H. S, As students begin their classes once again, they meet new members of the faculty. At this time of the year class officers and J. V. Cheerleaders are chosen and the pupils get down to class work again. Mr. Grizzard, one of our new teachers Electronics Class Bulldogs Win Old Oaken Bucket Students Build Floats For Homecoming And Elect Bekah Queen Anxious Juniors and Seniors contemplate future plans as they listen to representatives from colleges, nursing schools, armed forces, business schools, and other groups. Records were broken as Seniors presented the comedy Rest Assured to fatten the class treasury. Football season comes to a close with a spectacular last minute two touchdown win over Park View and 13-12 loss to Randolph Henry. Football season ending, girls look forward to their participation in sports- -basketball. December ushered in Christmas thoughts and the Hi-Y emphasized the im- portance of thinking of others before our- selves. Sponsored by the Hi-Y, the pupils brought food and clothing to give to sixty needy people in the community. The Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y clubs led the assembly program accompanied by the band who played carols. Basketball a c t i o n saw victories for boys ' and girls ' teams before we went home for a long awaited holiday. DEC 5 ”1 wish I had started studying before now” becomes the familiar refrain as examinations cause frantic last minute cramming. The most beautiful sight in January is snow and ice which give extra vacation days to pupils who eagerly tune in local radio and T. V. to hear the news NO SCHOOL TODAY! Cupid dances around in the month of February as the Beta Club sponsors the Valentine Queen of Hearts contest and dance. New romances spring up each year about this time. Toward the end of the month comes Tournament Time as our boys enter the Group II District III contests at Hampden Sydney. Not only is this a big thrill for players but cheerleaders and students share the excite- ment and tension. Watch Out! Spring fever hits hard about this time of year. How can anyone concentrate on books at a time like this ? The election of Miss Brunswick High School is a highlight each March. At the annual spring concert our band proudly displays their talents, proving that those long practice sessions were not wasted. Forensic honors come to B.H.S. as Bobby Hawthorne wins first place in the District and goes on to the state contest. Latin students have their day as they parade styles of the Romans to show that Latin is not dead. They finish the day with a banquet featuring foods that were eaten by the Romans. 9 APRIL Southern belles and gallant beaus danced to the music of the Royal Serenaders as the Junior-Senior prom featured the theme Gone With the Wind . The month of April brought scores of picnics and outings as once again we got out of doors. Outdoor sports brought fame to our boys on the track and baseball fields. A JUNE At class day the seniors re viewed the events of their school careers. Graduation is the golden reward that awaits seniors after twelve years of study, play, ef- fort and work. Highest ranking seniors give speeches, honor students may wear gold cords, all who pass receive the long awaited diploma. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Mr. J. T. Pearson, Mr. James E. Matthews, Jr., Mr. W. B. LATINS PARADE ROMAN STYLES Sodalitas Latinae has a two fold purpose, to be of service to the school and to gain more understanding and appreciation of the ancient Greek and Roman civilization. The club sponsored a Latin Day celebration at which time new members dressed in Roman styles were initiated. Members participated in a chapel program and staged a cake walk to raise funds for the annual Roman banquet held in the spring. The club motto is Res non verba (deeds not words). Gifts to the scnool include books for reference, pictures, charts and materials for background of Latin study, trees and shrubbery for beautification of the school grounds, and donations to the physical edu- cation department and athletic association. This year the club entered a float featuring a Roman chariot in the homecoming parade for which it won second prize. - Young Patricians Study Seal Fighting For A Grade 1ST ROW- -Linda Ozmar, Linda Moore, Kay Pearson, Glenda Jennings, Sharon Rennolds, Gale Fleshood, Faye Jackson, Sandra Perkins, Janice Malone, Betty Browder, Ann Lynch, Mabel Clary, Mrs. Elmore, Sponsor, Phyllis Pierce. 2ND ROW- Lester Stephen- son, Francis Chambliss, John Hawthorne, Carolyn Davis, Wilma Paschall, Barbara Freeman, Reda Jane Nelson, Caren Clar y, Elaine Elmore. SURPRISING BULLDOGS CAPTURE RUNNER-UP SPOT Due to the loss of 10 graduating Seniors the inexperienced Bulldogs had a major rebuilding job to do. On August 22, thirty boys reported to practice and elected Harold Neal, Donald Clary, and Freddie Reekes co- captains. Line coach, Harold Grizzard, joined head coach, B. I. Pinchbeck, and assistant coach, Marshall Hughes. The Bulldogs opened the season with Victoria and prevailed over the Panthers by a slim 6-0 margin, in spite of first game jitters and in- experienced teammates. In the second game of the season, the Bull- dogs faced Crewe, who later became District Champions. Here Brunswick showed their real power, easily dominated play, and romped to an impressive 31-6 victory. Cumberland found itself completely out- manned as the Bulldogs crushed the Dukes 38-0 for the Bulldogs third win. The fourth game found two undefeated teams, Bulestone and Brunswick, meeting head on. The outcome of the game proved the Bulldogs were certainly a threat to the district crown as they won 26-7. The following week found the Bulldogs fac- ing their arch- rivals, the Emporia Eagles. Added interest was contributed to the game by the challenge of the Oaken Bucket which would be awarded to the winning team. The Bulldog ' s defense proved immovable as the offense shut out the Eagles 22-0. In the sixth game with Prince Edward Aca- demy, the Bulldogs could never get an offense started and went down to their first defeat 12-7. Next came the Ho m e c o m i n g game with Amelia and Bulldog hopes were high; the first half was dominated by the Bulldogs 13-6, but the second half turned the tables and Amelia broke away for a 32-19 victory. Revenge came in the Blackstone game for a 13-0 victory. The game was highlighted by the defensive work of All- District Tackle Harold Neal and the offensive plunges of All- District Fullback Leon Greene. The next game against Park View was one of the most exciting in the football history of Brunswick High. The Bulldogs behind by a 12-6 margin marched for two touchdowns in a minute and 31 seconds. The final score came with only 2 seconds left on the clock by a long pass from Freddie Reekes to Jimmy Clary who made the catch in the end zone after a defender had hit the ball. The final game of the year was a heart- breaking 13-12 loss to Randolph- Henry. This loss cost the Bulldogs the Championship as they were edged out by the Crewe team whose only defeat had been at the hands of Brunswick. Thus, by one point, they lost the chance of winning the first District Football Title for B. H. S. The Bulldogs climaxed a successful season with a 7-2 district record. Sheer determination and teamwork carried them to a winning season as there were no super stars or individual heroes. Left to Right: 1ST ROW-W. J. After traveling all the way to Buckingham, the girls s uff e r e d their first loss. With undaunted spirits the team, brought home three more victories. (Park View, Victoria, and Amelia) After the break for exams, we looked forward to more victories, but the teams from Greensville, Kenbridge, and Randolph- Henry somehow scored more points, resulting in three more losses for Cowan’s Cuties. Brunswick’s only loss came at the hands of then unbeaten Park View when the Bulldogs fell 81-51 after seven consecutive victories.
