It ' s a teen ' s world - to enjoy and to span! No longer are we limited to home towns and back yards. With the modern methods of communication now available beyond our door is the universe, and just around the corner is outer space. We are involved with the world whether we like it or not. We are its citizens, its makers, and its future rulers. Unlesswe ' re in touch with all corners of the globe, all areas of life, we ' re a square.” Never have teens had life so good, so special. Yet with the luxury of our economy we can become soft and lazy, or we can let it open doors of self -development for us. We can prepare ourselves intellectually, emotionally and professionally with relatively little dis- traction. Ours is the power to make dreams come true - to have the friends we want - the harmony at home - the travel away from home - the high grades - and high goals we want. At our fingertips are the works of masters to enjoy, to learn from and to profit by. At the snap of our fingers we can become lost in a world of Mozart or Benny Goodman, enchanted by Burns or Longfellow, cry with Shakespear or laugh with Mark Twain. We can walk the golden Roman Streets with Caesar or rule the English with Elizabeth. Or if we chose we can ride with an astronaut as he explores outer space, sit in on U. N. conferences or even twist with Chubby Checker ! Yes, the world is ours; all we have to do is make it worthwhile. It is important to show everyone ' s individual picture , classroom and extra curricular scenes but more important it gives each of us a pictorial record of cherished memories that we can turn back to down through the years. Time has passed so rapidly and now that we are seniors we look back on many memories that are a part of our history. The following pages seek to recall with pictures not only our fun at extra curriciilar activities but of more lasting importance our class room activities that have enabled us to reach the coveted goal of high school graduation. We realize that this is only one small step to an education, yet at this stage in our lives it has meant so much to us that we seek to share with you, our reader, the cheerful, changing, challenging days at B, H. S. In our modern world ability to communicate is of primary importance. Not only the abilities to read with speed and comprehension but also with a degree of appreciation. Communication also incorporates the more difficult skills of written composition and public speaking if we are to be successful in a space e. The a- bility to think objectively and not be influenced by prejudice, superstition, and propaganda are basic to real learning. Much more technical information must be mastered by a person in a space age. Understanding of numbers and science are a part of the universal language of an educated person. For many of us high school terminates our formal education so vocational training is of primary importance. Our high school offers us skills that will help enable us to earn a gainful living, Basic concepts of right and wrong learned in the classroom and on the athletic field as well as at school social activities help a pupil formulate the sound moral and spiritual values necessary to good citizenship. Unless our schools develop within us knowledge and belief in American Democracy our very existance will be endangered. Finally through creative imagination and thinking we encourage within ourselves intellectual curiosity and in- dividual responsibility necessary to successful and happy life. a|npp!i 1 i Tv i mmlm J Mr. Witten gives guidance information to Betty Smithson, Carolyn Adcock, and Manning Rodgers. The band was pleased to be selected to represent Brunswick County in this event and even the undesirable January weather did not hinder the enthusiasm of the band members. Other activities of the year included performance and half time shows at all home football games and two games away at Emporia and Amelia. The South Hill Harvest Parade, our Home- coming Parade, the University of Virginia Band Day, and the community Christmas program in downtown Lawrenceville were other outdoor activities during the fall and early winter. Last year the band was honored by having two of its members chosen for All-State Band and two for Work Shop Band. The Concert Band has been steadily improving and with an increased membership looks forward to a successful concert season and the District Three band festival in the spring. The band has had many good times this year, but above all endeavors to learn about the many kinds of music by developing skills and understanding in playing an instrument. Not another injury ! was the plaintive cry of the Bulldog fans as high hopes of being District Champs were slaughtered when ten key players on the Bulldog team re- ceived injuries during Group II, District III play this year. Chosen preseasonal favorites to win the District trophy, Coach Pinchbeck and his boys upheld the prediction with a six-game winning streak at the beginping of the season. However, the next four games were with the strong teams from Amelia, Blackstone, Park View, and Randolph -Henry. Due to injuries, the Bulldogs suffered two losses and a tie but managed to win the last game against Randolph -Henry, while the Blackstone Rams went ahead to claim the championship with a record of 1 wins, no losses, and one tie. Lewis, Waller, and Watkins return to make up the defense of the team after lettering in Group n. District m play last year. Although these girls aren ' t very tall, they move with agility and determination that should compensate for the loss of height. The offense of the team has not been hurt too much in height, but lacks experience as only Nicholson is the forward on the team this year who lettered last year.
