contests. Members of the team were Captain g'Skip', Kelley, jonathan Helmreich, Phil Forbes, Clem Wilson, Dick Pomeroy, Wes Libby, AI Eliot, and Bill Daggett. Q? Lvft to Right: M. Kouthivr. b. Uwen. F. Luc.
