COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Mrs. Raiford explains debits and credits. Dictation can be fun! The Commercial Department offers a variety of courses for vocational students. Two years of Typing allow students to become acquainted with the skills of touch typing and also the procedures for typing letters, invoices, memos, and other forms. For the future secretary, a two year course in Gregg Shorthand is available. Bookkeeping familiarizes the aspiring accountant with the basic procedures in the bookkeeping cycle. Business Math is a course designed to benefit students as consumers or as businessmen. It deals with savings and investments, taxes, home ownership, and other problems connected with business enterprises. Office Practice is offered for the first time this year. This class provides a general background which is essential for all office employees. Office Practice students caught in a typical chore. Sit up straight, eyes on your copy, etc., etc., etc. 23

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT Mr. Conrad checks Jeff Parrott’s work. Mr. Wills prepares for class. Our Social Studies program offers something of interest for every grade level. Eighth graders begin with American History which tells the story of Colonial times as well as our modern space age. World Geography and World History, offered to ninth and tenth graders, deal with the geography, governments, leaders, and beliefs of nations. A required course in American History is provided for Juniors. This is a more detailed study of our country’s past. Seniors concentrate on American Government; a class which combines the study of the formation of our system of government with current developments in politics. As an elective. Sociology benefits many students. A U.S. map in the making. Mr. High reviews for a test. 22

Mr. Clary grins and bears it! Three years of physical education are required for graduation at Brunswick Academy. Eighth graders study a basic health course. The Freshmen and Sophomores may take Driver’s Education. This year, for the first time, we have separate classes for boys’ and girls’ Physical Education. Our students are required to remain in the classroom for a required number of hours of textbook work and spend a certain amount of time on the athletic field. Students enjoy such activities as volleyball, football, basketball, and baseball when the weather permits. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Warren, Joan and Ronnie work hard on Health project.
