Russell Vincent Rulers and Pages Substitutes Leave Home To Face A Day Of Teaching News traveled fast when there was a substitute teacher. Half of the class would be planning a big joke to play on her, the remain¬ ing half pondered how they should treat her. While substituting for one of Mrs. Gordon’s classes an incident happened that you wouldn’t believe. One of the students took a cigarette lighter and an aerosol can of chalkboard cleaner and created a torch. Fortunately, this happened only once. It seemed that the hardest thing for a substitute to handle was when the students thought they were going to have a break from work because the regular teacher was absent. A substitute knew that it would be hard to handle the troublemakers when she was teaching for just one day, but when she was in the classroom for a couple of days, she prepared for the “smartalecks” and cracked down.
