Bente's One Hour Dry Cleaning, New Phila., Ohio '27 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Little did the world lof M.H.S.l realize, but in the fall of 1953 a great history was unveiling in their very midst. For that ye-xr brought a group of fifty-four Freshmen to Midvale High, destined to become The Class of 1957 . As freshmen their history was much like other years, serving as a foundation for future greatness, The class officers elected that year were: President, Lonnie Wolfe, Vice President, Chuck Colletti, Treasurer, Dick Leggeti, Secretary, Shirley Tidrick, Class Representative, Larry Gibbs. h They selected their motto, Enter to learn, go forth to serve , class colors, red and gray, and the red carnation as t eir f ower. Thu boys of the class were first to gain school wide recognition as they turned out in large numbers for sports, several receiving first-year letters. ' Ja1ice Daley was elected cheer-leader and Martha Fox reigned as Freshman attendant at the football homecoming. With the help of Mr. Lindsay, class advisor, they entertained the Juniors at the annual Freshman-Junior party,making it a huge success. Tl'e year passed quickly and they soon found themselves in a new year with a new name, 1955 Sophomores . With this new name came more prestige and pride but, also a feeling of regret as Mrs. Stevenson, our new advisor, callel the roll and only forty-three remained. Class officers elected were: President, Duane Zack, Vice President, Lonnie Wolfe, Secretary, Sue Beahm, Treasurer, Arlene Zontini, Class Representative, Dick Leggett. l-'istory was in the making as everyone, ioined in the whirl of activities. The first big event of the season was the footl all Homecoming. Shelby Parsons, a newcomer, was elected to be their attendant. The Sophomore-Senior party, the induction of Lonhie Wolfe, Duane Zack, and Judy Visintainer, into the National Honor Society, the choosing of Mary Colletti and Arlene Zontini as cheerleaders highlighted the remainder of this year. Yoon they found themselves with another name. As Freshmen they had looked forward to this name, and now it was theirs, Juniors of 1956 . , l'he class officers were: President, Dick Leggett, Vice President, Lan'y Gibbs, Secretary, Mary Trachsel, Treasurer, Judf Visintainer, Class Representative, Harry Dotts. l'hey sold everything, from candy to magazines, outselling the Seniors in the latter campaign. Other events of all kinlls, size and importance helped to make this year one they will always remember. Judy Visintainer was selected to represent her class at the' football Homecoming game with Tusky that year, they purchased their beautiful class rings, and the class play Yop Can't Kiss Caroline was the biggest thing to hit the N'idvale Stage for many a year. . After two years of entertaining it was their turn to be entertained. The Freshmen were hosts at a fun filled party. Soon it was time for The Prom , they were determined to make it a night the Seniors of 56 would long remember. With the help of Mrs. Stevenson the Juniors became artists, paper hangers, and all-round decoraters, transforming the gyfn into a gorgeous Candyland .Music was by Paul Weigand's Orchestra. Monday after The Prom was May Day and the Juniors were again in the highlights, as the student body chose Ju. dy Visintainerand Larry Gibbs to reign as May King and Queen. After a fun-packed day all was climaxed by the or nual May Dance sponsored by the Junior Class. Using The Prom setting as scenery the queen was crowned, and the largest crowd in years had a wonderful ti ne dancing to the music of Blaine Shiveley's Orchestra. At the Athletic Banquet, in the spring of 1956, we were proud and honored when our boys, Dick Leggett and Gary l' aney received outstanding honors, Dick being a member of the All-County Basketball team, Gary taking the Midvale lions Club's new trophy, Outstanding Football Player of 1956 . Again it was time for all good things to end , but they found with this ending a greater beginning. The beginning bf which fl eY hfld W0flfeCl, strived, and tried to become worthy, the name, Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty- Seven fieniors, was finally ours. The 1957 Seniors started the year out with a bana bv electina class officers: President, Larry Gibbs, Vice President, onfja Wolfe, Secretary, Judy Visintainer, Treasurer, Shirley Tidrick, Class Reprggentqtiyel Lorgn Bgqng, - UUI' boys, Waiting for this year since Freshmen, helped the football team bring the best record in years. With itthey arought the T.V.C. Championship. Five of the All Conference Team were Midvale Seniors. They are, John Beans, Gary Hone , Hurry Dotts, Chuck Colletti, and Dick Leggett. Vzth such a good season, the queen of the season, had to be really special. For this specialty they knocked at the Senior door and chose our own Sweet Sue lBeahm1 to reign and to be crowned at the Strasburg Game.The honor Senior Attendant was Jud Visintainer. Now as we work on this year's Midhian, and look forward to our class play, Senior Prom, and May 21, 1957 when we become alumni, we know Life is what you make it . We Seniors, hope we have made our life at Midvale High all that we could. We know, too, that the heritage and wonderfulmemories Midvale High has given us, will always be cherished Gnd loved in our hearts. Our first encounter was with Augusta and we beat them 73 -34. Leggett led the scoring with 25 points, Colombo added 14. ln our next ame we lost a heartbreaker at Baltic, 74-73. DeMattio led Midvale with 20 points. Leggett was next with 17 For our thirg game we defeated Tusky 78-46. Leggett and Colombo tallied 16 apiece. We then traveled to Strasburg to come home on the short end of a 62-55 score. Colombo was high with 16. ln our next game we defeated Dundee 74-52. Colombo led the way with 12 points, Krocker followed with 10. We now faced the lndians of Gnaden and were beaten 66-64. DeMattia netted 16, Colombo 14. Tuscarawas Valley was next and we lost a dis uted decision 74- 73. Colombo had 25 points, Leg tt 18. We then traveled to Part Washington only to be turned back 72- 71. Leggett potted 26, Wolfe aided 14. Next was Stonecreek who defeated us 69-58. Colombo was high with 2 , Leggett and Wolfe added 10. We thought it was time for a win and so we defeated West Lafayette 90-61. Colombo blazed the nets with 42 points, Leggett added 18. Tusky invaded us next and we dumped them 89-33. Leggett was high with 20, Belknap added 16. Krocker and Colombo contributed 15 apiece. We next beat Newcomerstown 69-45 in a benefit game for polio. Colombo hit for 20, Russ Hobart added 14. Conotton Valley came to Midvale looking for a victory, but were turned back 83-65. Colombo potted 27, Leggett followed with 26. Conotton Valley invaded next and we defeated them 83-65. Colombo hit for 27 points while Leggett netted 26. We then traveled to Gnaden, and in a thrilling qame all the way, we were defeated 87-81. Leggett blazed the nets for 34 points, Colombo and Krocker had 20 and 17 respectively. Then the Strasburg tigers came to town and went home victorious as they defeated us 67-64. Leggett and Colombo hit for 17 apiece, Wolfe added 14 points. fContinued on page 7U 56 FOOTBALL SEASON Well, here it is again, football. With 13 returning lettermen, we started out with 40 players. When the preview rolled around we were down to 33 players. Midvale had drawn Newcomerstown and were eagerly waiting the opening kick-off. It came on September 7 and we managed to come out with a 6-2 victory. Fulp scored the lone touchdown on a 15yard run. Our next encounter was at Brewster. We came home on the short end of a 33-14 score. Leggett scored on a 6 yard sneak and passed to Colletti for Swards and a touchdown. Benedum booted both extra points. ln our next game we trounced est Lafayette 32-0. Colletti led the attack with 3 touchdowns. Leggett scored on a 14 yard run, and Benedum scared from 5 yards out. Benedum also booted the extra points. ' ln our next game with Dennison, overconfidence played a big part in our 25-0 loss, our worst game of the season. Against Strasburg, we splashed out a 19-6 win. Leggett passed 41 yards to Wolfe for first touchdown, and plunged 1yard for another. Colletti went 7 yards for final score, and plunged for point after. ln our sixth game we nipped Tusky 13-7. Colletti score both touchdowns on runs of 82 and 61 yards, and ran the extra point. I We then traveled to Malvern and were victorious b the pleasing score of 40-2. Leggett had 3 touchdowns, one on an intercepted pass for 55 yards, 22 and 42 ard runs. Fufp scored on runs of 70 and 20 yards. Tollotti scored on a5 yard plunge The seniors playing their last High School Football game led the Devils to a 39-0 rout over Marlboro. Colletti plunged 5 yards, and ran 40 yards for touchdowns. Leggett ran 30 yards and plunged 1 yard for scores. Benedum scored on a 7 yard run, and Leggett completed a pass to Wolfe, covering 76 yards to end the scoring. TRAC K Midvale had a very successful track season, winning both the County and District Meets. In the County we amassed a total of 67 V3 points. Leggett led with I6 V4 points, scoring Firsts in the high and low hurdles, high iump, and was amember of the winning 880 yard relay team. Swinderman was close behind with I4 IX4 points with first place in the 220 yard dash, second place in the I00 yard dash and broad iump, and was anchor man on the 880 yard relay team. In the District we collected a total of 65 points . Swinderman took scoring honors with I6 IX4 points, scoring first in the 220 yard dash, and broad jump, third in the I00 yard dash, and also was a member of the 880 yard relay team which took first place. Strasburg was our next game and we tumed them back in a thrilling game 62-54. Leggett had 26, Colombo 18. We next encountered the Troians of Tusky Valley and thumped them 96-58. Colombo potted 30, Wolfe and Leggett had 19 and 18 respectively. In the first ame of the Sectional we met Kilbuck and defeated them 91- 52. Leggett netted 27, Colombo 18, and Wolfe adged 17. ' Next came Stonecreek. Seeking revenge we won a hard fought game 76-71. Colombo, for the second time this year potted 42 points, Beans added 13. Vxalnutcreek was next and we defeated them 77-58 for Sectional champs. Colombo netted 21, Wolfe followed wit 18. ln our first game of District, we met and defeated Adena by a score of 94-'68. Colombo had 32, Wolfe added 21. Against Gnaden for the District Cham ionshi we came through with a 73-59 victory. Leggett potted 30 points. Colombo scored 24, Leggett 15. ' We now had achieved what some 614 Class A schools had been hoping to. We were going to play in the State finals at Columbus . We drew Ayersville, now state champs. As you all know we were defeated 71-57, hi 26 per cent of our shots. That concluded our basketball season with a 21 and 10 record.
