Annual Staff Lower School Editor, Sadie Hawthorne Upper School Editor, David Hawkins. Vhat motivates an annual staff? No one can really know until he becomes a staff mem¬ ber. Basically what is required is patience, determination, sacrifice, and accepting re¬ sponsibility. Rewards for serving on the staff are few, but the desire to contribute something lasting to our school along with a feeling of personal achievement is what keeps us going. His capacity for com- municating with the students is unlimited. We are very proud to have him as an inte¬ gral part of our institution. In carrying out his duties, he relies heavily on Mrs. Mattie Killam who serves as his receptionist, book¬ keeper, typist and general secretary. We feel that the Junior S.C.O. has been a great success. The many activities they have sponsored have not only aided the school but aided the students as well. By taking part in this type of school activity, it has helped to give them some idea of leadership and responsibility. We hope this experience will aid them in their future high school education. The Junior S.C.O. offered assistance to the new students on the first day. SEATED: Ann Outten, Betty Nash, treasurer; Terri Slaw, president; Patricia Norwood, secretary; Marshall Harris. At B.A, this year change has been the dominating theme within our institution. Changes have been evident throughout many of the school ' s departments: a new gym, lights for the football field, the loss of Mr, Preston Doyle, the appointment of Mr, Meade R, Atkinson as headmaster, new classrooms, new teachers, and new classmates. In editing the 1971 VIKING, we hope that we have adequately portrayed these changes. Compiling this volume was a monumental task which would have been impossible without the dedication of the staff and sponsors. We, as co-editors, extend special thanks to Mrs, Raiford, Mr, Blick, and Mr, Creasy who have helped tremendously with their patience, understanding, and knowledge. Many pages would not have been completed without the photography of Miss Edris Rennolds and Ritt Butler, Mrs, T, E, Blick’s gener¬ osity in lending us the use of her home for work on the annual was very much appreciated, also. For their financial backing, we thank all those who purchased advertisements, without which this book could never have been printed. To those unfamiliar with the task of compiling an annual, the hard work, the headaches, the sacrifices and the long hours are inconceivable. At times the rewards seem few, but to hear a co-worker or reader exclaim, that’s really going to look neat, or that’s a cool layout makes the task worthwhile. As this school session of 1970-71 comes to a close, we, the co-editors, hope that this yearbook clearly and accurately depicts progress and the changes made in our institution. We hope that the 1971 VIKING will be a source of pleasure now and in the years to come. )lQAJUb 160 R. J.
